Hello and welcome to a hopefully weekly event, the Hourgame Saturday.
The purpose of Hourgame Saturday is, to encourage the amateur game-making, or to put it bluntly, to make you tear your ass off your chair and finally make something.
In this activity your task is to make an AGS game within a strict and a very short deadline (i.e. one hour).
Timeline:
The event takes place every (every other?) Saturday, starting at 7:00 pm GMT, when the theme is revealed on the IRC and in this thread. The participants then have one hour to make their entries and 15 more minutes for uploading. In brief: the deadline for entries is 8:15 pm.
Then the voting takes place till the Sunday afternoon
Basic rules:
- Participants should join IRC for rules and updates, but stickam/tokbox is fine as long as there's someone to relay the information.
- The theme is set by the previous week's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence.
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their games cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your game from scratch is strongly encouraged, though it is not forbidden to use music or artwork from public sources if you are allowed to (e.g. using public domain music tracks in your game is OK, but not really necessary). It is also possible to use a pre-existent AGS template for your game (e.g. Verb-Coin GUI).
- You cannot use the stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.
Uploading:
Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:
- http://www.mediafire.com/ (http://www.mediafire.com/)
- http://www.sendspace.com/ (http://www.sendspace.com/)
- http://www.rapidshare.com/ (http://www.rapidshare.com/)
- Or your own place.
Voting:
When voting, award every game with 1 to 10 score points (1 being lowest possible score). Entry with the highest score wins. In case of a draw the winner is decided upon a fight! To DEATH!! On CHAINSAWS AND LEPRECHAUNS!!! ...er, we'll see when we get there.
P.S. (READ THIS FIRST!)
That's a draft of the rules, revised a little by CodeJunkie.
The first compo will be today, yes.
Please post here if you're ok with the timeline (and especially if the timeline is NOT ok for you, but you'd like to join otherwise).
Well... I think 7:00pm GMT is like 3:00am for me. I'd join if it wasn't but hey, it's not your fault I'm a loser from Australia.
Enjoy your hourgames, folks!
I'm sort of confused when it comes to GMT, could someone tell me what time this is posted in GMT?
If it's what I think it is, then the time is slightly annoying, but I'm probably still in :)

Now when I post it it's around 12:08 GMT.
Thanks FSi! that was what I was suspecting.
There is a chance that I'm slightly drunk by then := But I don't think there's a "don't drink and make games" rule, so all is well.
Well, seeing as I couldn't be in on your cool GMT timezone I had an hourgame competition all by myself, in my own Western Australian timezone, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Jesus freaking crisps, I forgot how hard it is to make a game in an hour! It was down to the very last minute to squeeze all this crud in.
Nevertheless, I am slightly insane to present the 3 colour marvel that is:
CAPTAIN HAT

DOWNLOAD SUCKAS (http://www.box.net/shared/rhcnhcdgp3)
(left click uses, right click looks, because of time restrictions there is no inventory gui, so CAPTAIN HAT automatically uses his items when you interact with things and people)
Yo, if this is a regular occurence I think it's worth getting this an official place on the Competitions board rather than Talk & Chat. I'm sure after another successful edition it will be considered.
8PM where I'm sitting.
YESSSS.

Insane, surreal, great. I like it.

One thing: the voting system semms a bit, err, unforgiving to me. Maybe it's better just to pick the favourite one?

That could work. In fact, it did work the previous time, but I was trying to try something new :(
Upd: Just noticed, 40 minutes till the thing starts. Come join us and feel the magnificience of IRC!

Got carried away, but he wasn't the Awakener when he had some anyway.
EDIT2: Join IRC
Ah, IRC. Damn, I thought it'd be happening on Stickam.
Oh well, too late to start downloading and setting things up now.
I'll be there next time, duuuuuudes.

theme has not been chosen yet
Watch this boards and participate.
Okay. I was asked to jump in as host, and so I did. Since exams are draining my creativity, the theme is just
Studying. Or school in general. Or anything that can be twisted to suit that.
60 minutes from now on. (Plus 15 for testing, uploading and that shiz.) Have at thee!

EDIT2: I forgot to say: 2 endings ;D
And I have... failed.
Yep. Tried to make a wac-a-mole type game and couldn't get the code right. Tooo baaad.

Hurr, I feel so ashamed.
Here is my entry: Study Hard!

Tried to script a game where yoy had to avoid burgers and sex and gambling in order to study. Rawdraws failed me.

Okay, FSi's ISP is being wacky, so he has some more time to finish the upload. Feel free to play the other entries already, though.

'45 minutes and counting to upload 586kB' doesn't fall into 'wacky' under my classification, but since this could be read by children I have to agree on this term.
Upd: appears to be uploaded by now, http://misendeavour.com/fsi_studygame.rar (http://misendeavour.com/fsi_studygame.rar) must be the url of it. Music tomorrow, if the so-called internet service provider would allow me to.
Alright... all the games are there, so let the voting commence! (And end exactly 24h from now. Refer to the timestamp.)
OK, my connection got back from the land of dead and I managed to upload the full version. This is not an updated version of the game, all the music was made within the same hour.
Merlin the Almost Dark Wizard (http://misendeavour.com/files/merlinthealmostdarkwizard.rar)
I have played through both FSi's and Bulbapuck's entries, and both made me giggle like a schoolchild.
Sadly, I am having trouble downloading Mazoliin's and Gord's entries. I will try downloading them later, otherwise it seems a trifle unfair to vote after only being able to play half of the games.
QuoteTried to script a game where yoy had to avoid burgers and sex and gambling in order to study. Rawdraws failed me.
That is the bestest game idea ever!
Mazoliin's second link (for an updated game with music) is broken, but here's a pack of all I could get:
All four games in one archive, 2.6MB (http://www.mediafire.com/?5nym52zdbm5)
Ah, splendid, thank you FSi :)
Having consumed the final two games (whilst also consuming milk and a terribly unhealthy sandwich), I shall now go into a short discussion of each one, before announcing who my vote goes for.
Bulbapuck: All the hallmarks of a true hourgame - a colour palette picked from a set of neon children's crayons, rather odd storyline and insulting the player when he/she beats the game. Good job! :D
FSi: I was impressed by your custom interface (that must have taken a fair portion of your hour!) and I found the ending really amusing - that I didn't see it coming is both awesome and something I am perplexed by. An hour well spent!
Gord10: The fact that there was no ending was slightly disappointing. However, I was actually quite impressed by the game's mechanics themselves. I enjoyed the way you didn't bother with animation and just had a number of still images. I would probably really enjoy playing a longer game in this style, actually. Very creative!
Mazoliin: Nice graphics and interesting concept! It would have been fun if you had hidden a super secret special ending in there (if you did and I didn't find it, then ignore this 8)). Impressive work for a one hour game, anyway!
With my short examinations of each game complete, I announce that my vote is hereby placed towards FSi's tally. Thanks for the games, folks! :D

Thanks!
I could barely complete the game in one hour, it would take one more hour to prepare animations.
But being with no ending is intentional, I couldn't express the main idea of the game better.
Voting for Mazoliin's Study Tree, because I loved the graphics.
I'd vote for myself, but I really can't, so Mazoliin's Study Tree it is for all the zen meditativeness it contained.

... insulting the player when he/she beats the game.
That's the bad ending ;) Thanks for the kind words :)
This one was really hard, but I think my vote goes to
FSi Because I think that ending was awesome ^^
Good job guys!
Ben: Sorry, no secret ending, so you can stop looking for it.
And it's a tight draw between FSI & Gord10, but I'll vote for... Gord10! That game is so true to reality.
Hmm its tough choice, but I am going to go with Mazoliin's entry since I love the character and want to see more of him! Well done and congratulations on a second week of New Hourgame!
Well well well, vote time. This hourgame round was packed with nice producions!
Bulbapuck: a wonderful miniature, which involves hurting a bastard midget fantasy-creature with a not so obvious puzzle.
Graphics aren't comparable to Fountain of Youth, but I can easily see past that. Also, the books hidden by the demon
Spoiler
are a blue cup, which delivers a nice message: "fuck school, study AGS."
Thumbs up!
Mazoliin: a metaphysical adventure, which for sure revealed that studying is nothing more than looking into our souls. That, along with excellent graphics and a drifting cloud makes a lovely little game,
Gord10: brilliant concept (I must disagree with Ben this time, the everlasting loop adds something unique to this one) and nice execution (there are no animations but the game world feels very alive)
FSi: the only game with an animation (and what a clever one!). Simple and direct, best joke of the pack.
Soooooooooooooooo, I choose
Gord10, but let me say that all the 4 games were interesting and clever (it's nice to see a bare mechanics or two made in an hour).
Yay for everyone!
I am going to vote for Gord's because I liked how you could do all the mundane things most adventures never let you do.
I vote for FSi.
My mum, dad, nephew, cat, dog and aunt vote for FSi, too. =D
Another vote for FSi here. You gotta admire that much determination to participate. Also, the game's pretty fun. :=
About one hour left for voting, people. Better hurry up a bit.
So, unless I miscounted... victory goes to FSi, Mazoliin and Gord are tied for second place. Congratulations to all of you, and thanks to all participants! No trophies because I suck. Now bedtime. ;)
Yay. I am happiness! :=
Congratulations FSi, a well-deserved win.
I had a lot of fun (despite getting zero votes :=) and I hope this will be a weekly activity! If it is, I'm in next week to :)
PS. thanks bic for the kind words :D
Spoiler
The blue cup was actually a programming error caused by me forgetting to create a walkcycle for the demon, but I decided to keep it cause it was funny to me :P
Your game was in fact the one most true to the classics of hourgames :=
I choose to take that as a compliment, thanks! ;)
Congratulations FSi! If I'd have voted, i'd be on you... :)
