I require the services of a good artist. Prefered style - as life-like as possible. Failing that, as less cartoony as possible. Project information - a remake of a much-acclaimed IF game (whose name will not be, of course, revealed here). The artist will have to do all the graphics and animations, I'm afraid, but will have absolutely zero pressure since I'll be working on it and LSL2 Point and Click at the same time myself, meaning there's no need to hurry. Game-user interface already thought out, as well as some other things, but the artist that accepts this will not find me a dictator - absolutely everything - even stuff that's not graphic related - is negotiable.

Contact me at catsfan915@hotmail.com. I promise you, whoever you are, if you take the offer, we'll make something to be reckoned with.

PS - Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reach the author of the original IF game, so I don't have his permission yet. If that bothers you, well, it's my loss, I guess.  :(

EDIT - I'll be going on Holiday for about two weeks, so if you try to contact me I won't even know about it until I get back. Just wait, and I'l return, eventually.

Me:
Under these circumstances, an artist may not be, of course, interested.

Me:
Why don't you finish one before the other?  I guess it's not really essential...sometimes it's nice to have two different projects to work on.  If you get bored with one thing, you can switch right over to the other one, and then back to the other one later on.

In 15 days, I haven't got a single reply from an interested artist. I get the message. Consider the case closed, I'll find someone somewhere else.

Jeez, 15 days? Sorry you're going to have to wait longer then that if you want help.
did you try ACR (need help with a game)?
People sometimes get business like that.
If you really need help I guess you could try #ags but people will just most likely get pissed off.

You're probably going to have to do the art yourself because the truth is, people like you are also busy working on their games and don't have time to do all the art AND animations for somebody elses game.
I don't know maybe you would, but would you seriously consider doing all the art for someone elses game? I'm sorry, its just how it is.  :-\

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

I consider this last reply to be unnecessarily hostile, especially since the last remark is very unfair - it wouldn't be just MY game, it would be OUR game. I proposed a partnership from the very beginning. Why should I not propose this if I can't draw anything? That cripples me. Why should I be content with crappy graphics if I can find someone who can actually DRAW and HELP me, as OPPOSED to doing all the work for me? I mean, come on! I've read some other replies for other people with similar porblems. Aren't you - ALL - being more than a little severe?

Well, if you do go ahead and make the game with crappy graphics, you can later import over them, or use the new thing Chris is looking into doing with a graphics dump for ease of reimporting.

If you finish the game with retarded graphics, and are trying to 'sell' it to prospective artists, they could download the game, and decide then if they want to work with you.
I understand that is not the most ideal situation, but its one.

Sorry, but throwing a hissy fit just because no one responded in a thread isn't good PR, nor a good way to get an artist.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Thank you, Scummbuddy. I mean it. And pardon the fit, I've had a lousy day (read week). That's no excuse, of course. Again, thank you.

scummbuddy had a good suggestion. Thats what I did for bob's quest...then I got an artist, and now, maybe someday, the actual remake might be finished, bith playible graphics and no bugs

Sorry if I seemed hostile, I was also in a bad mood, but that dosen't mean it was right, like I said sorry.
I guess you are right you would be giving a lot of credit to the artist by doing a partnership thing.

I think you should do what Scummbuddy said, make a "skeleton" version and then re-import new graphics.  I am very busy but if you do this and I like you game and it seems promising,
I might be able to do some art, not all art but maybe a few characters or something. What type of style are you looking for?

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

It's all right, agsking. You've all been very helpful, I'll start a skeleton right away.
BTW, this was more than a "Quest for the Artist" thing, I might as well say now - I was hoping to start a series of games, called the Graficom series (graphic+infocom), all IF remakes, and I thought it'd be nice to have a "resident artist". But you're absolutely right - noone'll be intrested if I've got nothing to show them first.

Working with crappy graphics is very frustrating - there's no sense of "reward" or "accomplishment". Anyway, I've uploaded the intro to my project, it's at http://www.freewebs.com/skimbleshanks/compiled.zip (right click - save as). I know it's very short, but it sort of sets the mood, and shows any potential interested artist how far I want to go as concerns detail (considering I've used black and white stickmen, I think I actually made it very detailed!), and maybe the theme I've going for.

Downloading now... That was sure fast!

EDIT: BTW wtf is the IT game?

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Say that again? What does "wft"? If it means "what the fuck" and instead of IT you meant IF, it's Anchorhead, for inform.

Ok, dude.. first of all.. Being a good artist is about 20% talent, and 80% practice..

Seriously, what you're trying to do is rip a story of a game that's already been made and just put in some graphics that somebody else has made and take credit for the game?

Just give it a shot... and there are a lot of believers that graphics don't make the adventure game, it's the puzzles, so we won't be bothered if they look a bit amateur..

just don't give up
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Ok, in order...
1st, I realize that, but some people (read me) just can't seem to make a straight line in paint without using Ctrl...

2nd, no. The author of this magnificent game is Michael Gentry. This is merely an attempt to give it new life. It's a wonderful story, and I think other adventurers should also be able to enjoy. That's my goal.

3rd, no. No amateur. It won't do. This is an excellent game in text form, and the only way to port it to graphic adventuring is to make everything properly.

4th, thanx for the encouragement. ;)

PS - I still haven't found anyone. Oh well, there must be someone out there.

I love to help people with graphics problems, and others help me too. but you just sound very lazy! If you can't make a str8 line without ctrl... use ctrl... and if you dont want to, keep practising untill you can!

You can compare making graphics to golf. If you want to be a good golf player, you need to practice sometimes thousand times, to make a little change in your hit. Same to graphics. I'm practising also alot, and when it comes to drawing with a graphics tablet, it's also rubbish. But I keep practising cause I know I'm getting better by practice.
So here is something you could try doing

1. Just use paint and do pixel art like I did here :

2. Use a drawing tablet, and keep practising or draw it first on normal paper, and then draw over the lines.
3. Use a 3D render program, where I am pretty good at, in comparisation to normal drawing! here is an example of a train that I'm working on right now :

And you can always use Photoshop or PaintShopPro to edit your picture, the way you want. Everyone can draw, but you practice, practice and practice.

One little last advice. Don't look at others so much what they make. Be happy with your skills untill now, make a game with these skills, and get some comments on it. Set a goal for yourself that your next game will look better, because you aren't from the day on the other suddenly a great artist. It requires patients, practice and devotion.

I hope this will help you a bit, and I look forward seeing some art from you!

Recreating Anchorhead as a graphic adventure? Ambitious...  ;)

About contacting the author, have you tried the rec.arts.int-fiction newsgroup?
