Hey guys, I've fallen in love with King's Quest IV's backgrounds lately as I've been playing it with my four year old (she's crazy about it). I thought that it was just too bad that they didn't remake this game in VGA graphics... they're already lovely and everything, all they need is a little paintover with Photoshop. I love the fact that they're so bright and lively -- goes with the whole "fairy Genesta theme" and reminds me a bit of 'The Island of the Beast' in King's Quest VI. On my extra time, I've been having fun in Photoshop and have over eight backgrounds 3/4th done (I even made some Rosella sprites and GUI). I thought that since I was putting a lot of work into this, that I'd like to give it to someone who may use and make something out of it. The Magic Mirror team don't really want them, so I was wondering if I should just stick them in the Contribution thread? Or are there people out there interested in another remake? Is that inappropriate? Either way, I'm really enjoying immersing myself in the King's Quest world, lol. ;D
P.S. I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong forum.

I think these look nice but unless you want feedback specifically on the art I'll need to move this to Adventure Talk.
Yeah, I think I'd be best. Thanks ProgZmax. :)
What a great idea, why don't you find a good team and go for it? I know that perhaps you're busy. That's understandable. Anyway, always nice to see you around Miss!
Heya Dualnames, it's nice to see you around too!
So far, unlike the different projects that were let downs, King's Quest I've stuck with. It's probably because the King's Quest series hold a special place in my heart. Also, the fact that my girls are captivated with them even though they're harsh and pixely compared to the high quality games on Xbox 360 and the Wii we have nowadays, adds a lot to it. To tell you the truth, to me, it acknowledges the value and importance that adventure games still hold. Part of this charm and magic I have felt as a child will live on with my own children. This to me warms my heart and is priceless.
If there are people as enchanted with the King's Quest series, as I am, maybe some will be interested get implicated once I make enough backgrounds and sprites.
For now, I'll just keep on, happily Photoshopping away. ;)
Beautiful work, Nightfable. :D
I would love to see a remake of this game. :)

Beautiful work, Nightfable. :D
I also agree with that. But to this day, I still love the original graphics of KQ4.
It is one of my favorite Adventure Games ever.
Some of the shadows could be a little darker, but other than that I think you're doing a fine job.
I never did play KQ4. Only KQ 1, and 5 to 8 (possibly 2 as well).
I just love that house in the tree. It's so intruiging. :)
I think you have really nailed the Sierra art style. As the other Ryan said, the shadows could be a little more pronounced, but a fine job indeed.
You may want to offer your services to the people at:

who are working on a remake of King's Quest 4
Hey! These are great. I worked on the King's Quest III remake, so I know how much fun it is to do this. Your work looks amazing! I love it! I hope you continue on.
Bt
Nightfable, super!!! ;D
Like mkennedy said, there already is a king's quest 4 remake being made. But your remade graphics look great. Very painterly yet very true to the original.
Wow, really nice! I love the portrait you did of Rosella...this is really nice work!
:)
Nice artwork and a nicely done VGA style! I really like the second pic, showing the close-up of Rosella. I had thought about doing a KQ4 remake at one time. As it's the only one now lacking voices, since 1-3 were remade. But now I'm looking into creating my own adventure game. While I am fine with doing my own graphics and animation, I may be looking for another artist. As I will be doing all of the programming. Do you have any other art work I may see?

Hey guys! ;D
Agentbauer may be helping me work on a KQ4 remake! Exciting! :D
Thanks for all the awesome feedback btw!!
The Space Quest 4.5 guy, correct? If so, good luck to you two!
If Agentbauer's not interested, I'm still having a blast working on the backgrounds and portraits on my spare time. ^^
I can't really focus on anything else (other game projects), since I'm already so busy with my kids as it is.
Anyway, if anyone else is interested in helping me work on a KQ4 remake (or at least a demo), I would much appreciate it! ;) I just suck at scripting.
I'd like to help you out, I'm giving my bank account credentials that Calin has already. (Call it a hunch), but I'm terribly busy. I'm sure however you'll find good coders pretty easily around these parts. :D
Thanks Dualnames! :)
I might be happy to do some AGS coding, since it's been a while...
Depends on how much, tho, as I'm working on a 2D physics engine.
Your artwork is amazing! I've always thought that KQ4 was long overdue for a remake. I would like to help in any way that I can if you do decide to make a remake independent of the one that mkennedy linked to... programming, voice acting, proofreading, whatever you need!

Sure, TerranRich, any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! ;D Agentbauer is currently working on the scripting and music and I'm taking care of the paint-overs, animations and portraits.
Let me know what you'd be interested in.
We're attempting to get a demo out there, that way it's easier to progress in little steps. ^^
Here's a recent screen I've been working on, Rosella now walks up and down. Now I need to take care of side to side - wow, who knew walk cycles would be so tedious. :P

Looks amazingg! But I'm sure you already know that.
if you ask me, these backgrounds are even better than the ones made public by the kq4 remake team. besides looking more professional, they capture the feel of the original better. if i were a team member, i would seriously consider working with you as it would be a waste to have two independent protects (seeing as how most remake projects never reach completion).
I don't know if I killed it or not, but I don't like how flat the shadows looked. Here's a quick mockup.

@ Ryan Timothy
Did you compress that image a lot? It looks blurrier than the original one posted. I can't really judge the difference between shadows fairly because the blurriness makes everything look chunkier.
No, I didn't compress it, I only upsized it with the width/height html stretching.
If you're on Firefox you can disable the blurring of sprites by doing this (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=39955.msg526346#msg526346). There may be other ways to avoid the blurring by now, but this is one that I know. I'm sure half the AGS'rs don't have blurry sprites because they've disabled it.
You can also right click to view the image, but you'll only see it as 320x200 instead of the upscaled size that Nightfable has uploaded hers.
In the mean time I've uploaded a larger image.
Yeah, I think you definitely gave it more dimension. Especially the shadow that the house is casting behind it.
Thanks Ryan, I'll keep that in mind for my backgrounds. :) Did you smooth it over with an airbrush tool?
I pretty much just went over all the existing shadows with a low opacity wide brush, and touched up a little here and there. Hoping I wouldn't destroy the image. :P
It looks great, thanks!!! :D
I absolutely love the artwork in this thread. Are both the Lolotte and Rosella portraits original artwork as well?
Really beautifully drawn, richly coloured backgrounds that give the EGA originals some depth.
Please post more of your artwork!
Hey, nice artwork. I know myself another little girl who'd go nuts for a kq4 remake so if I'm any help count me in. Sadly I'm just a composer so I'm not a big help but whatever! Hope you get to finish that!
Thanks guys! :D We'll eventually make a "In production" thread for this remake and post more screenshots and other graphics. We're currently working hard on finishing the intro, then we can hop on to the demo.

Is this still alive?
The stuff looks great. I think you should contact MMGames and see if they want you on their team. It seems pointless to have 2 remakes going, because fan projects don't often get finished and it would really suck if neither this or the MMGames one got completed.
They have good programmers, but IIRC they need help in the art department in general.

That'd lose points with those of us who don't like the fact that KQIX-Team/King Alexander is part of the Magic Mirror project...

yeah, but it would gain points for everyone else. (because there would be a much better chance of completion, and the work would probably be better all together)
*pssst! this is atec from the tsl forums*

First of all, KQIX is probably dead. Dead as a doornail. But assuming it isn't, are you saying that just because someones involved in the production of a game that you like is also working on a game that you are not in favor of, you should abandon the "good" game. What kind of logic is that? ???
Lookin' good nightfable! What happened to the asimov project? I remember it looking promising too.
keep up the good work:)

I sent you a PM Nightfable. ;)
So I see from your comments in another thread that you're still working on this. How is it coming along?
Yes, and it's coming along great. :) We have our own paid domain and we're going to start an in production thread very soon. http://www.kq4remake.com/

Has this game been put on hold? Sorry if I missed any other topic that may have stated this or not.
