Call me Mr. Stupid mcstupidheadvonstupidofstupidlandwithastupidsauce and stupid on the side, but isn't there already a 3D module for AGS?

Wouldn't it be as simple as making the character invisible, setting limits on movement (so rather than moving steadily, either clicking on an icon or pressing a key either turns you to face a direction or moves you a preset distance in that direction), and rendering an interesting world set up to avoid people being able to phaze through walls, etc?

After all, you can look 360 degrees in the AGS3D already.
I also really liked my old signature.

Yes, you could use Ags3d to render the 3d view.
You just need to render a sky box (the six images should be 90 degrees apart and with a 90 degree field of view):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skybox_%28video_games%29
and put the Ags3d camera right in the middle.
I'd use at least 256x256 images for a 320x200 game and 512x512 images (if you can!) for a 640x480 game. Could be pretty expensive.

[EDIT] Here's a demo game:

Using these images also rendered with Ags3d:

I just eyeballed the camera angles, so they may not line up exactly.
You can imagine the rest (using Blender for the original images, for example).
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II
