Title: I would like your view/opinion on positioned GUI game Interaction panel..
Post by: barefoot on Thu 04/08/2011 06:41:11
Hi

I would like your view/opinion on positioned GUI game interaction panel..

Eg: Fire weapon buttons and labels on GUI etc.

Along the top or bottom of screen?

If you could also give your ethnic/culture that would be useful (research).

many thanks

Half black?  WHAT A LIAR.

Everyone knows that only white people can eat sloppy joes.  Successfully.

If you're talking about firing a weapon, I wouldn't have a gui button for that at all.  Now you could have a but to enable weapons, but you don't want to have to keep going back to a button for firing or reloading because that's just poor design at the end of the day.  We have so many superior alternatives available (mice with more than 2 buttons, keyboards, gamepads) that limiting core functions to a gui is really unnecessary and distracting.  As far as 'where' to position the buttons, that's not really important since no matter where they are you still have to move the mouse some distance to click on them.

I am a clown mime.

I am half man, half dutch.

For anything permanent my personal preference is at the bottom.

I am half-assed. But that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, a screenshot would help make me make my decision.

Make me make my?!7?!

+1

And I assume the game in question is this one:

Hi

the reason I am asking is to get a general feel of peoples affordability regarding controls.

Also, different cultures do see/view things differently like a colour in one country may represent one thing but in another may represent something else.

Sorry if this sounds technical but it's an issue that intrigues me and of course knowledge for future game making.

ProgZmax and Mods: I agree about having to use buttons to fire. I think using keyboard is the better option.

cheers for your answers.

Assuming it's for that game M0ds mentioned - the control panel for a plane belongs at the bottom of the screen, not the top. Furthermore, if the only point of the GUI is to instruct the player which keys to press, then it should disappear after the tutorial. It's a waste of real estate to continuously display instructions like "press B for bomb" when the player already knows that.

How much movement is with the mouse? Do you fly the planes with the mouse by clicking? Or is it with the arrow keys?

If you move with the mouse I would say use right click for firing and you could even shortcut dropping bombs with the wheel (for those that have it).

If you control using the arrows, than all control needs to be from the keyboard. It's poor design to make the player use the mouse to click on a button in a GUI to shoot :P

A firm NO to a GUI for shooting.

Hi

My question did not necessarily point to my latest game in production 'Tiger Hawk Fighter' but points taken.

To Radiant:

The GUI also happens to display height, speed, destroyed targets and plane being used as well as weapons available (along with keys to use for us with low memories).

As far as displaying Keys to use I myself quite often 'forget' during the game which keys do what, especially if there are a lot.

To Snake:

As far as Tiger Hawk Fighter is concerned some screens have a scrolling object background giving the illusion of movement.

Also I have used Keys to fire weapons and not via buttons which kind of makes real sense.

All your comments are well welcomed and observed for future reference.

cheers
