Title: Language question
Post by: simulacra on Wed 18/05/2005 20:20:04
Pardon a non-native English speaker, but what do you call the plastic tape that are used to limit access to locations? I have not found the word in any dictionary.

No, no. It has red and white diagonal stripes and is used by police forces to restrict access to crime scenes for example (though they usually have a blue and white pattern and the word POLICE).

No, I think you mean police tape - the yellow & black tape that is usually placed around a crime scene? Just call it police tape.

EDIT: Heh, okay, you posted while I was posting. Okay, yeah. Just call it police tape.

Uhm, maybe it's obvious but I can't think what the actual tape is called. Ã, You'd call that kind of police barricade a cordon, if that name extends to the tape I am not sure. Ã, "Cordon tape" appears to be used quite a bit on google so probably.

Okay, but what do you call this tape if it's not used by the police? This is blocking an elevator in the game I'm working on.

In the business world they appear to call it "Barrier tape", I think you could get away with calling it whatever you want really - restriction tape, barrier tape, hazard tape, cordon etc.
