Title: Music for your game
Post by: The Scorposer on Wed 21/01/2004 00:56:55
 Hi, everybody

I'm a first-year student at an art school in Canada where I'm attending Music & Art. Now, just so I can practice composing, I think that maybe it would be a nice idea if I made some Main Themes (title-music) for your games.

It's important however that:

- You enjoy making games
- You enjoy playing games
- You eat plenty of vegetables

Because this is my first time composing for games I'm not (yet) aware of any type of problems I could run into (technically speaking),  so that means noone's left out (Isn't that nice!)

If you're interested let me know: Just leave a PM (private message) or sent me an email: scorposer@hotmail.com

Do you have any samples we could listen to?

Stuff you've worked on for other things?

What style(s) do you favor/prefer?

Oh ... and welcome to the AGS forums!!

- it's not a crappy game (Hey, I have my proud, too!)

lol... how would you measure a game's crappiness? that would help with reviews :)

Welcome to the forum, Scorposer!

EDIT: On a more serious note, I think it's a bit strange that you're asking to compose music on a finished game. I'm one of those who think that music composing should be done with the early stages of production of the game (after you've written the plot, when you're creating graphics)

Welcome Scorposer! A word of advice, you should offer to make music for everything and anything!

Then forget to actually make the music! ._.

Okay, here it goes:

Darth Mandarb: I'll try & put up some samples on my site. I don't really prefer any styles (that I know of).

Ciro Durán: I guess a game is crappy when there's nothing else to do than walk around in no more than 2 rooms (or something like that. Dunno really).
About the serious note: It's indeed possible to compose for a game in progress, but only when it's a game I'm making myself :P. This is because I've got to get a 'certain feel' about the game to compose a theme. This is probably not standard 'composer-procedure', but this is how I work.

m0ds: Okay, I will... Unless the game isn't finished.... And not too short. Oh, and not too crappy  ;)

And: Nice to be here!

Why won't you work on a game if its short or crappy? I agree, I prefer making soundtracks rather than a single composition for someone, but when you're starting out you really should accept it all. If you want to show people you're committed to working on projects then imo you should do some of the smaller/crapper stuff. It's all experience.

Plus, and I don't mean this in a derogatory way, but a lot of the games that are being made are short. And a lot of people like to start implementing music before the game is finished. It helps inspire them.

:)

Hm, you've got a point there. It's just that I was somewhat afraid everyone would want a theme :P & it was suppose to be something 'on the side' 'cause school's busy enough as it is.

But maybe this won't be the case at all, so:

Everyone's invited, folks!

(I'll edit the top-message)

BTW: Loved your work on Fatman, m0ds !

Hey well... I'm gonna kinda tack myself onto this thread too. I don't mean to be hijacking your thread or anything Scorposer, I'm sure there's room for plenty of musicians, right?
Anyway, I'm also keen to volunteer to do music for anyone's game projects. I've been meaning to put together a little demo/experiment in AGS interactive music using GetMIDIPosition and SeekMIDIPosition to be able to switch between different instrumentations of a tune, or maybe even more advanced stuff with PlayMusicQueued. But this thread has inspired me to volunteer and try to get involved with some games first instead. Seems like a better way to get involved.

As far as samples go, this is all the relevant stuff I have to show for now:

an entry for the tunes contest:

and a game I started 4, going on 5 years ago, all my music - I think I've gotten better since then, though:

Send me a pm if interested.

Yet another musician, welcome. The best way to get work as a musician is to give us some samples to listen, as DM already said and modgeulator already did.

Ehh, yeah, I have nothing more to say :P

If anyone is interested, I could use some music for my upcoming game (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=11239).
