Hourgame Saturday
The purpose of Hourgame Saturday is, to encourage the amateur game-making, or to put it bluntly, to make you tear your ass off your chair and finally make something.
In this activity your task is to make an AGS game within a strict and a very short deadline (i.e. one hour).
Timeline:The event takes place every (surely hope so) Saturday, starting at 7:30 pm GMT, when the theme is revealed on the IRC and in this thread. The participants then have one hour to make their entries and 15 more minutes for uploading. In brief:
the deadline for entries is 8:45 pm.
Then the voting takes place till the Monday Morning.
Basic rules:- Participants can join IRC for rules and updates (how do I join IRC? (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/acirc.htm)), but every information will be posted here too, so it's your choice.
- The theme is set by the previous week's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence.
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their games cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your game from scratch is strongly encouraged, though it is not forbidden to use music or artwork from public sources if you are allowed to (e.g. using public domain music tracks in your game is OK, but not really necessary). It is also possible to use a pre-existent AGS template for your game (e.g. that Verb-Coin GUI template).
- You cannot use the stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.
Uploading:Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:
- http://www.mediafire.com/ (http://www.mediafire.com/)
- http://www.sendspace.com/ (http://www.sendspace.com/)
- http://www.rapidshare.com/ (http://www.rapidshare.com/)
- Or your own place.
Voting:Just tell us your favourite game (and possibly a couple of less favourite ones), and hopefully someone will do the counting.
Important: please post here if you'd like to join but the timeline is not ok for you! Slight changes are always possible!p.s.: I've started a rather naive form of lobbying (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=27157.msg516243#msg516243) in the Comp&Act board.
You, as an hourgamer, may want to support it.
I'm in :) and I also showed interest in the Comp&activities-move of this thread ;D
A question though; My free trial time for mIRC is about to run out :'( seeing that I am entirely broke at the moment and with no income whatsoever, is there any way to keep on going to the IRC-channel for free?
There once was a bug that enabled you to just wait until the "continue" button pops up again, click it, wait again, click it again and you can use mIRC. Also, you should actually be able to download to trial version again...

I use ChatZilla (a FF addon, unsurprisingly enough). Once installed and loaded, just type
/attach irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk and then
/join #AGSin the command line and that should do the trick.
Or, use FSi's method

A little tip: use http://www.mibbit.com (http://www.mibbit.com) to access the famous AGS IRC channel!
1. click "start chatting"
2. click "server"
3. enter "irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk" into the server field
4. enter "#ags" into the channel field
5. enter some nick
6. click "go"
and there you are.
which feels more friendly.
Thank you!! :D I was getting worried..
See y'all tomorrow :)
This might make me make my first game ;D
I'm interested, but my main problem is getting back to my flat by 7pm as I'm meant to finish work at 6:30pm, but I have had stay on until 7:15pm in the past. So I'm not saying change the time, just that I might start later (possibly very late). If I do decide to enter I will post when I'm starting and that means I may post my entry after the 8:15 deadline. I don't mind if its an accepted entry or not, but at least I've told you all in advance.
Also I'll be in costume while working on it as I'll still be dressed up from work.
@Bulbapuck: I've been using mibbit for ages and its great. Highly recommended.
Lemme guess, the theme's going to be "Halloween"? ;)

Say indie, would 7:30PM GMT do for you? And conversly, would that be acceptable by other contestants?
Most likely, that will be fine. But I don't want to be a hassle :P

Ok, the party will start at 19:30 rather than 19:00 (I also encourage the next host to make 19:30 the "official" start-time).
Bicilotti you are the greatest Italian ever.
Just don't tell Mario.
Argh! Can't connect - am I too late?
There is still 2 hours... two fuckin' hours! :o
*cough* gmt +1 :-[
That's a shame as this will interefere with my halloween plans :(
Ok, in about 17 minutes I will annnounce the theme here and on #IRC.
Mr ShiderMeSideways has volounteered to make a music track during the competition. It is mandatory you use the track in your game.
The theme is:
SKELETONS
As stated before,
ShiverMeSideways will compose a track and upload it here shortl. It is mandatory you use it in your game.
Right, hello, everyone. I've just finished the song. You can download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?jmzthzxoyzx (http://www.mediafire.com/?jmzthzxoyzx). Really glad I could participate this week too. Good luck to all the game makers! :)
Ah. At least I got something done finally, though it's utter crap. But I demand a special prize because I'm first :P

ever so slightly improved :=
I am presenting the game on behalf of an anonymous participant who contacted me earlier.
I myself think it's a great game with a good story and a cute bunny.

p.s. I don't know if it is possible to find previous volumes somewhere, I'll investigate the matters further.

Here is a compiled version of NsMn's game (for those who don't have the latest beta of AGS editor handy as he only provided source):

Have fun voting.
Ok, just finished up playing all the games, and my vote goes to Bulbapuck 'cos it felt the closest to a game IMHO.
Bulbapuck, obviously. (since I can't vote for myself) (well, technically I can, but I won't)
4 entries, great!
Thanks once again to
ShiverMeSideways who provided a music track!
LET THE VOTING BEGIN
Voting will close on Monday morning
Thanks for the votes guys :D
This was a tough one, but my vote goes to FSi because I've never laughed that hard at an hourgame in my life ;D
Speaking of which, I just done this:
http://www.mediafire.com/hourgames (http://www.mediafire.com/hourgames)
Will try to upload everything I've got there (at least the ones from Hourgame Saturdays). Files are on my other PC which is 100km away, so it won't happen fast, unless someone wants to help.
But at least it's something ._.
I'm going to vote FSi on this one.
Vote (and commets) time!
Indieboy: lovely art and a nice idea. It lacks a game though :P.
NsMn: Easily the best background of the contest, as Indiboy's puzzles are missing there.
FSi: clever entry (and lovely "repeat" feature). I was a bit disappointed to see the game had no ending, but let's face it, I can play it and see the bunny's death for hours. Also, this game has a readme. Yes, a README.
Bulbapuck: the most complete of the 4, has nice spites and 2 ending and some pixel hunts.
My vote goes to Bulbapuck
Im going to vote for Bulbapack too!
For all those who liked the hourgame song, I've made an extended version, featuring more jamming, a better organ sound and a down-tuned guitar! Enjoy: http://www.mediafire.com/?ttlyytelj0m (http://www.mediafire.com/?ttlyytelj0m).
Thanks Bici for allowing me to post this here!
Voting for Bulbapuck, because of the completeness.
The people decided!
This hourgame goes to Bulbapuck!
Bulbapuck, you have the honour of starting the next competition, this time in the Comp. & Act. thread, I suppose!
Trophies: you're kicking my ass in some chess games, you don't deserve *any*! More seriously, I've got a game in the pot and I can gladly add a little easter egg in your honour. Pm me if interested!
*Yaaaaaaaaaaaay* :D
Thanks, guys! I'll think of something awesome for next week, hope to see everyone then :)
