I discovered AGS when I discovered there were free King's Quest remakes out there.  I grew-up on King's Quest, and loved all of the Quest for Glory series as well.  When I discovered AGS, I saw that there are a TON of games out there, so I hardly know where to start!

So, should I start with some of the highest-rated games, or can people give me a few recommendations of what they would consider to be "must play" games?

I haven't played every AGS game (sadly, not even close to an 1/8 of the games), but all of these are games I have played and completely recommend. I'm probably missing a few titles.

Short length games:
Games by Ben304, they're short and fun (in order of production)..
Also..

Medium Length Games:

Enjoy.

no Yahtzee games?

I refuse to be influenced by the perception of yahtzee and can seperate the art from the artist.

I fully recommend the John Defoe series and the 1213 series by yahtzee.

Sure, they're alright games and fun to play, but they aren't on my recommendation list cause they aren't really my preferred 'style'.

It's also a series that drags on and on.  When I played the first John Defoe game, I really enjoyed it.  But the rest literally slaughtered what I enjoyed about the first one.  Like seriously, why'd he have to bring John Defoe into 7 Days (the space one).  I would have been completely happy with any other numerous possibilities.  And then 6 Days just goes even crazier with all the zen crap and the tall man. lol  It's like that Family Guy episode segment where Stephen King has run out of ideas for a new novel, then suddenly picks up the lamp on the desk saying "it'll be about a..... Lamp monster! OoOooo!"

I know... I know... I'm stepping all over the games that everyone seems to love and adore so much.  I'm an ass. :P

The first AGS game I played was A Tale Of Two Kingdoms and it's still probably my favourite.

Definetely recommend the Defoe series up to trilogy. Fourth sucks after day 3.

I'd recommend Spooks, Barn Runner and Annie Android.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Intense Degree

Must recommend both the Ben Jordan and Barn Runner series of games. Definite Must Plays!

I think "Nelly Cootalot" is a great game.

But I also appreciate Ben Croshaw's games very much and I cannot understand all that theater around his personality. "Trilby's Notes" and "5 Days a Stranger" are definite must plays.

Among the full length games my favourite are the Woltairian games:
"A Second Face" is a very unique AGS must play aswell as the "Earl Bobby" series or "Masters of Sound". They are all very different but somehow similar in style.

What about Dave Gilbert's stuff? Well he's commercial but there is quite a lot to play now. Some of it even for free...

Lively Ivy is also going on and "Spooks" is something to remember.

I love the Apprentice games, i'm a sucker for wizards and fantasy so there are probably two of the best imo.

6 Day Assassin will always have a place in my heart :)

Yahtzee is indeed an asshole. Or at least I find him to be. Anyway, but the games are good, at least the thrree ones

I'll add a game which is short and sweet

Cedric and the Revolution

It's a great game, for newbies of adventure gaming and not.

The Sektor 13 games:
  - The Infinity String
  - Project Xenophobe
(- The Stargate Adventure for Fans of the Stargate Series)

Haven't finished any of these yet, but they seemed cool:

- Emily Enough
- The Vacuum
- The McCarthy Chronicles

Wesray

The Ben Jordan series
X Days a Y + Tilby's Notes
The Apprentice Games
Duty And Beyond
... There are a lot of quality games out there.

Also, some insider tipps that I rarely see mentioned:
Bogs Adventure: Man, I love that game. Crazy, very hard, but still logical.
Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy: Weird art but oh so funny.
Christmas Quest Trilogy: Sure they are short, but they always manage to get me into the holiday spirit.
THE FAR CORNERS OF THE WORLD: Chapter 2 currrently in the works...

Based on your love of King's Quest and Quest for Glory, I'm gonna say do not miss A Tale of Two Kingdoms.  It's an excellent game, and definitely feeds that old Sierra fantasy nostalgia, without feeling like a lame knock off.

The bluecup ratings in the game database are pretty stringent, so if you play anything with 4 or 5 cups (even 3, really), you are probably guaranteed a solid playing experience, but there are some real gems that don't make the cut for technical reasons, so don't be afraid to delve into the lower ratings if you see something that catches your interest.

Play Yahtzee games, they all rock. "Apprentice" series are awesome. Maniac Mansion Deluxe is an excellent title too.
Nanobots! Excellent short game.

Shane 'ProgZmax' Stevens

Play the games that interest you.  There is no 'must play'.

Babar

You MUST PLAY my game.

Find it in my signature :P.

Now, with his very own game: Alien Time Zone

Every AGS game is a must play. That's why they were allowed to be made with AGS.
