Title: Kings Quest Collection
Post by: Domino on Sun 07/09/2003 05:52:13
this was a box set of all Kings Quest games plus a few extras that Sierra released a couple of years ago. I was wondering who else bought this collection. It is always great to go back and play KQ1 on a modern computer. I bought it back in 2000, and still enjoy every minute of it. Does anyone else here own this amazing collection?

I do I do! I bought it at a yard sale for a dollar. I was amazed at the amount of games that came with it. It's the best.

I've got it. It's so great, but I can't run them on my new computer, only my old one with Win98. XP doesn't do DOS, so I have to download VGA versions to even play some of them. I wish there was a KQ6vga...argh. That's one of the best ones, in my humble opinion. "Alexander opens his magic map..."

PS: The appleII games and the Laura Bow games 0wn as well.

What do you mean? it is vga,

you mean you can get an ega or cga  version? that would be cool

Well, I didn't mean vga, that was sort of a mistype, but XP won't go to 256 colors.

What did you mean then? ???  KQ6 still has better graphics than most VGA remakes...

Anyway, I would love to own this set but whenever I look around online it's always exorbitantly priced.  What was the original price of this set?

Figures.  I've never seen it online for less that 80 (and that's pretty unusual).

That reminds me of when I had an EGA monitor and I wanted to play sierra games that supposedly only worked with VGA.

I just grabbed the ega driver file from other sierra games that supported ega, copied it over into the directory of the vga game I wanted to play... and it worked perfectly.  ;D

More on topic though... yes I too have the kings quest collection. (Along with most the other quest ocllections :P)

I have an older KQ collection, released somewhere around 1994 - it contains the first six KQ games, and demos of other sierra games. I also have Collector's edition KQ 7

I bought a similar version in germany containing KQ1-6 and some other demo material.  What's the story with KQ7 anyway?  I've never played it, isn't it just a first person shooter?  How and why did they get away with doing that?!?

KQ7 was an adventure game. KQ8 was a 3d action/adventure like tomb raider.

I played a demo of KQ8, and truthfully didn't like it too much. I don't know why, probably because the point and click interface make it great...

And to make myself clear here, finally, I meant that KQ6 won't run on the XP resolution, it needs 256 colors and the lowest XP will go is 16 bit. It doesn't even run. I have to use my old beater with 98 to even play it. When I typed "vga" I was really tired.

And I think I got mine for around 60 or 70 on amazon a few years back.

KQ6 works fine in XP for me, and I don't need to change any settings.

You can set programs to run in 256 colours in XP. (Right click>Properties>Compatability>Run in 256 Colours). Has helped me get many an oldgame working...

BTW, DinghyDog, Windows XP *does* go into 256 colours mode.

1) Right-click your desptop.
2) Select properties
3) Goto "Settings"
4) Click the button called "Advanced"
5) Click the tab called "Adapter"
6) Click the button called "List All Modes"

There ya go. Pick any 256 colour-resolution you require.
