I'm designing a room for a game I'm currently making.

It could be just me but I find that if you have the game's music playing in the background WHILST your creating it it actually helps get your 'creative juices' flowing so to speak.

Does anybody else do anything like this when designing/coding? If not I recommend it :)

I find a similar "tone" in other screenshots that I will use for "inspiration."    Then I just paint over it and tell my publisher that its %100 original!

I'm currently making LIMBO OF THE LOST II and am using background from Disney's Pooh & Friends Interactive DVD-ROM.

Middle through right, I'd guess.

That meme is dating surprisingly fast.  :P

I think we had a thread like this awhile back ... something about "what inspires you" or something like that?  I can't really remember.

My answer is the same now as it was then; I put on movies to get my creative juices flowing.  Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Galaxy Quest, Shrek (only the first one), etc.  Movies that have a lot of imagination (or just inspire me) really get me motivated to be creative.  Music is part of it ... but I'm more of a visual guy.

Labyrinth!!!

Now there is a film my friends. In fact, Labyrinth in itself is one huge graphic adventure.

Did they ever bring out a game of it? If not, a fan game may be quite the hit!

They did indeed. It's one of the lesser known LucasFilm games featuring a precursor to the SCUMM system. Controls are a bit cumbersome, especially if you select parser words by using the joystick. The concept of starting the game as a text adventure and then - Wizard of Oz style - switch to graphic and joystick control once you enter the fantasy world was quite brilliant. I think Douglas Adams (yes, THE Douglas Adams) was responsible for that idea.

I always put music on when I create anything. All kinds of it are put into the playlist and then played in a random order.

Glad you found something that works for ya, DazJ, but, to me at least, the idea of listening to my game's own soundtrack on repeat makes me cringe. But (hahaha) maybe that's cause my music's not all that special. Either way - sure - who's going to animate pixels in silence?

Could be just me, but listening to any one thing repeatedly, no matter what or how good, will do damage to that music in your perception of it.

Guys like Brian Wood deliberately pick music from which they hope to draw tone: Gritty Music augments gritty creative output, etc. Other folks, like (I dunno) Terry Gilliam, listen to classical music faithfully. I've also heard that Cormac McCarthy chooses, always, to work alone in complete silence.

So, like I said, it's great that you've found something that works for you. The only reliable device I've found so far is coffee.

NEVER, and I mean it in upper case, NEVER listen to your own music while creating something. Just don't. Soundtracks from your favorite movies/games are preffered.

Coffee works just fine for me.

Just like not sleeping for about a day.

Just like libido.

:D But it works 100% for me. I'm listening to the game music and as silly as it sounds, the music is creating the room for me. I'd SWEAR by listening to your game music ;)

It's better to listen to radio, unless you have a massive media library, when creating something so you don't associate certain works with certain songs or vice versa. It will get disturbing later on if a certain song or album always reminds you of some specific corridor in some some specific game or such...
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

I actually do. I write a song and then make the room..ends up pretty cool and exciting.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)
