Title: Mittens 2004: Electric Boogaloo
Post by: MrColossal on Wed 25/02/2004 22:29:04
Hello,

My name is Eric and I'll be hosting Mittens this year at my camp in Sacandaga.

Here's the deal. My father agreed to let you all stay at my camp for a week, there aren't enough rooms in the house for everyone to sleep inside so there will still be some tentification needed. There's a grocery store nearby, we have running water/a kitchen/a phone/a bathroom/a private beach/and the best part: An Atari.

The majority of people will more than likely make fun of me and say "This isn't a camp! This is a summer home!" But when I was a kid it was a camp with no television, no phone, and certainly no Atari.

Friday, July 23rd will be the day Mittens 2004: Electric Boogaloo starts. I won't be posting the address on the internet so if you're going either PM me or Email me. Last time I asked for people to PM me 2 did. So at the moment there are 8 people I know are going and only 2 of them have the address.

For a rough idea of where my camp is check for Broadalbin in New York state. It's upstate and near a Sacandaga Reservoir which my camp is on. My camp is about 15 minutes from Broadalbin.

18 and up because that is what my father says. Because the world is a dangerous place and my camp is full of demons and monsters he also asks you to sign a waiver saying you won't sue him if you're attacked by a wandering gelatinous cube while going for a swim at my camp.

Besides, if you can be defeated by a gelatinous cube you don't deserve to live anyway...

I don't care what you have to say about signing a waiver because what you say doesn't matter. If you want to come, sign it and give it to me, if you want to come but don't want to sign it then you can't come. It's simple and not a crazy thing to ask.

Any questions?

Any other questions?

I totally PM'd you.

I'm 20, and I can bring a tent. Let those old fashion boys from across the Atlantic stay in the nice cushy rooms. Or we can play B-omb on the atari for high scores to see who gets them.  maybe frogger

Okay, how many Brits are coming? If possible, we could all try to book the same flight. I've looked into it, and they're around £500, give or take £50.

You want my autograph? I'd never say no.

It flies to New York City, because flights to Albany airport (which is closer to the campsite) are much more expensive. Some sort of bus/lift would be needed to get to the camp, which is about 200 miles, or about 3 1/2 hours' drive.

There's a map of the journey from NYC to the camp here (http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?ed=xTowJeV.wimQQVd6MsEKU7USFw--&csz=broadalbin+new+york&country=uscsz=new+yorkcountry=us)

My girlfriend Lorena wants to go, but I am realistic and she won't if she's the only girl/couple... So, Mr.C, Is your girlfriend coming? Any more girls? SSH's? Darth's?

Please, I would like to know that soon...  :-\

I'd like to attend, but i'm sure there is a sign at the gates that says 'NO NEWBIES ALLOWED'

So, i'd drive all the way there to only be turned around.

Sounds like alot of fun though.  :(

I'm definately interested in coming!  I have to be in Michigan on July 31st so this could segway nicely into that.  Hmmm ...

Farlander - I'll talk to Sara and see if she'd like to come!  I'm sure she would, she loves camping & Monkey Island ... she'd be in heaven!

I'll look into air-fare and stuff this week.  I'd probably have to rent a car and do some serious driving, but that's alright, I love road-trips too.

Eric - I'll PM you when I know for sure if I can make it!

Don't think you'll be able to get from NY to Michigan on a Segway (http://www.segway.com/) over the course of a day...

Everything sounds good.... I once inherited my uncle's original atari (the 2600) but it didn't last very long... I wonder if my grandmother still has it somewhere...that would be interesting. I could bring my XBOX, you know  ;D

But anyway, it all depends on what I'm doing this summer; If I have a job and they can't let me have a week-long break, then I guess I won't go. Otherwise, I would have made enough money with that summer job so that I can go....!

This website (http://www.cheapflights.com/flights/New-York-City-NYC/index.html) might be useful for those of you inside the states, there are much cheaper flights here than anywhere else I've encountered. Check airports in cities around you that you would be willing to drive to instead of the closest airport and you might find a better price. You must be 21 (or know someone 21) to use the service, and you must book the flight at least two weeks in advance. To the dismay of all, I cannot attend.

EDIT: I think I should also add that anyone considering taking a bus trip that will last for more than a day is out of his/her mind. Don't do it. Trust me.

Damn your father and his 18 and above rule.. I might've gone and graced *cough* you all with my presence...

Bah.. Who am I kidding. It has to be in a 50 mile radius for me to attend.. lol.. By the time there's another American Mittens, I'll be old enough to go..

But.. I gues.. This June.. If anyone wants to see ol' LGM they can all come down to Blieskastel in Saarland, Germany and we can have a pint.. :-p

Finally, I'm pretty sure that I can go. I have enough money and 23rd of July sounds good (I can get some extra money by working on June).

Now it's time to ask if any other Finns are going ( Pessi ;) ) I could travel alone... but I'd rather not. Also, the flight from Finland would go to NYC and I remember Dave saying he could probably pick us up on the NYC airport. So, awesome.

I hope to go but am not too sure just yet. I won't be able to afford the flights AGA will be taking but I hope to go via aircourier.co.uk for £250. It'll mean I may be on a different flight and will have to take a letter on board with me, but it also gets to mean my surname will be on someones board at New York.

Not sure when to PM you tho eric. I mean, I can PM and say, I MIGHT BE COMING! But thats about it. Once i've sorted this out I shall let ye know.

PS, AGA + UKers - what day would we get a flight? Thursday or Friday? And what day would we get a flight back?

EDIT: Screw the courier thing, I'll probably go via something like cheapflights.co.uk. Although they're not listing the Mittens dates just yet I'll probably get a last minute flight thing, which should be around £250 still and should also be fairly easy to get - what with everyone being scared of terrorism and all. :)

This is the cheapest flight I've found, after quite a lot of searching. Apart from last-minute deals, that's probably as cheap as it's gonna get.

About when to fly, I thought quite early on the 23rd from London, which would let us arrive in NY at around mid-day. Then leave New York in the evening on the 30th, at something like 8, which puts us back in London  in the morning on the 31st. That sound good to everyone?

I'll PM you any day, Eric. I usually charge 100$ for my autograph, but I guess your hosting me will sort of make up for it.

Thanks eric for being the host this year; and m0ds, you are coming, mittens wouldn't be mittens without its founder :P

I love the whole waiver thing by the way - gives it a very authentic American feel  :D

Any Ontario types interested in going?  By air, the cheapest flight I've found is $278, Round-trip Economy Class from Air Canada.

By land, Greyhound costs $229.50 round trip.  But if two people go together, it only costs $259.50 for both of them.

Hi folks,

In case you didn't see the other thread.Ã,  I need to know who will need a ride from NYC to Mittens.Ã,  So far I only have three of you confirmed (AGA, CJ and Dark Stalky).

Drop me a PM and let me know.Ã,

Ok, not to be lame or nuffin, because I can read instructions, but my cookies are never working and I never stay logged in, and I'm not sure anyone gets my PMs, so, Mr. Colossal I'm down for the Mittenification. Also, I hear there's going to be an Atari, I could bring an Gamecube, PS2, and an Xbox that has an Atari, NES, SNES, and a GBA emu and a few hundred roms... or Atari. It's up to you guys. Anyhow, PM me what I needs to know (or IM me on AIM: ohehness, or email me: davis@pmind.com). I'll be flying in to Jersey and then driving up with Phil Reed, so we'll need two release forms please, and a coke. Um, yeah, super size it.

edit---
And I'm trying to get up with Evanwolf too, but not sure if my PMs are going thru.

no your PMs are not getting through

personally i wouldn't want more than an atari there but that's just me, i guess a week is a long time and if you want to bring something no worries, but Ataris rock hard and the pixels cut you when you play... They cut you!

but whateva' no worries, glad you can come

how the whole forms thing is going to be handled is they will be there when you get there, i'm not going to mail them out cause there's no point, all it says is "if you get hurt it's not the Feurstein's fault, you did it yourself, f00!"

Is anybody bringing a laptop (or PC)? You need to have a show-and-tell about your upcomming games.
I could bring my laptop, but with the batteries bone-dry after 1 hour and no euro-sockets to re-charge, it would be useless.

There are a confirmed eleven laptops being brought to Mittens, bringing us to a total of $18,000 of burglariffic merchandise!

how is the tent-situation?
Will far away guests like yours truly be guaranteed a place indoors?

I have this plan that I will travel with only hand-bagage, to save as much time as possible for Dave's van crew.
Bringing a tent will not fit that plan nicely.

I've only worked for 2 weeks at this new job I got for the summer, but they have been very pleased with the progress I've made so far. So, today I asked if I could take a week off by the end of July to attend this "International Gathering" in NY, and they said that it would be no problem and they could acomodate it.

So, I guess I'm going to Mittens 2K4EB! I'll be leaving on saturday, and I'll probably arrive at the Albany airport, since I'll probably work that extra day on Friday.

I haven't bought the tickets yet, but I'll update this post when I do :)

I live less than two hours away, so I plan to stick my head in for a little while and meet some of the great people around here, but I'm curious as to who is coming.

BTW people, The Great Sacandaga Lake and surrounding area is one of the more beautiful parts of New York State, and more representative of what Upstate New York is like, for those who think NY is like the city.

More Questions:

1. What will the weather be like? Will I be allright with a couple of sheets? I plan to omit my sleeping bag, since I want to travel only with a small ruck-sack (which will count as hand luggage). This will save me precious time when the rest of the van-crew is waiting for me.
I usually travel extremely lightly, even on longer trips, just to save time at the luggage retrieval.

2. Will there be a guitar?

3. Will we go to Albany (or some other hip place) and visit some club? Should I bring a fancy shirt and a shaving device?

How much is a cinema ticket? Is there a cinema nearby? Would it be possible to see I, Robot? Because it doesn't come out in the UK until August 6th!!

I presume the majority of us are staying in tents? Who is bringing tents?

Will we then need to pack a sleeping-bag?

I'll probably take a relavitley large bag just for clothes and my rucksack. Me sleeping back would fit so that's not a problem.

Andail appears to be bringing one pair of underpants :D
Title: Re: Mittens 2004: Electric Boogaloo
Post by: MrColossal on Mon 19/07/2004 01:49:41
No, the majority of you will be sleeping in beds, there's enough room with doubling up, for 10 people to sleep in beds

then there's room on the floor, we have a tent so no worries, there is a drive in nearby and if you want to bring a sleeping bag then go ahead, but there will be enough blankets

sometimes it gets chilly so pack a pair of pants and a warm shirt or something

I was going to bring a laptop.. I was preparing it and all with all the goodies and whatnot, but then a piece of it blew up (seriously, it was like someone stuck a m-80 (a type of firework for you foreigners) inside and lit it) and now it runs but only if you hook it up to a monitor since part of the piece that broke gave power to the LCD screen. The thing, though, is that I had fixed so that it was running beautifully... better than it ever did. The laptop is my friend's, and he's going to buy a new part but it's not going to come in time for me to fix it and take it with me (which I wasn't counting on doing anyway).

If you want a simpler explanation to my paragraph above, the computer is a Compaq, pre-HP-owed days. :P

Still, I am bringing a few goodies on CD, so I sure hope someone is brining a laptop so I can show some of my stuff....! Somebody better bring a laptop or something because I bet you really want to see some of this top secret netmonkey stuff.  ;)

I can bring a s-video to video (your regular RCA yellow end cable) adapter, though!

Cats are cool.

3-4 days left, guys! OMGROFLMAO!!! (well, 4 for me. I'm in on saturday)

well, i know i wont be able to bring a laptop. bummer. and now i may not be able to come. probably will though, its looking like i wont get the job with ea games for the fall, but if i did, they would want me to start on monday... but with how much ive been looking forward to this, i would probably drive up from maryland just to see you all for two days. itd be worth it.. lotta gas though.  i was thinking i would leave between about 6-8 am tomorrow morning, and its an 8 hour drive... hmm, maybe ill see about leaving earlier.

If I had the choice between working at EA or drinking my own piss for the rest of my life, I would drink my piss.

By the way, I thought only market analists and monkeys could work at EA.
Boring monkeys whos spirits are broken, because otherwise they might think up something original.

looks like ill have to wait till sunday to leave, im sorry you probably wont get this... so maybe ill just make a surprise visit on sunday.

btw, i would be just running tournaments at colleges in maryland, so it wouldn't really matter that its ea games, not that i have anything against ea. Im actually very excited to start this job. its much much better than working at my resturant another year

Early status report of Mittens:

I had a problem waking up this morning (actually, I was dreaming about being in Mittens when I realized that something was not right in the dream), and my driver thought I was leaving in the P.M. instead of A.M. so I ended up missing my flight. Since it was a minor airport, they booked me for Monday (missing 2 days!  :'(), and that's when I' m going.

I called the Mittens site to let them know what happened, and I asked for a status report. It looks like everyone got there at 5 AM due to delayed flights and distances between the airport and the camp site. Looks like Mittens started on a big sleep-a-thon!

Most of the people there are Europeans... man, we worked so hard to bring the event to this continent, and no American is going. Come on, guys! show your support...  :-\

I'm going back to sleep.. maybe I' ll magically wake up on monday and go to mittens

Well, I'm American and I hope to be at Mittens later on.  I took ill earlier this week, and it seems to have gotten full blown, and now settling down.  I hope to at least make it for a few days.

I am in the US right now, but unfortunately it is a family trip. I tried to get them out of the way yesterday, when I was just 170 KM away from Broadalbin, but a combination of bad weather and uncomfortable situation made my hopes an impossibility. So have fun all. See you some other time.

Back too... well, I was back about 4 hours ago. But I'm physically tired.

My room smells like I just moved in! It's weird. I'm sure we'll post details about mittens tomorrow when at least the Americans are back in their homes. The Euros might be sleeping all day tomorrow, since they'll have some crazy jet lag. But who knows, maybe they're hardcore!
