I haven't mentioned it here, yet, but I have videotaped, edited, subtitled, and uploaded "The Monkey Island Play" to the net, recently. Every fan of the series really should get the two available segments (I suggest the large subtitled version). Of the total nine episodes, two are currently available, and they are coming out every weekend.

Well, what's with my talking on and on? Where's the links?

Now get downloading, and start laughing.
Downloading as I speak...
I may be speaking for a long time...
Hmmmm... it has some funny moments, no doubt about that, but the whole is somewhat... lacking. Very fun, very entertaining, but I. mot particularly fond of a couple of things. The voodoo lady is one, though I loved her "vanishing act". And is that the same actress that played Elaine? I don't know, she seemed lackluster. Little things. But there are great moments, no doubt, and the whole seems to be very creatively and coherently staged. Just a question: those screens we say from the actual game, how were those moments in the actual play? Were they shown in a giant screen, or something?
No, I added those in during editing, because I felt that it helped in some cases. And no, the Voodoo Lady is not played by the same person as Elaine.
Ok. They looked alike, though - not just the color, either. At least as far as I could see - I got the "small" versions. What DID they show in those parts, then? Just "waiting"?
BTW, I forgot to mention - the recording is of great quality.
yeah, it would just be transitions between scenes. but for some reason, the play would have music that didnt relate at all to the play, like alternative/pop music, which I didn't want included. Later, he used the "monkey island rocks 2 music" which I left in, so you can see the transition, that is, if it wasn't already in the most recent release.
They stole the Indiana Jones reference, I wanted to put into my Monkey Island parody! >:(
But beside that, I like it!Ã, ;D
EDIT: Oh yeah, I had the Castaway-reference-idea, you can see in the screenshots, at first, too!
that is teh scariest thing ive ever seen..... well theres thand AnD THE LEGO REPRODUCTION OF MELEE ISLAND
its still scary
Wow! I had never heard of this before. Thanks for the link Scummbuddy, I had great laughs. :P
I saw part one, pretty entertaining and fun. I wish my school would put on plays of cool things like this :P I'll have to get the next part now then...
Edit: Seen it, and hah I loved that Indiana Jones refrence!
This is great, looking forward to the whole thing. I really like how he sticks everything in his pants :P
Yeah, that's one of those little things that looks great. Accourse it helps if you know about adventure games. But for that matter, if helps if you've played Monkey Island :) Wasn't there some actual point in some game where someone actually did comment on it, btw?
Looks cool. I might download it later if I have time.
MI Play - Part 3 Posted by: Dalixam | Comments (2)
Scummbuddy has informed me that WMI is now the official host for the Monkey Island play and I am happy to present the third clip to you. This week, did Elaine come to the dock to see Guybrush drown? Will Guybrush get this insatiable need to finish his three trials more quickly? Will Guybrush fare well against... The Machine!? Will Guybrush learn his insults in time to fight the Sword Master? Will he even be able to find his way to the Sword Master's house? Find out this week when Guybrush closes in on completing that third trial... Mastering the Sword.
There is a large and small version of the clip and each with or without subtitles.
Large (35 MB) Large with subtitles
Small (10.4 MB) Small with subtitles
Enjoy!
go to http://www.worldofmi.com for the show!
At last! Downloading it right now :D
EDIT: Just watched it. Great stuff. Already waiting for the fourth part!
Scummy, this is great... thanks for the link.
*EDIT* This prooves that MI is one of the best storylines in the history of the GAs.
Grr hurry up and do 'em all! I can't wait!
I think this play is brilliant, it really gives MI a good name. I LOLed so many times while watching it.
I've just seen it.
There are more elements from the monkey island comic, but with new jokes.
It's fascinating, how Monkey Island fans make the story funnier and funnier! :D
I especially like the sexy pirate wenches! ;)
Wow... Is there a script available?
I believe Chris Heady told me that LucasArts didn't want the script published for the internet, but then again, they didn't want the video on the web.
[under oath]
"I video taped the show, and distributed it on the net all on my own. Chris had nothing to do with it."
[/under oath] ::)
I'll ask him again if he has the script, but when I asked if he had one I could use for subtitling the movies, he said, "the actors made up their lines a lot, so it wouldn't do much good, but I'll see what I can do."
I haven't again asked for the script since then, but if you still care for one, I'll check.
I was just thinking it might be fun to do at my school. But I know of only one or two people that might have played the game, or at least heard of it.
I was just curious anyway. The boy who plays Guybrush is rather good. I can't say much for Elaine... I just wish you could've made a better recording. Not to be insulting or anything, but it's not at the greatest angle (probably the best you could get, seeing the room design.)
The sound is also lacking. I wish you would've had a 3CCD camera and a soundboard and mics at your disposal, to do this play real justice. I'll soon be uploading scenes from a play I helped shoot and edited soley.
All in all, great stuff and I applaud the effort and quality. I want to see this show live.
you don't know how badly I wanted better sound quality for these videos.
the angle was chosen as rightcenter, last row, just so I could have a plug to keep my camera charged during filming, and so i could get a wide angle. I did make mistakes while filming it, such as zooming out too far/fast but part of that blame goes to me not knowing what was about to happen on stage, such as where the center of attention deserved to be filmed.
all in all, im happy, but I know I can do better.
Like I said, I don't mean to act like the superior or seem like I am bragging, but just wait till you see what I pulled off. I am very proud of it, I must say. But it shall wait until I get my DVD Burner, so I can rip the video off the DVD.
But I paitently await the next installments of this great play!
Part 4 is up at World of Monkey Island www.worldofmi.com
Go get it you scurvy dogs!
I just saw it and I liked it.
I'm looking forward to the coming parts.
But I have a question:
I read that in part 2 is a reference to The Incredibles.
I never saw this film, so could you tell me, where this reference is?
"Shut up! I'm monologging"
Ah, thanks!
Seems like Scummbuddy had forgotten this. Part 5 is up. I'm downloading it right now.Ã, www.worldofmi.com
I was in New York, but thanks for posting the link here as well. Four more episodes to go!
I have a question:
Will there be a complete cut, after all episodes are out?
That would be more comfortable, if you want to watch the play completely!
Yeah, true for me, but right now i am just downloading them and putting them in my 'Videos' folder, well, at least that's what i plan to do, seeing as i am only downloading the first one right now. I guess somone could merge it into one [everyone looks at the person next to them, trying to hide themselves].
Well, Windows Movie Maker is a capable tool for merging videos, but there are better.
Or if you get really desperate, you can always just que the individual movie files up in Winamp or Movie Player :P
That's so awesome. Thanks a bunch for this, Scummbuddy! :)
Does anyone know when the next part is coming out? (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paapeli/rsmiley/kiemurasuu.gif)
I think I might, since I'm the one who uploads it to WorldofMI, and I am currently subtitling it, so hopefully, it will be up within a day or two.
That's great Scummy, I've been downloading them all and Finally when I felt like watcing it, all the parts were ready, and I watched it all in one sitting.
It's entertaining, and follows the story well, some quite funny parts too.
Well worth your efforts, thanks alot
I watched the last parts and they were fun. Thank you, Scummbuddy, for seeing all the trouble for this!
Heh, no problem. It was a lot of fun, and I was just lucky enough to live close enough to be able to go see the play in person. But I knew it was too big for the Monkey Island community to miss out on, so of course I brought my video camera.
And getting the nice comments makes it all worth it.
I liked Guybrush's lines about what he's learned, ;D
I know you can tell from the video, but seriously, that place was in an uproarous laughter after that line... very nice spin on the classic line.
How can I get the first episode with subtitles? I'm asking this because I have some difficulty understanding english when it's spoken, so I'll enjoy it a lot more if I watch the whole thing with subtitles. If I can't get it I'll watch it without them anyways
Did you search the news archive?
Part 1 - Large with subtitles (http://www.worldofmi.com/files/miplay/MonkeyIslandLST1.wmv)
Part 1 - Small with subtitles (http://www.worldofmi.com/files/miplay/MonkeyIslandSST1.wmv)
Thanks! ;D
No, I didn't notice it :-[. I scrolled down and saw that part 2 was the earliest there, so I tried renaming the link of the 2nd to the link of the 1st. So I found MonkeyIsland1L.wmv, but not MonkeyIsland1LST.wvm... But that's because the number was after "LST" in this episode, duh. But anyway... I'm gonna watch it now. Thanks again for the link, and of course, thanks to Scummbudy for the recording :)
Edit: I just finished watching it. That was great! Some parts are really funny (like the one mentioned about what Guybrush meant, or when the head said "'sup") and it followed the story quite well.
That was fun :D Thanks for spending the time editing, subtitling and uploading.
I thought it was kind o ffunny that Guybrush never took off the necklace when talking to the ghosts at the end :P Maybe its magicness wore off or something.
And they played Relient K's cover of "Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" at the end! Good choice!
Yeah, if I could fix only one thing about the play, it would probably be the sound. but, if I could fix a second thing, the necklace would be removed when talking to ghosts...
or maybe "it was all in his mind that he was invisible, and when he didnt want to be, he wasnt... but thats simple quantum physics, and we all know how well Quantum Physics and Pirate lore go together. ::)
