I know this has probably come up before but it just interested me. I have played several adventure games that i haven' heard about ever on these forums and i was just wondering if anyone else has played them and wat the think:
1.CSI - Pure genius. Like being in the TV show. U solve 5 cases and have to find a conneciton between them all.
2. Toonstruck - A guy gets sucked into the cartoon world and has to save it
3 RAMA - A game about a big flying space ship. Thats it. it's abit rubbish.
4. The dig - A lucas game which was just great. I wondered if anyone else liked it
From above, I've played only the dig, and I also think that it is great - the best game lucas made.
I've played the last 3 games. Toonstruck was good. RAMA was crappy. The Dig is the most overrated piece of shit ever released, I honestly can't see why anyone can like it. I admit it is pretty, but it's booooring. Everything past the playable introduction sequence is awful.
Yes, the Dig was boring as fuck. Worst lucasarts adventure ever (after EMI)
What was the dig about??? I think I may have had a demo of it, but don't remember what it was.
The plot in the dig was pretty solid, the music and sound were great, and the puzzles were awesome.
No they weren't. There were far too many Myst-style twiddle puzzles.
I'm getting C.S.I...
Did you know there is a second one? C.S.I 2: Dark Motives. I'll get that after the first one
Make sure it's good first. Sequel's suck 4 out of 5 times
The Dig was good because of it's characters and dialouge. The puzzles were pretty awful if you're the sort of person who questions why these aliens would put a puzzle thingie there...
the csi sequel game comes with the first game... right now its about 30 bucks. i just bought the first one for my girl for 30, and then this one comes out and includes the first one. i was pissed.
I had a lot of fun with toonstruck, although i mostly used a walkthrough cause i had to give the game back to my friend the next day. i love christopher lloyd, and i liked the game. some people thought that his sidekick was overly annoying, but i didnt feel that way.
I played Toonstruck, LOVED it, and am mourning the loss of my original CDs. But then, I've always been partial to Christoper Lloyd. Besides great voice acting, the game's wacky/zany atmosphere is UNIQUE - you can't even compare to, say, DOTT, or any other, because it's... well, its own. Good puzzles, no walking deads or deads of any kind, and great characters!
Neber even HEARD of RAMA.
AND I'LL DEFEND THE DIG TO MY DYING DAY!
Honestly, it's got great characters, well developed (they are somewhat stereotypical, granted, but that doesn't mean they can't be well developed, and in the Dig's case, they are wonderfully constructed)... great dialogues, a wonderful storyline... lovely graphics, an incredible soundtrack... and puzzles that fit perfectly in the storyline. Give me ONE gratuitous puzzle.
BTW, a lot of people comment on how boring it was - hey, some people like it like that, so to speak. I, for one, didn't find it boring in the least. So I think we should take EVERYONE's opinions on the game (including mine!) with a pinch of salt, kay?
(does the expression exist? I've heard it on King's Quest 7, but I'm not too sure what it means, I hope I used it correctly... ;D)
QuoteGive me ONE gratuitous puzzle.
The turtle puzzle.
:-[ You're right. It's the one that still makes me swear when I replay the game, too. It's the only one, though.
I enjoyed the Dig. I don't swear by it, but I thought its good points outweighed its bad ones. I felt that the atmosphere was excellent. The combined effect of the art direction and excellent Michael Land score was extremely effective I thought.
From all the games you mention, I've only played the Dig. I'd say that it has the worst gameplay of all Lucasarts' adventures (and by worse, I mean less good), but it has the best friggin' atmosphere ever. The style of this game and the music make it so good, you (or at least I :P) didn't care much about nonsensical puzzles. The story was quite good too.
redruM, I think the expression is "with a grain of salt", not sure though. I think I know what it means too, but I'd rather let a natural speaker of English explain it. :P
(edit) My PC is acting weird, it decided to post my answer while I was still typing, geez.
I haven't played Toonstruck, but I really wanted to buy it when it first came out. My friends got me to buy NBA Live '97 instead, bleh. Rama is not my kinda game, and I heard CSI had some gameplay problems. I love the show though (rhyme :P), and I recently found it for $15. Is it worth it?
i thought the dig was one of the better lucas games.....
i liked it more than sam and max.........still don`t think this is as good as most do.....(don`t get me wrong i did like it...a lot).
The only one of these that I've played is Toonstruck, which annoyed the hell out of me. I don't completely remember why, but unless my memory cheats me there were two main reasons: it seemed shoddily made, and it tried MUCH too hard to be funny. Might just have been due to the excruciatingly terrible German translation and voice acting (the only kind there ever is in translations of anything, for some reason), though.
Ah, yes, beware of translations. Especially in this case. The best thing about it were the voice actors... not to mention Lloyd's performance...
I've played The Dig, I really liked it because it had a strong atmosphere. The puzzles were sometimes a little bizzarre (and I hated the turtle puzzle too), but I thought the puzzles were relevant to the story and never too bizarre. The intro is still one of my favourites of all time, cinematic, intriguing, funny... Bill Tiller out did himself on that one.
The ending was another story, and that's the only crap part of the game, IMO. The alien world kept me spooked throughout, the voice acting was superb - Robert Patrick was a great Lowe, and whoever played Maggie (I think she was in CopLand) was great too. Brink was also well acted. The music, well, Land claims it to be one of his favourite works - and rightly so. It worked really well, and was quite epic.
I've played some of ToonStruck, but only the first quarter. I wasn't really enjoying it, so I sold it.
:D
I just wanted to say something in defense of "The Dig". While not the greatest game ever (IMO), I did enjoy it. As someone already said -- the good points outweighted the bad ones.
And holy crap! Are some people always so bitter on these forums? If you didn't like a game, you can say so but you don't have to swear at it! lol Sheesh! It's not a person... *ahem* ::)
In fact, I think "The Dig" is rather one of the most UNDERrated games rather than overrated. You want overrated? Look at "The Longest Journey" *yawns...*
Ah well... 8)
Well I havn't played any of those games. I have been wanting to play The Dig. It seems like some people like it and some don't, I'll have to make up my mind.
Hmm, toonstruck sounds interesting. I've heard of the name, but I don't know much else about it. I'll have to check that one out.
Also, adding another game to the mix. Have many people played Stupid Invaders. I've got a demo for it, and it seems pretty cool, but I havn't heard the best stuff about it from other people.
I played The Dig and Toonstruck. Toonstruck is a great game -- very original, too. Personally I really liked The Dig, except for the CEL shaded cutscenes. Those were really terrible.
I just got The Dig a little while ago. Haven't really gotten into it yet. I'm hoping it's good.
I have Stupid Invaders. I didn't really like it. It's got some outstanding moments and quite a few below average moments. And one of those damned 'context sensitive' interface things that just turn off actions if you're not meant to do them. Some of the humour is funny as all hell, while other bits are just frigging retarded. Still, it has some cool quotes that I still remember.
"I'm going to kill you. And you will scream while you die. And then, you will be dead."
"Working inside a giant vacuum cleaner must suck."
What about 'Rent a Hero'. Has anyone else played that? It's kind of cool. And yet kind of bad. Hard to classify. But it has some nice moments and animations.
Or how about 'Agipito's Crazy Adventure'? That thing cost me 50c. And it was worth it. No more.

stupid invaders used to be a cartoon on like Fox Kids Network, on saturdays, and then it went off the air, and all of the sudden it had a game. ive thought about getting it, but then i see starcraft being sold with the expansion pack for 10 bucks total, and then i cry and move on.
wow, i go away for two days and 24 people reply. The csi game was wicked man. I had no game play problems. You have to be able to see past the (slightly) poor 360 panorama views that crop up once in a while but other than that it was great!
I enjoyed toonstruck too but it was a bt to over done you know. like "how many jokes can we pack into 4 seconds?"RAma was truly shocking never buy it. I mean shocking. I magine the worst thing ever. Square it. times it by george bush and you got rama.
I loved Dig. Haven't heard of the others tho.
QuoteAND I'LL DEFEND THE DIG TO MY DYING DAY!
And I WILL, too. But, Lo and Behold, Is This a Plothole I See Before Me?
Spoiler
Ok, so you divert Brink's attention to get to his stash and force him to help you help Maggie. But if he's so pissed about it, why doesn't he just go to the "crystal room" and pick up a few more? Or a LOT more?
Because he has already taken them and used most of them - remember, you go in there and that big bowl thing is empty - and Lowe is all like " Stinkin' Junky, he took all my stash! " and then there's like a giant lizard playing electric guitar and . . um . .nevermind.
No, that only happens LATER. I'm talking about when Maggie is in need of rescuing, the stash only gets empty once you've found the missing Eye part and put it in the machine.
Can't say anything about any of the games besides The Dig, which I really enjoyed. It looked good, the story and the atmosphere were all great as well. I've played games that was alot worse, and that I didn't even bother to finish.
I can live with some irritating puzzles and some plot holes if I can finish the game and still feel good about buying and playing it. And that's what I did.
I've Never even heard of any of thoz games :P
They all seem great and fun.
How about some reviews? ::)
Try "Just Adventure +", or "Adventureboomers". Sorry for not giving links, I just don't know them.
I DO know that The Dig has been reviewed in The Inventory's 5th issue. Final score - 91.
The site I work for, Adventure Gamers (http://www.adventuregamers.com/), has reviews of all those games except RAMA.
I'm not familiar with Adventureboomers (unless you're referring to Gameboomers), but I can say without bias that Adventure Gamers definitely has more integrity and is of higher editorial quality than Just Adventure.
