Title: Indiana Jones Sprites/backgrounds
Post by: Steel Drummer on Tue 14/02/2006 19:57:32
I am at some point going to make an Indiana Jones game. I have noticed that all the Indy fan-games use ripped sprites from fate of atlantis or last crusade. How or where can I get/download these?

1. Play game.
2. Take screenshot.
3. Pick sprite from screenshot.

Or get the Costume Ripper program, which will save you bundles of time:

If you want to make a good game, try do the graphics by yourself it should give better experience than to see the ripped graphics.
I know that it will take you much longer, but in the end i think is is worth it.

The fan project below doesn't use ANY ripped material

And apparently that turned out to be very time consuming ;)

Edit: Seriously, though - if you're making the game to practice your game-making (not necessarily your drawing) skills, by all means use ripped graphics, despite what people around here tell you. It would raise the chances of the game actually getting done considerably. And since you're making a fan game, it's pretty useless to waste time on re-creating perfectly good sprites just for the sake of a false sense of originality. If you did, it should be for practice only - and you might as well get THAT practice by creating sprites for another project, which is entirely yours.

Those of us who've drunk from the fountain wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about... :P

Use Scummex to rip backgrounds from pretty much any LEC game:
http://scummvm.org/downloads/scummexwin32.exe

Its new and constantly being worked on by the SCUMMVM team.

Also, try scummrevisited:
http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/programs/scummrev2.zip
http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/programs/scummrev3.zip
http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/programs/SCUMMRev5_Build130.zip

I would download each version, becouse each version has a feature that they other one doesn't. Meaning Scummrev2 will have more compatibility and some more features than Scummrev5, while vice versa, Scummrev5 may have new features not available in the other two. Catch my drift?

Another good program is scumm16:
http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/programs/scumm2d.zip
Use this for Games such as Indy and even the hard to find resources games such as Zak McKracken and Zak256. I like this program.

Other good ones to try:
Costume ripper: http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/programs/costrip15.zip
Font viewer:
http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/programs/charlie.zip

For more useful tools for your Indy game, check out these sites as a whole:

scummvm.org

LucasRipper also ripps all backgrounds, character files, objects, animations and fonts.: http://tobybear.phreque.com/files/LucasRipper.zip

Thanks for all those downloads. I tried to do some Indy sprites based on Indy's "look" in FoA but they turned out really sucky. How do you FoY guys get sprites that good? Do you draw sprites on paper and scan 'em into a bmp image or do you use windows paint or what?

There was either an Interview with or a tutorial by Miez which explained how he did it. Am I right m0ds?

Check out the FoY site and look up tutorials. Check under m0ds signature to get to the FoY site.

Yodaman, yep - the normal process is to draw some sketches on paper, if necessary from reference photos, scan those in and pixel them up! I don't know entirely how its done myself so it might be worth another tutorial ;)
