All of those look good, the Irish one is cheapest it seems! Ha. But yeah that's only 20 people. Is there anything similar Atlantic side?

Regarding Ireland:

One handy thing about Rosslare is that the Europort there has connections to both Wales and France (for people coming from the UK and/or Europe), and a direct train to Dublin.

Wexford itself is a pretty interesting place for Mittens-esque exploration and excursions, though, as can be seen here (http://www.wexfordweb.com/).

Not sure how pricey it will be, but this is basically the type of house we've been renting the past few years.

Low cost is good cost! No real preferences for location here, but isn't Ireland kind of self destructing at the moment? :P
Though the house in Ireland might be cheap, what's other stuff there likely to cost? Dosen't it have a crazy high cost of living?

I see the self-destructing aspect as a good thing. Somewhere you can stop any random passer-by on the street and say "Hey, I'll give you fifty bucks for your kidney."

So I say Ireland, Iceland or Greece for this year.

Which is to say: Sure, sounds good.

Yeah, we're like an smelly old tramp lying at the mouth of a dank alley, surrounded by paramedics taking turns to jelly up the defibrillator pads. \o/

Seriously, though, the cost of living has pretty much plateaued.  Everyday prices are reasonable, we just have less ammunition for our money fights.

LOL Snarky. I think not to rain on anyone's parade, but since the two countries share a similar economic bloom, at least based on what I see here in Greece, going to Ireland will prove very not worthwhile. Of course it depends, but the prices have skyrocketed here in Greece after the Troica's embark, and I'm assuming the same is about to happen in Ireland as well.

My vote would go for Ireland.

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Europe this summer and it would be awesome to connect it to Mittens. We are planning on starting in Scotland so if Mittens was in Ireland that connection would be easier for us (selfish).

Holland would be awesome too, but I vote for Ireland!

Though similarly screwed, our economic rescue plans have less to do with taxation or price increases, and more to do with slashing public spending and welfare. Prices on things like petrol, tobacco, and alcohol, have remained largely unaffected, and the cost of an average weekly shop (of essentials) is more or less in line with general inflation.

Ireland isn't the cheapest country in general, though, but I wouldn't worry about it affecting visitors. There's still plenty of opportunities to save money.

I'm obligated to come if it's going to be at the place of that second URL, that's like 10 minutes driving from where I live ;D

I don't know if that's going to make Ireland a more interesting choice. ;)

I'm considering attending my first mittens this year :D

My vote (if I have one) goes to Holland. Cause it would be my second trip outside Scandinavia I would selfishly prefer a place that's further to the south. But Ireland sounds fun too, so consider this a half-maybe-vote.

Well I've always said I wanted to give this mittens thing a go, and with the possibility of it to be in Ireland this year then it would be the most affordable option for myself. So I vote for Ireland.

Right, so if it is Ireland, the next step is to decide where in Ireland.

Disco posted this at the start of the thread - http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/rosslare-strand/124894 - and I vote for this exact place, for the same reasons I highlighted in my response to Disco.

Looking at their booking website (http://selfcatering.travel/14926,walshes-lough/light.htm), we could get 10 days in the middle of June (13-23) for 2857 magic euro beans, or 143 beans per head. That seems to be the largest chunk of days we could bag in the JUN/JUL season.

If somebody wants to take a stab at handling the booking transaction, seeing as I couldn't organize a piss-up in a brewery, then we would be well on our way to being sorted.

Or we could keep looking.

I am tentatively raising my hand for the hosting responsibility this year, pending my lovely tax rebate, the next couple paycheques, and perhaps an early Mittener deposit or two. Ten days would be amazing for that price as long as we can organise it to include two weekends so everyone's employers won't go berserk. That time period LimpyFish mentioned is over my birthday as well :D

What say ye people? is 10 days too much to be around each other?

Alternatively, we could go for 9 days/8 nights from August 20-28 for â,¬2286. I have â,¬4.19 on me left from my recent Alps adventure so that makes it â,¬2281-something.

Ireland is fine for me, but I'm not sure about this special house. It seems to be in a peaceful neighbourhood and I'd prefer a rather remote place like the villa where we can make noise without beeing shouted at. 10 days is a lot but it depends on the days i.e. if two weekends are included.

When you're talking about twenty or so people and making it remote, you start to enter castle-type territory.

Or places like...

http://www.holidayhomesdirect.ie/12270/

...which might work, but is also almost twice the cost.

The good thing about the Rosslare site is that it's a direct link to both the UK and Europe; as far as I can tell, people who wanted to bring a car could just drive onto a ferry at Fishguard or Cherbourg, and get off at the Europort with just a relatively short drive to the house.

As for days, the best weekend-inclusive deal, would be the 17th to the 23rd - basically a Thursday to Thursday week costing 2000 euro - since other weekends seems to be booked in the Jun/Jul season.

There is a big-ass castle in Scotland that is going for £4595 for 22 people / £208 a head for the week:

Castle anyone?

The currency may still be pounds...but they have their own notes so it is kind of like going abroad for the UK peoples.

All of those would be good if we get a full compliment of Mitteneers, but I'm going to stick with my original estimation that you hit the nail on the head with the original Rosslare site.

Connemara, though, where Clifden is, is on the opposite side of the country to where I would expect most attendees will be landing/disembarking, which means extra rail/car journeys. We'd also be a little cut-off from civilization.

If a week is what we've decided on, that means the Rosslare site works out at 100 euro each (or about £80) for 20 people (we could probably squeeze a extra couple of people in if needs be), which seems like good value.

As it stands, I'm putting my vote on it.

EDIT: Having just looked again at their booking site, it seems that July is spoken for (with August filling up). My original idea for Jun 17th-23rd still seems to be available, but I wouldn't put money on it being open for long. :(

20 people seems like a reasonable target, last year we had 17 in Italy so I'd expect about the same again this year as it's still in Europe.

As for length, personally I think 7 days is about right; we might start to get bored if we did 10 days. People can always stay longer if they want (eg. I'd be up for spending a couple of nights in Dublin before/after mittens).

I'm definitely interested (still bummed about Mittens/Wintermeet last year (and my lack of attendance))!

No dates are better/worse for me I just need to know them before I can say 100%.  My brother and I (and another pal) are doing a boy's week in Europe followed by another week with our special-lady-friends and it's lookin' September/October timeline so they shouldn't conflict!
Title: Re: Mittens 2011 Discussion
Post by: Disco on Sun 13/02/2011 19:23:53
Ah I had not realised we were so few in Italy :P 20 seems fine then. Well if we do Rosslare it appears we have two options. July is out, so within normal Mittens parameters the best options we are left with are June 17-24 and August 19-26, both are Friday to Friday.

I am not too fussed either way but I am biased toward the August timeframe. I have vague plans to do an around the world trip beginning (with Mittens) around this time, so that leaves me an extra 2 months to fundraise.

Which of these dates works best everyone, June or August?

I'll offer my services, if need be, on arriving early and making sure the place is stocked with food/booze/drugs/toilet paper/etc before everybody arrives, since I'm, y'know, in the country and all.

I wouldn't trust me with monetary duties, though. I have a tendency to blindly sign for things and not check receipts.

Also I'd spend it all on blow.

Yep, I am fine taking care of the reservation/depost this year. Not sure about our transport logistics will be like, but I just checked the rail fares from Dublin and it is about â,¬20 to Rosslare return and takes about 2:45, and it goes along the coast most of the way

UPDATE: The property is available for that week. Booking requires â,¬250 of the â,¬1000 security deposit (which I am taking care of), with the remainder due on June 10. The â,¬2000 rent is also due on this day.

I just got the booking email and am completing the process now.

There was one line that stood out as a bit odd to me, but I suppose for their protection:

"Please reply with an email with all the names of the guests that will be staying along with their home address."

I don't believe we've ever had to do this before, but it should just be for security deposit reasons. I would assume it can be sent in with the remaining deposit by June 10, but if anyone wants to PM their address I can start crafting that.

UPDATE: Property is book'd :D

The place looks great!

The dates worry me (only slightly) but I should still be able to manage this!  My two trips over-seas would be only about 1 month apart.  While this is just fine by me, I'm not sure how those that sign my paychecks will feel about it!  I will find out.

Keep me on as a [almost certain] definite though!

Nice one Ken, are you able to give us a summary of payments - how much we owe you now as a deposit, the total cost and what we'll need for security? That'd be great :)

What are people doing for travel? The cheapest option from UK I could find is Bristol - Dublin by plane (£60 return) and the train Dublin - Rosslare (20 euro return). That's very reasonable. How do other people plan to get there and from where to where?

Any plans on car rental? I can see there being some minor problems with this. For example, if a couple of people take their car from the UK - Ireland, the ferry cost is high (300 pounds). A people carrier from the UK would require a drive through Wales, with a ferry cost in excess of £600. Rental from Rosslare itself doesn't have any people carrier/mini-busses available, so it'd have to be rented from further out of town, ie Dublin, Wexford etc. A 4 seater rental car is about £250 from Rosslare. I'm sure most have the money for it but I just wanted to point out a car rental/road trip is going to be a lot more expensive than plane & train. Thankfully the train connections to other parts of Ireland from Rosslare seem to be brilliant.

Personally plane and train tickle my fancy, as Ken says, it's a waterfront rail ride and looking at some of the photos it looks amazing :D But it'd be good to get an idea of other people's plans, in case there is a group booking or anything.

Edit: Oh Ken is it possible for you to talk to the owners/rental people and mention that broadband/internet connectivety is a BIG deal for us, and could they please make sure it's working and stable. After the bum deal we got with it in Italy the last thing I'm sure any of us want to do is have to stand next to a goddamn crapper to use the internet. If they know it's going to be a crap connection, can they let you know, perhaps.

The total cost of the rental is â,¬2000. Based on 20 attendees, I will require a total of â,¬100 from each (that was easy :P). The money needs to be sent by June 10. So please make plans send it to my paypal sometime within the next 113 days.

The terms I was sent mentioned nothing about VAT or cleaning fee. The only extra possible fee would be having our rubbish taken care of at a local shop:

QuoteWhen you leave the property you must bring any rubbish with you such as bottles, cans, paper plates etc. You can leave them in the local shop Londis, they charge five euro per bag.

I am taking care of the deposit on my lonesome. No one need worry about that, unless of course they break something more substantial than a glass or plate. In that case they can look forward to a good ol' country boy ass whoopin'  8)

My own travel plans are to fly London > Dublin and get the train down. There are three trains daily, I plan on getting the afternoon train for ~16:00 arrival, the earliest we can check in:

QuotePossession of your rental property should be taken between 16.00hrs and 19.00hrs and the property vacated before 11.00 hrs on the morning of departure.

I have been assured that the supermarket is a 3 minute walk, so we should be fine collecting our food the same way ants do.

I'm not sure if there are many opportunities for day trips like we had in Italy. Perhaps we should plan for an extended trip somewhere before or after? Mittens ends on the Friday that the August bank holiday begins, so some of us will be able to take advantage of that I imagine.

I will inquire about the internet. Site says "wi-fi available" but as we know that isn't 100% reassuring.

I'm a definite and my boyfriend a maybe.

I'll most likely fly to Dublin and taking the train for the journey down sounds good to me. I'd be interested in staying in Dublin Friday-Sunday after Mittens, could be fun if more people want to do that.

Renting cars would be neat for day trips, but I'm not sure if it is worth it. If we want to go to Wexford or other places, it might be even cheaper to go by taxi than renting a car for the whole week. I'll try to find out if there are busses that might get us to some interesting places, too. Disco, can you give me the link to the railway company?

Edit: We could even consider renting a car just for one day if we want to go somewhere special.

The train station is right around the corner to the house. I suggest we use that for daytrips. Wexford is 18 minutes north and the next stop Enniscorthy is 39 minutes. Not too bad and no parking hassle like we had in Sienna.

List (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=42539.msg564380#msg564380) is updated now. We currently have 26 names. I don't mind subverting authority and having a couple extra on the spare couches or floor, but I have instituted a similar policy on non-AGSer significant others:

I am putting all +1 type people in "possibles" pending available space. Please understand when I place AGSers and perennial Mitteners at the front of the queue.

We have had the same guidline in the past, though I don't think it has been an issue before as we have a few dropouts usually, but space is more limited this time so please understand.

Those ferries do seem to be bizarrely expensive! If we had 4 people in a car driving over from the UK, would that ferry crossing be cheaper than flights for everyone plus car rental in Ireland? If the train connections are good then maybe as cat says we don't actually need cars.

CJ, car options appear to all be more expensive than flights & train by the looks of it. The best option would be to rent out there and not take any car on a ferry. A ryanair return flight is currently about 60 pound in total. 4 people sharing a car would pay about £100 each for a return ferry UK - Ireland.

For the record, I'm also interesting in staying in Dublin on Friday/Saturday night after Mittens.

Also, given how close the town is from the house, I don't think we'll need cars.  The train seems like a viable option to get around, and that way we avoid the problem of who goes in what car or how many people fit or don't fit.

Hostels in Dublin (http://www.hostelbookers.com/results/loc/dd/dst/1613/arr/2011-08-26/ngt/2/?) appear to come more highly rated than most other cities I have checked into, nice :D

My picks would be #2 and #3 (currently The Times and Four Courts) from that list view. We can book a 10 or even 12 bed dorm ensuite for two nights at â,¬36-40 each grand total. I will start a separate list for post-Mittens Dublining in the first post.

Re: Hostels,

Last time I was in Dublin, my friends and I stayed at Avalon House, which is on that list.  It's in a pretty good location, right around the corner from Dublin castle, and walking distance from Temple Bar and a bunch of other places.  Plus, you can rent rooms that fit a lot of people, and the place is clean and well-maintained.

But of course, anything nicer is welcome.

UK People - or anyone traveling through the UK too, I guess!

http://www.sailrail.co.uk/

We can get a rail/sail deal traveling by train and ferry to Ireland for £64 return. This'd avoid us airport annoyances, and be a fun trip and let us see stuffs. Also, we can get the ferry from Fishguard in wales right to Rosslare, where our mittens house is, and get the ferry back from Dublin at the end of the post mittens adventure - it's the same price for the deal no matter which place we go from, or where in the UK we go to.
This sounded pretty awesome and well suited to us to me. What does everyone else think?

Wow that does sound like a good and interesting deal. From Paddington it looks like about 4-5 hours though. I would probably only go for that if I had some company along the way, but if the UK contingent meet up in Fishguard it could be a fun way to get there.

I would be up for it depending on what others coming from the UK are interested in doing. I don't see any times on that site though, just train times from the National Rail site :S

Sounds great Creed. Excellent find. The ferry to Rosslaire would be awesome. And that price is very good, too. That said, the train journey from Dublin would've been scenic and nice, but yes, rail and sail means get up off my sofa, walk out the door, sit on a seat and arrive in Ireland. So I'm much more up for that than ryanair queues and airports :D

In theory Ken, majority of people would be best off joining the Paddington line if they fly into London from abroard, I assume a lot will choose to fly directly into Ireland, but I can certainly get the same train as you. The sailrail website is a little inconclusive without calling them but it appears it'll still stop at some of the stations along the same route, and pass tier, aga & myself. And CJ will most likely be able to get that same train too.

I think we need to figure out what times the crossings are. Working backward from a 4-5pm arrival in Rosslare, it looks like we would have to leave Paddington for Fishguard by 9am while those living further down the First Great Western get to sleep in. Can one of the UKers give them a call? I nominate Mark :P

The RailSail deal from Stena Line (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/rail-and-sail/) takes a bit longer than I anticipated. The train leaves Paddington at 8:45 (Reading 9:11, Bristol Parkway 10:07, Cardiff Central 10:54), arrives at Fishguard Harbour at at 13:15, departs the harbour at 14:30, arrives in Rosslare at 18:00.

A single is £33 before Bristol, where it becomes £30.

With this in mind I am likely to fly/train instead, will be flying out of Dublin anyways, might as well make it a return. Also, I will be spending a week on a tallship in early September, and I will be crewing/running that ship, so while the price is nice the experience may not compare  8)

Mm, if I were to go to Dublin afterwards, I probably wouldn't use sailrail, simply cos there doesn't seem much point going to Dublin and then back to Rosslare to get a ferry. But oh, you mention it's possible to do it one way which is good.

Ken, sorry dude, I have no way to call any companies. Will PM you in a bit need to ask you something.

PS I noticed all website ads are now geared towards me renting cars in Dublin or using a ferry to cross from the UK. Goddamn internet!

Seriously though, this year really isn't the year for couples (that haven't been before), we're already going to be pushing the limit with usual AGSers.

If the numbers stay as they are, some people are going to be sleeping in bags anyway so a handful more probably wouldn't hurt.

Having said that, a provisional cap on the proceedings might be in order before we hit thirty or more. :-\
Title: Re: Mittens 2011 - UPDATE: WE HAVE A PLACE TO SLEEP

Sure, but you know, might want to be careful. Adding more people than you say you've got is do-able on a campsite, but someone's private property?

For starters we have to give them our names and addresses, of everyone attending, what are they going to say when they receive 30 but only allow 20 people to stay?

And this is the IRISH. They're not like foreigners we can easily fob off. They're going to be pissed off if they find out we're housing more people than we said.

And what's more is that something like that will be falling on poor Ken's shoulders. And that ain't fair.

Usually these places will give or take 2 or 3 people, esp. if they have sofa beds, but definitely not 10. It'd be worth seeing if they might compromise with 24, or 22 people instead of 20. But I don't think just turning up assuming we can fit in various people they haven't been notified about is going to work.

Provisional cap is 20 I'm afraid. It would be difficult to explain to the owners that there are ten extra people not on our list who are "just visiting for the day" but who all have sleeping bags :P

Remember, the owner is asking for a list of names and addresses for all attendees, and due to contractual limitations there can only be 20 names on it. I have already said that plus ones are only pending available space behind usual Mitteners and AGSers.

Hey I'm not telling anyone they aren't allowed to come here. That isn't fair to frame my or anyone else's posts like that. I have PMed tzachs about the "possibles" issue (he mentioned being a possible on page 3 of this thread) and prefer to keep that in the PMs.

There is a huge difference between being on a waitlist (we are already at 20) and being told you aren't allowed. No one is saying that.

The 20 in probables isn't even a set thing, we don't have anyone even on a waiting list yet. I will be accepting payments once I have the deposit money together, which will be this Friday the 18th.

@noavana: I do acknowledge you as an AGS member now since you have been registered and posting, so taking you on ahead of non-AGS people. As I have stated will happen in the first post of thread it goes Mitteners > AGSers > then non AGS people (we only have two on the list and I haven't heard anything recently about them). We have done similar things in the past when it was looking too crowded for available space, although it has never ended up being a problem with dropouts.

You did see the subsequents posts after your initial post though right? You yourself responded knowing that there were already 26 names on the list before you declared interest, and I can only accept 20. It should not be "uncool" that with 27 AGSers out of 29 people interested I personally can't guarantee anyone a spot until payments are made.

Perhaps we've been a bit too hasty in securing a place and not considering somewhere a touch bigger.

The whole name & addresses thing kinda made it obvious first come first serve really would be enforced this year and that people can't just do a dutchmarco (turn up undeclared) ;)

Fact is, for the last 5 or 6 years there's generally been 20 definite people straight off so we'd usually try and get somewhere for 30, but this time, it sadly hasn't been possible. There are campsites and hotels nearby as a last resort and not forgetting the no-holds-barred trip to Dublin post mittens.

There are so far 14 interested in the weekend in Dublin. At this point we can book either one large room for those currently listed and have the couples in privates or we can do two rooms of 8 or so. I have not gone through the entire list, but have only seen 10-bed dorms available to book out entirely. We will likely just be sleeping there so no worries about splitting into two groups.

I just paid using Paypal, so you can move me to the attendees section.

Also, I suggest you edit the very first post :
- by striking through the obsolete information (such as "I wonder where it will take place? Maybe Italy?")
- by adding new relevant information (such as "IT HAS BEEN DECIDED IT'S IN DUBLIN FROM XXX TO XXX"
- by copy-pasting your post about Paypal.

Looking forward to Mittens...
Also, I want to mention I won't be there 19-20-21. Only 22-22-23-24-25-26.
Thanks!

The first post has already been modified to reflect the relevant information, and I left most of the previous (now obsolete) information there for historical purposes :D

Alright folks, that leaves just one spot left! Who will it be? :o

Yes I'll attend it but I don't need any accomodation :)
I hope you nerds like dancing all night and picking up gorgeous Polish girls, because there will be no room for discussions on pixels or for Guybrush-style catchphrases in the Café en Seine ;D

All I meant is that I suggest you strike the obsolete information through. (tags [ s ] and [ /s ]). that still allows to read, but that prevents the obsolete information from catching the eye.

Now let's get this Dublin weekend sorted.

With 13 people so far interested in communal facilities, perhaps we should get two rooms for 8 (I imagine a few others haven't yet spoken up) and try and get the same or near-ish hostel. I shall search around now for availability and post later.

I've been concentrating on the wrong BJ's, obviously.

The teaser Trailer (http://www.screen7.co.uk/film/phat/download/bbjordan.wmv)

Layafoo - it's taken sweet time because there's a lot more to this one than meets the eye. Lots of new twists and turns in terms of production & post. Because I've decided to pack in film making for a while and concentrate on games, this is quite a 'big' one. I owe a movie to my close friends at home as much as I do the AGS community - which is why a second movie is essentially intertwined into the BJ world (see my avatar). Woot!

When I was young and naive, I was in some sort of similar event, and I needed some sellotape, so I asked everybody if they had sellotape. Except for my bad English, everything went fine: You have to know that, in French, we say "scotch" for "sellotape". So I found myself asking everybody if they had scotch. At 8am in the morning. I knew only later that everybody in the gathering thought I was a drunkard for the following week.

Alright, I found and contacted the hostel that best fits our situation. Isaac's Hostel (http://www.isaacs.ie/isaacs_hostel/Home.aspx) has a 16-bed dorm and is located 350 meters from Connolly Station. We currently have 15 people for shared and 2 for private, but I suspect maybe a few more people may join so going for the 16-bed.

The room is â,¬480 for the whole weekend, so will be â,¬32 each if we have 15 or â,¬30 with 16.

A twin bed private room is â,¬140 total for the weekend.

I can go ahead and book this tomorrow unless there are any objections?

Title: Re: Mittens 2011 - UPDATE: Looking at Dublin Hostels, candidate found
Post by: Disco on Sat 30/04/2011 23:25:21
Not yet unfortunately. I asked about booking all the beds at once to avoid making two bookings of 8 (the amount they normally limit per reservation). If I were to book 16 at once, they would class it as a "group" booking, which has its own set of terms and hassle.

Instead of the normal 10% reservation, they want the FULL first night paid up front, and the rest 6 weeks prior. They also want a "code of conduct" signed by a group leader and a â,¬300 damage deposit.

None of this is necessary for 8 or under, so I am looking for one more person to make a reservation with me for these dates. It is only â,¬24 to reserve 8 beds in a 16-bed dorm, with a remainder of â,¬216 due on arrival.

Anyone willing to take up the other please get in touch by email or PM.

EDIT: On second thought, I should not make the booking myself right now since my name is legally changing on May 23. I can either do afterwards or have someone else do it in my place.

I've already discovered a bus (http://wexfordbus.com/timetables/wexford-dublin-airport/), which brings me to Wexford at around 22:00 pm, but then I'm stuck.

I don't know if anyone will have a car, but you might consider going to Rosslaire by taxi from there.

I used this site http://taxiregulation.nationaltransport.ie/for-users/tax-fare-calculator/ (http://taxiregulation.nationaltransport.ie/for-users/tax-fare-calculator/) and it says â,¬20.20 to â,¬28.60. â,¬23.60 to â,¬31.80 at night

This is also good to know if we want to go to Wexford during the week.

I will bring my portable wave/mp3 recorder, it has a built in stereo microphone and records up to 24-bit/96 kHz .wav and 64-320 kbps .mp3

This will be good, a bit like Chrille's one? What are the recording levels like? My mini-disk recorder was rubbish, you couldn't set the recording level higher than 5 max, yet it really needed to go up to 20 to over power the recording volume and find somewhere acceptable in between.

I ask because dubbing for the movie is going to be absolutely essential at Mittens, and if someone is bringing a half decent laptop with CD drive that I can install Premiere on, and a decent audio recording device, I will get it finished there and then. It will still be watchable even if I can't do a little bit of late night editing there but some scenes really need new dialogue audio and the right people are going to be at the event :) I'm aiming to lock the visuals by Mittens, finish audio and give you guys the premiere at Mittens, then take it to the local cinema and internet release by the end of September.

My recorder is this: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1077

It records directly to SD. The screen shows recording levels and there is an LED peak indicator so you can quickly find the right setting.

On the back there are switches for mic gain between high and low sensitivity, and a low-cut switch that makes the recorder ignore low frequency sounds like wind, breath, and machine hum.

It should work fine for doing BFJ dubs!

August 26 - 28 (although some of us are staying for the Bank Holiday as well, to be booked separately). I've been told I can't reserve all 16 beds at once without having to jump through some silly hoops, but can do 8 at a time without them. We should perhaps have two different people book 8 beds each.

I have asked a couple people personally to book 8 beds and have been turned down by all so far.

Also, my surname is changing in just under two weeks so would rather wait until my card changes to avoid any problems at check in. Either someone can book in my place or I can do it after May 23.

I know that at least 3 of us are staying an extra day after the Dublin weekend for the Bank Holiday. This got me thinking, why not book two rooms for the separate timeframes? I have not booked anything yet, so wish to know as soon as I can who else would be interested in staying over Sunday night.

Any UKers up for that? so far it would be splitting 11 to 3, but I imagine we could get that to about 4 if not 6. Anyone else interested in doing that?

No, like AGA said, everything that's worth being open will be open.

As we get closer to to August, and if nobody minds, I'll offer up an itinerary of fun things we can do in Dublin (just as a base to work from), such as the Guinness tour*, some groovy historical locales we can visit, maybe check out Dublin Zoo and the Phoenix Park (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Phoenix_Park), basic stuff like that.

The DART transit system pretty much runs from Dublin City out along the coastline of south Dublin, and there's some interesting stuff along the way.

I won't be staying for the Sunday night. I have to attend a wedding on the bank holiday back in the uk. Speaking of which, has everyone booked the flight from England? If so/not, what is the plan there?

I'm flying into Dublin (from Zurich) on Friday, 19. Aug at 10:35 (am), and leaving Monday, 29. Aug at 11:15. As far as I can tell, I'll have to get a bus to a train station, and then it's about three hours by train from Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Strand.

I'd have liked to try the SailRail option, but it just got too complicated in the end to fit in a visit to England as well.

Well I was going to organise it so that one room will be booked for two days and another for three, but I haven't got many responses to my post (Although I guess Snarky will be staying for three days now). Are you and Jen planning on staying for the Bank Holiday?

Also, I haven't had anyone step up and offer to book in concert with me, as their rules do not allow for more than 8 beds to be booked at a time. I am going to start making personal appeals to attendees to help with this.

I'll be arriving in Dublin at 10:30am on Friday the 19th (so I guess I'll be tagging along with you, Snarky) and leaving at 10:30am Sunday the 28, so I'll be along for the hostel Friday and Saturday nights.

Thanks Berian, but I did manage to find some help with that. I booked 8 beds in a 16 bed dorm earlier today, and another 8 are being booked tonight or tomorrow.

The first post is being updated periodically with arrival times under the Attendees list and with date and time of departure under the Dublin Weekend list.

Mittens is ten weeks from tomorrow!!!

Thanks for organising all this, Disco!

Me, AGA, Jake, Davy+Kim are currently planning on booking a ferry and driving across from the UK. We're all planning on doing the two nights in Dublin afterwards and going home on the Sunday.

AGA is not coming back with us on the ferry, so we'll have a spare place coming back to the UK if that's helpful for anyone?

Great, so you could get Abstauber and he doesn't have to sleep at the busstation (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=42539.msg577585#msg577585 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=42539.msg577585#msg577585))

Another thing: One car at Mittens won't help a lot for daytrips. But me and my boyfriend will rent a car after the Dublin weekend anyway. Would it be a good idea to rent the car for Mittens too? With two cars at least half the people can make a daytrip. So is anyone of the people arriving in Dublin about the same time as I do interested in going to Rosslare by car? Do we even need a second car?
Otherwise we will pick up our car in Dublin on Sunday noon to avoid parking trouble in Dublin.

Just checked the prices, the additional week + Dublin (without parking!) would be at least 300â,¬ more expensive so I guess I will take the train.

Oh, seems like I've missed a few steps... at least those about Dublin. So I suppose I'll get there by train too and I hope that buying a ticket once I'm there will be soon enough.

But since the hostel is booked, do I have a bed too or should I hurry and book one myself?

Also I'll arrive at 5:55p in Dublin, unfortunately not in Roslaire ;)

You are on the list for the dorm room so all you need to do is turn up with us :) The price per person is â,¬31 plus a refundable â,¬20 deposit for the weekend. They require damage deposits for any group of 8 or more.

Would the ferry company require passenger information when the ticket is booked and would it allow you to have different information for each way?  I may have to take you up on the offer!  When would you need to know by?

Post by: on Mon 04/07/2011 18:12:41
Thanks dudes. It's a hard decision to make.

I appreciate the PM too, Cat. Using your logic, the best I suggest is this:

I only want to go to Mittens to show you guys the new movie. I don't plan to visit anywhere or anything, it's just the prospect of showing that on the big screen they have there to you guys. I have no intention of going to Dublin. I can get over the lone traveling thing.

Regarding your suggestion - I guess the best way to do it is this: If everyone attending the Mittens pad were to pay an extra $10-15 to Ken, I'd be able to attend with a copy of the movie in final draft stages. Naturally I don't expect anyone to do that - some have already put in plenty of $$ to the movie already, and I'm sure other peoples finances are tight too. I owe money to about a third of the community as it is anyway :P

What bugs me though - because the only real premiere it will get would be by going to Mittens this year, otherwise it'll just be a web event. But like I said I can't just expect people to put in money to cover that/me. But yeah, I guess really the small extra amount should be considered as - do you want a ben jordan movie premiere or not, more than, do you want to help Mods get there ;) But then at least I'd be able to find the money to pay the rest. But money is money - a bitch.

It's a shame that it costs me more to get to Rosslare than it did to get to Italy. I had hoped certain things were going to pan out earlier this year, which would've helped me settle payments easily for this Mittens, but they never happened, and recently I've been wondering whether I want hot water or Mittens more.

Naturally I don't want the responsibility to fall on other peoples shoulders, which is why I've said I'll pull out. It's the easier option. So it's all about the movie, and a bit of love I suppose - cos I wouldn't be able to pay anyone back until I get rich  := If not, it's fine, I totally understand. Why pay for other people? But as it was suggested, I thought I'd ask.

Mods, I can cover your Mittens house cost if you'd like. I'm swimming in money, dog!

Well, paddling more like. Actually, it barely reaches my ankles, but - shit, I can spare a extra â,¬100.

Regardless, the offer is there if you want it. :)

Wow, now I'm even more excited. Sounds like we should make a piñata and fill it with peanut butter :D

Time for some logistics!

Among the Dublin entry (or residency) people, seven are arriving at Dublin airport between 10:05 and 11:05- Disco, Layabout, Grundislav, Snarky, Esseb, Cat, and Tier. Bicilotti arrives at nearly 13:00, so will miss the first train and will need the later 18:30 one. Abstauber will be bussing.

Once we all meet up, we will get a taxi to Connolly Rail Station. The fare estimate from the site Cat linked is between â,¬23.20 and â,¬31.00 for a group of 5-6. The average journey is 25 minutes.

We will meet up with Miez and LimpyFish (and perhaps monsieur_ouxx?) at the station. The midday train leaves at 13:30 and arrives in Rosslare Strand about 16:20. A return ticket is â,¬29.40 (web price, may be more at the office).

I'm waiting for an email about the actual location of the property, since the specific address I was given via email did not quite match the location on the website map. More logistics to come after the answer.

An update from us: Me and Noa booked the RailSail from London that Disco talked about some pages ago, meaning we'll arrive in Rosslare at 18:00 (and from there, probably a cab?).

It was hard for me to follow with all that was going on in this thread, and all the inside jokes and whatnot (though I'll be sure to bring some peanut butter with me just in case), but is there anybody else on that RailSail?

And also, btw, off course we'd have no problems to chip in in order to see the grandiose bj2 premiere.

It sounds like the ferry will be majority Mitteners! Indeed, there will be 8 of you on that crossing. Maybe that is enough to overthrow the captain and commandeer the ferry for our own use for the week? Something to think about.

Tier is not a mystery (at least as far as transportation to/from the house is concerned). He is only taking the ferry back to the UK. He is flying into Dublin on the 19th.

What is the plan for mobile numbers when over there? Especially with the planes and trains crew, since there is every chance someone will get lost.

I don't know! Me and Disco will probably meet at Gatwick airport since we are catching the same flight. Our flight goes to Terminal 2. It would be best to get some numbers so people are able to text each other to meet up.

But I think an executive decision should be made to meet at Jamison Bar in Terminal One. It's close to arrivals in Terminal 1 (where I guess most people will be arriving) and will probably be one of the only places with plenty of room to sit. :P

I assumed we would meet at Arrivals in the terminal of the latter arrivals, which is handy since they are scheduled at the same time and at Terminal 1.

Grundislav is scheduled to appear at Terminal 2, 5 minutes before Snarky and Esseb. Flightmapper does not specify in which terminal Snarky's flight from Zürich lands. Esseb's simultaneous flight from København will be Terminal 1.

My tendency is to be excited and meet people as they come out the door from luggage claim so that is what I will do.

Abstauber: Do you know how much is it (more or less) for a cab from Wexford to Rosslare?

I arrive in Dublin at 12:50, taking the bus from Dublin Airport to Wexford would  get me there (to Wexford) at 17:00.
That would be more or less 5 hours earlier than the dublin-connolly-rosslare path.

Or I could even ask some fellow mitteners for a lift :P

Why going to Rosslare by train, it's way faster (although it might be a bit more expensive)? As for the cab, I hope I'll catch the big blue one ;D

But  I have no clue what a real cab might cost.

Edit:
Oh, I just noticed you won't be able to catch the train at 13:30.. bummer.

Does anyone have a VGA to HDMI cable?

Apart from that I'd also really like to show and tell something, so I keep my fingers crossed that anyone brings a portable computer.

I'm bringing an android tablet that outputs 720p over HDMI.

So if anyone has...y'know...anything running in...um...android?

It could show images and videos of people's work, though. On a micro SD card...

I'll bring a MacBook, but it doesn't run AGS games very well (and I don't have the means to connect it to the TV). Assuming someone brings a Windows laptop, I'll see if I have some useful cables: I think I have a VGA to DVI and a DVI to HDMI, so I could potentially chain them together. It would be better if someone has a more direct solution, though.  :P

BTW, what kind of power sockets do they have in Ireland? The GB type?

@Snarky: I could bring a mini-DVI to VGA or mini-DVI to composite, if you have an "older" white model.

I could also provide a virtual machine (vmware) running Window7 32 bit.

I run Windows 7 in Parallels, but sound tends to stutter in AGS games.

I was able to dig up the cables I had in mind, but I can't chain them together because both the DVI ends are male. Unless someone has a computer with DVI or HDMI out, it won't work.

I will bring along audio cables, though. (Headphone jack to headphone jack and/or RCA red/white)

Keeping in mind they have that projector room, which hopefully means easy laptop connection... I will bring my S-Video lead to SCART. Will anyone's laptop support S-Video? At least with that I know I can get a TV hooked up. Really hoping the right leads and laptops are there to be able to show the movie!

Creed - maybe you can bring something along those lines for a super quiz prize? :) Question is, can anyone beat Francisco Gamezalez and win it!!!?

This netbook only has vga output. So if anyone can get the cable to correctly output to the tv from vga, then we are in business. I was tempted to bring along the beasty laptop, but decided against it.
Title: Re: Mittens 2011 - UPDATE: Some logistical information, Mittens in 1 week!
Post by: Snarky on Wed 17/08/2011 10:50:52
It depends on what inputs the TV supports, too. If you say it's a modern plasma screen, it should have HDMI or DVI in, maybe component, and SCART and coax, right? That should work. On older TVs it would probably be more complicated, with only SCART, composite and coax options.

Also, some TVs don't let you get sound input from a separate audio cable when they're in HDMI mode (and you don't get sound from video outputs on laptops, of course). Didn't we have that problem last year?

I have about five kilos of different video cables, but not exactly what we need. Maybe I can pick something up.

I am also home after the afor mentioned long drive.  Thanks very much to Chris for that!  I had a great week, it was nice to see plenty of new faces.  Now I just need to detox, although probably not as much as some others.  :=

A funny thing happened just as I was getting dropped off.  The song 'When will I see you again' by The Three Degrees came on the radio.  I believe that triggered my P.M.D.  However, I will counter that with some background drawing. Hooray!

Once again, thanks all for a lovely week. x

I am also home after that very long drive, and Davy & Kim have been sent on their way back to Sunderland!

It was great to see you all again and to welcome you newcomers; this year's house must be way up there in the coolness stakes for having its own bar -- shame we never could get the beer taps working!

I had a brilliant week -- see you all next year, at Mittens West Coast US!

Yeah, we missed you too, man. At least you made an appearance in video form, with Mods screening his two BJ movies. (Soon to be followed - from someone else - by... but I'll let others make that announcement.)

I'm home today as well, and along with PMD I'm suffering from NSF: No Shower Frustration, since the water went out in my apartment while I was gone. It was great seeing you all, and I hope those of you still knocking about in Ireland and other British isles have a good rest of your holidays!

As previously mentioned by Creed, we are home safe. Hamster is alive and well despite not being cuddled for nearly two weeks and none of the potted plants expired so we're doing well awesome here in Sunderland!

We're both stoked that everything has all turned out so well and between that and being more or less too tired to sleep we are both up on the computers instead of sacked out in bed where we probably ought to be since it is about one thirty am and we've been on a bus for seven hours. BUT WE ARE HARDCORE. XD

Speaking of... I mentioned it on Mark's facebook, but if nobody has been decided/voted/picked I'd like to volunteer to host next years' Mittens West Coast (though my idea of west coast would be somewhere up near Seattle).  Personally I was thinking more "middle america" like Colarado (so we could day-trip to the grand canyon, hoover-dam, pike's peak, etc).

Anyway... just throwin' that out there!  Welcome home Mitteneers!

If all goes well, I may actually be able to attend a Mittens on the West Coast. That would be stellar. I've been a member of this community for 8 years and have been kicking myself for every year that I've been unable to attend, so that would be really groovy. Lots of awesome places around California as well.

So only htis morning could I read his text saying "Hey I'm all pampered and ready, let's go have a drink" -- only a prelude to the lonely evening he spent  :=

Just arrived at home.  So very, very tired.

I'll go over my photos and post them (as well as my sappy mittens post-mortem) in the coming days, once I finish detoxing and settle back into my routine.

Also, don't worry too much, Matthieu.  I went and hung out at the Hairy Lemon for a bit, then drunkenly staggered about until I found a bar full of hip young people who were all from New York and wanted nothing to do with me.  Then I found a very nice Irish couple who talked to me about movies and politics for a while and invited me to come back and visit them in the future.  So all in all, not a bad final night in Dublin.

Bici - Salton Sea - hahaha! That'd be...awesome  :=

A week of no internet it's great to come back and see the photos. Great stuff, good times! And good to hear Francisco is back home finally..

And woot, finally my bad memories from Benidorm have been erased...!

May this picture haunt you fuckers for all eternity! :P

Also - this (http://www.sonores.de/mittens2011/Mittens_2011_in_Ireland.html#55) photo makes no sense, because I seem to have LimpingFish's bottle of Smirnoff Ice in my hand - yet I distinctly remember staying as far as hell away from that bottle as possible. Hmm. I do love a good alcohol induced Mittens mystery though...I must've been running an errand for Fish..

It used to be tradition to do a proper one on one about the people we met, so as I've had a week of no internet to think about it... Cisco - enjoyed your passion this time round, Mr "I'm going on holiday, not going to do anything else" man.. Bici - always a pleasure, your accent was stuck in my head many days after Mittens had ended. Fish - thank you for your generosity, and it was great to see you come out of your shell! dats, ders, dis... CJ - good to see you live it up as always, and your 'special' role... Miez - again thank you for helping me get to Mit 11, good of you to get in the hot tub, FINALLY!!1 Layabout - the same old drinking smoking shenanigans I expect of you - thanks for helping me feel I'm not the only major alcoholic Dirk - a man from AGS past, great to finally meet you in person - you're a dude! Cat - glad you came back, your interest in AGS is surprising - and if you need those questions answered, just let me know. AGA - well, you're always bloody there aren't you--good to see you buddy! Jake - no combine harvester that I recall, but always good to chat with you. Tzachs & Noa - the newest couple to befall Mittens, a pleasure to meet you both, you fit right in! Oux - you are French. That's about all I know of you, you were glued to your laptop all week! Davy & Kim - fast becoming Mittens 'default' couple, a pleasure as always - your kindliness is very reassuring...I'm just sorry it all culminated in er, that ketchup thing ;) Oh, and THAT game! Yes THAT one! MAKE IT!!! Gunnar - you OSD-sessed son of a gun-nar! Great to see you, you're a great bloke! With a large knife and a gag.. Cato - quiet you may be, but again you're such an AGS oldie, it's always great to see you there. Matt - always good to chat with you, and particularly impressed with your game...certain other comments also keep me chuckling. Comments involving writers.. and finally teh Ken - thanks for hosting, being suitably queer (with those white cards especially) and being a kindred spirit as always.

Peace Mitteneers!

NO HOMO

Hey! Not my fault! I was there only 3 days and the first thing I did when arriving was to make all my DLLs blow up. I then spent the next 2 days trying to fix my laptop  :'( :'( :'(  Lots of frustration I must say, that's also why I wasn't very social.

On the other hand I must confess I didn't really realize that Mittens was more of a "holidays that happen to be spent with AGS people" rather than a "AGS marathon". Now I know!  ;D

Haha but unlike Benidorm, m0ds, no lip contact happened there.  And as far as I know, there's no eyeball licking photos in existence, so we're safe for now.

Anyway, now that I've had a suitable night's sleep in my own bed and have had a day of work, I can unleash the sentimentality that's been building up ever since everyone left and I got to spend an extremely Post-Mittens Depressiony time in Dublin.

So, first and foremost: thank you.  Thank you to all the Mittens regulars, the recent regulars, and the newbies.  You are all the best people I know, and the main reason we all get PMD is because it's a shame to think that we only get to see each other one week out of the year.  However, I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to share that week with all of you.  The last night in Rosslare, CJ, Layabout and I were talking about vacation time from work and CJ commented how he was impressed I used my one week a year of vacation for Mittens, but honestly I couldn't think of a better use for it.

Despite the minor hiccups (lack of hot water/having to bathe with jugs, travel problems) this was probably the best Mittens I've ever been to.

Individual messages?  Sure, why not?

abstauber - You sir, are the most positive and cheerful person I've met in a long time.  I hope you attend many more Mittens.  I owe you for the help that last night in Dublin when you so kindly got me water before the "volcanic eruption" in the bin outside Abrakebabra.  :P

AGA - You're part of the Mittens furniture, but this year we shared some experiences I'd rather forget.  Despite the eyeball licking and having to see your pale Welsh behind though, it was a blast.

bicilotti - Francesco...oh, Francesco.  We all know I have developed a man-crush on you.  The most stylish and classy pervert I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.  Sorry I couldn't "unload."

cat - I've never met anyone so enthusiastic about jacuzzis and drinking in them.  You bring a welcome enthusiasm to the group and I'm glad you came back this year.

Creed Malay - I always look forward to spending time with you.  Your creativity is amazing, and working together on crazy ideas always proves fruitful.

CJ - Always a pleasure seeing you.  Your willingness to play along with all the crazy ideas and enthusiasm to just have a great time is always inspiring.  Thank you for making AGS and allowing all of this to exist in the first place.

Disco - Our organizer! Thanks for pulling everything off and for being another entertaining member of the Mittens crew. No thanks for that one night with the towel. You know what I'm talking about.

Esseb - Though I didn't talk to you as much this year, having you around was still fun.  I think you made up for Berian sleeping this time around.

Jake - Kissing Chicken? Really? Well, it looks like we're the new Valentine's Day splash screen. Good to see you again, and sorry I only honored my buying pints promise once.

Kim - Also great seeing you again, and thanks for playing along with our movie! Your banshee scream still haunts me to this day.

Layabout - Like I said at The Celt, having Mittens in Ireland without you would just have seemed wrong. Fantastic hanging out again. I haven't laughed as hard as I did with the Banshee Hunter for a while.

LimpingFish - I'm also glad you came, and stayed the full time. I really enjoyed seeing the caterpillar grow wings, and count our drunken conversation in the streets of Wexford among my favorites of the week. The guy I said goodbye to after Cafe En Seine was completely different to the one I greeted at Connoly Station, in the best way possible.

Magintz - Another fun travel companion through the craziness of Dublin. Next time I hope you can make a full Mittens, you're fun to have around.

Matt - Dear Matthew, who would I have touched all week if not you? See you on Skype later... oh god.

Miez - A gentleman and a scholar...as well as a capturer of horrible drunken activities! But you're my favorite Dutchman, and I'm always happy to enjoy your company.

m0ds - What can I say? You're also a main reason Mittens exists, and I can't thank you enough for that. Also, I appreciate the help with the movie.  Always a pleasure.

Ouxx - Unfortunately we didn't have too much interaction, but when we did speak it was enjoyable. Sorry we couldn't hang out in Dublin.

Snarky - I really enjoyed our talks this year, and feel I got to know you a lot better. Hey, I told you all about my post-Ben Jordan game, and I wasn't even drunk! That's gotta mean something.

Tzach & Noa - You two were a delight. It's always a bit of a worry when new people show up and you wonder how they'll adapt to the insanity of Mittens, but you fit right in (that's a compliment, I assure you!) Thanks for keeping me company the last couple of days in Dublin.

So, now that all that's overwith, here's my pictures!
http://www.grundislavgames.com/mittens2011 (http://www.grundislavgames.com/mittens2011)

And here's the Voyeur Bathroom Panorama
http://www.grundislavgames.com/mittens2011/panorama.jpg (http://www.grundislavgames.com/mittens2011/panorama.jpg)

So that was Mittens! I'll have the movie edited and out after BJ8 so as not to spoil anything, but I'll probably pass along clips via PM as I get them together.

Oh yeah, and I didn't meet a single Seamus! Ireland, I officially want my money back!  >:(

My brain is back in working order, and the sun has stopped roasting me!

Such a crazy, intoxicating seven+ days I have never before experienced. Everyone was wonderful, but to single out the special times:

Grundislav and Layabout, who braved a journey into the unknown nightlife of Wexford with me, along with CJ, who blagged us some female company for the evening. Snarky, Meiz, and Cat, in whose company I began the first day's traveling to Rosslare, and who were always open to conversation and company for the entirety of Mittens. Abstauber, the bringer of the Mojito, and the most upbeat individual I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Bicilotti, who along with being the only Italian I've met, is surely also the greatest, for every Italian after him can only be a letdown. Creed Malay and Kim, two of the sweetest people I've been lucky enough to meet, and also two of the most open and creative. Matt, who managed to make me laugh almost every time he said something. AGA and Jake, whose friendship and perverse banter were a highlight of the house's drinking sessions. Tzach and Noa, whose friendliness and humor were both a pleasure and enlightening. Mods, who must be experienced before he can be explained, is surely the most delightfully insane individual I've ever had the pleasure of drinking with. Esseb, who I regret I didn't get to know better, but who was always up for a laugh or a trip to the pub. And the late additions, Monsiuer Ouxx, and the ever-friendly Magintz, both of whom I look foward to seeing more of in the future.

But Disco, who brought us all together this year, and who kept the house in order, deserves special thanks. Well done, Ken!

I was quiet when I arrived, I was loud when I drank. Neither of these people is the real me, something I always find it hard to express, but Mittens brought me closer to expressing it than I've ever felt before.

And it leaves me confident about next year. I hope you'll all be there. :)

...

Damn you, PMD!

It was so great to meet everyone again. Also the new people and people I haven't met yet were great.
Thanks a lot to Ken for organising everything, paying the deposit (which I hope you got back already?) and constantly nagging the owners about stuff that didn't work.

It was a fantastic week + weekend and I'm already looking forward to next year!

I love being the latest late person! :D

Most of you missed it but Matt joined the Irish army!

This has been my favorite Mittens! Italy was the most beautiful but it was my first and I was piss-scared of everybody. XD It was way better this time around.

I am going to be annoying and ask to be called Kimberleigh if peeps can remember, though. Just a personal pref but I can never get anybody to call me by my name! XD My handle's fine too if that's easier. If SeventhBard is still thwarting you with the three syllables thing Sev is acceptable and so is Bard. Cuz I'm the storyteller and all that. I tend to try to remain gender neutral on most gaming forums I'm part of but since a lot of you have met me in person now I'd suppose that to be something of a moot point. ;)

I'm going to jump on the messages-to-everyone bandwagon, because frankly I like the idea!

abstauber - I was happy to meet you! Your cheerfulness is infectious and I hope we get to see more of each other at susequent Mittens!

AGA - You take all the ribbing you get with a kind of surly grace, neither taking things lying down nor letting it trouble you unduly and I've always thought that was cool of you! Mostly I just like you, and I like the way you have a tendency to stick up for stuff you feel strongly about. You are a neat person to know.

bicilotti - You are probably the most suave and fashionable person I know, and yet somehow instead of making me feel like a total slob when I stand next to you I always instead feel very welcome and treated rather like a lady, which is terribly cool, and you are happy to express how it feels to be with your friends. I would definitely not kill you with a banana for realz because I think you are the sort of person who is very giving of themself and we could do with more of those around.

cat - You are super fun and you always seem to enter into the spirit of things! Also I am really grateful for your help with teaching me some of the finer points of AGS. One of these days I'll actually finish a game and you'll be in the credits. ;)

Creed Malay - Well the whole thing's your fault innit? ;D My favorite mister, what would I do without you?

CJ - You just kind of make me happy. I like your easygoing nature, your willingness to be open to others' points of view, your generosity of spirit and your general Jonesieness, which is harder to quantify. Thanks for being a gracious host and doing all the driving. XD And don't forget October! I will bake pie. Hellz yeah.

Disco - Michigan just breeds cool people I guess. ;) You are a funloving and affectionate sort of fellow and I like to be around you. Also thanks for staying cool when I accidentally flashed you in the hostel. Brofist.

Esseb - You're one of the most interesting people I know and I always look forward to talking with you! I was so excited when I knew you were coming this year because I knew that whatever else happened it wouldn't be dull. Also you take some of the neatest photos ever. And I will always remember and appreciate the way you took pains to engage with me on previous outings when I was intimidated by so much strange company because after that I felt more like I fit in. Yay!

Grundislav - Wherever you look, there is Grundislav in the thick of things. You have an insatiable enthusiasm for... everything! I love your vitality and your friendliness and your entertaining hijinks.

Jake - We didn't get the chance to talk much, but I like the way you smile as though you've got some kind of secret joke, and I like the way you seem to take the world in stride.

Layabout - You jumped into all the shenanigans like you were born to it and were friendly with everybody and I thought that was awesome! You are the best banshee hunter I know.

LimpingFish - I was really glad to meet you and I found you to be a very warm and sincere person and I really hope we get to meet again. And also you get a billion banshee points for making a scary game because those are my favorite.

Magintz - I'm sorry we only got to see you for like, a day, because I would have liked the opportunity to interact with you more. So you'll just have to come to the next trip!

Matt - Can't wait for you to come over and get gamemaking with me and the Creedster! It was so neat getting to know you better on our swanky little roadtrip home and hanging out with you on the museum day was a lot of fun! Can I call you mushroom, cuz you're such a fun guy? Sorry, couldn't resist. If we're still friends after that pun then you must be pretty cool.

Miez - You have a creative energy that I really vibe with and I find hanging out with you very soothing in a way I can't quite describe. I'm always happy to be around you.

m0ds - You are vivacious and interesting and fun and I like hanging out with you. Get on a bus and come visit us sometime!

(I mean, you can all get on a bus and come visit us but uh, some live closer than others which makes that a little easier...)

Noa - It was so fun cooking with you, and thanks for being so friendly and kind. You were fun to hang out with and easy to talk to. And I love seeing you and Tzach interact because it makes me feel like love is a living thing that breathes and moves, I don't know how to describe it. I hope Davy and me look like that in another two years. ;)

Ouxx - It was great to meet you too! You had a good deal of capacity for fun despite the computer issues that were confounding you and next time it'll be so neat to see you unwind more. :D

Snarky - I admire your forthrightness and even though we haven't had a lot of opportunity to talk so far I am always glad to see you and I like having you around!

Tzach - You're funny and open and I love the way you really get into the spirit of trying new things. I like your positive energy and you and Noa are an awesome couple of people and I hope I get to see you both again sometime.

Good times, good times.

Oh and Noa, thanks for taking what might be the only good recent photo of me in existence. For whatever reason the camera tends to catch me only when I'm in a weird pose, making a bizarre face, or have wet hair or disheveled clothes. Maybe I just look like that most of the time? Grundislav - You seem indeed always happy while at Mittens, and you manage to spread this happiness in the whole group. Looking forward to the film!

Jake - I don't think I've ever met someone that excited about a free beer :D

Kimberleigh - Das Banshee! You were really scary in your costume! I hope you will finish that cute hamster game some day.

Layabout - I hope your long journey was worth it for you, for it was definitely great meeting you. You are an amazing banshee hunter.

LimpingFish - You never know how a person is just from the forum posts, and you were a pleasure surprise! You integrated in the group very well and gave me some insight into Irish history.

Magintz - Too bad you only could come for the weekend, you seem to be a great person!

Matt - Great to meet you again this year, I'm really looking forward to your game!

Miez - I really enjoyed your company. I never met someone else being that calm and fun at the same time. Also thanks for letting me watch you doing your pixel magic.

m0ds - I'm glad you could make it to Mittens, wouldn't be the same without you. Im looking forward to BJ:MD!

Noa - Thanks for nagging us to go to salty island. No puffins but still fun! I hope you didn't get a massive phone bill from texting and calling for directions where to go...

Ouxx - I hope you enjoyed your stay, it was not really clear to us if you did. Next time less computer and more interaction please!

Snarky - Although we sometimes have completely different opinions, I really enjoyed our conversations a lot. It was interesting to get to know other point of views.

Tzach - You fit perfectly into the group and it was great to meet you. Thanks for bringing us to that traditional music session of your friend. Also, be assured I'll train "speed" and challange you next year.

Also greetings from Bernhard - Dublin was fun for him and he enjoyed meeting you guys and gals!

I just saw this. It has now become perfectly clear to me that you were all conspiring behind my back, freaking out : "Is he angry? Is he bored? I'm sure he's bored. Look, he looks bored! Omagad what did we do to bore him that much? I'm so sorry for the poor guy because he's so bored."  :D
I. ENJOYED. IT. GODDAMIT.  :D

Next time I'll come with a poney as a diversion. People love poneys.

Reviving this old thread many years later because I remember us visiting the mummies in St Michan's, which have reportedly just been destroyed in a fire caused by an arsonist:

I'm sad for the mummies but happy that you dug up the old thread and made me remember the good times we had.

You could still change all your vacation plans and drag your kids along to Chipping Campden against their will this summer.

Likewise. Looking back through even just a couple of the pages in this thread brings all of it back.

After a long absence, I am quite looking forward to getting back to whatever this is again:
