I may get to make an adventure with AGS for UNI assessment...

Hi guys, guess what...

it looks like i may be able to make an adventure game with AGS for a special project piece for UNI... I get to come to an understanding with one of the lecturers he will help find appropriate readings. I want to do my special project on game design, planning and implementation.

limit the size of the game, story board, come up with a theory as to what makes games more palyable than others etc etc etc...

i think it will be great. i was currious if anyone on here could recomend readings or reviews i could list or look into.

i may even do a running journal of the work i do on the project throughout my UNI term :D :D... now i won't have any time based excuses... hehehehehe

its made me happy as hell, my first 6 months sucked dogs balls worth of boredom.

I want to write heaps more but currently I'm just getting over a nasty bout of food poisoning. I've only just started eating again... and even then not much. I just ate most of a sandwich and i think its really tired me out. :(

Now, don't go out of your way to buy this book.

I gave up on reading this book because it wasn't what I was looking for but I did read a few chapters and they said a few interesting things about games and what they are. However there are seven million chapters and it's reads like a text book and in many parts it was over my head/of no interest to me.

So check out your local library [that's where I found mine, oddly enough]

yeah i do... i'm almost on holidays myself. i've got one exam to study for but i can start right away...

also i'm gonna be in brisbane from the abou the 23rd till the 29th.... if you want to get together and meet over a beer...

i'll have to sort that out with my girlfriend, we are heading down for her nieces christaning.... which is on the 27th. but if i get the chance i'd like to meet up.

ok yay, i'm over the food poisoning... hooooooooraaaayyyyy


but i come back to find that noone has posted anything...

i've decided to write a 10 room game in the attempt to explore the concepts of
audience imersment,
audience interaction,
audience empathy and relationship to/with the character,
and in some ways orginality and playing with old ideas and principles...

i think the interface will be aÃ,  two pronged gui, something like the loom staff with the ability to cast spells for some puzzles... and point and click.... mmmmm maybe leaning toward general lucas arts but cut back slightly...

what happened to the 50 design tips that were posted on adventure developers years ago....

the game will be fantasy about a faerie called pippette who, during the corination service electing the new ruler, is attacked and trown out of the ethereal city by her brother. who like pippette is in line for the thrown but unlike pippette so is desperate to claim claim it that he was banished and took dark magic. And the flute/pipe of (need name) of power basically. pippette lands in the forest unable to fly, with the pipe/flute must learn to use it, and through helping people on the ground learn responsibility and get back to the city to free her people. and possibley help her brother...

I desperately want to get the best emotional responses out of the characters possible to create an iffinity between the audience and them. I'm going to be using voice overs. i have an ample supply of actors up here... or in a pinch my girlfriend and i can just supply all the voices...

principles that i should talk to my lecturers about to get approval... i want to either read discussions on... or have discussions on interface design... and audience interaction... interactive and noninteractive objects... how real does it need to be to keep an audience entertained... etc etc... as much stuff as possible

On that note, I also suggest playing the games mentioned in the article to gauge your own emotional responses. Particularly Seasons of Sakura.

As for the technical aspects, do you need help with the development of the game or would you prefer to script this on your own (since it's a Uni assignment)?

Good luck Kandyman! Geez, I wish I got to do something like this for an assignment.. But the only projects we'll be doing in school will be mostly internet proramming.
Are you studying game design? There doesn't seem to be a game design faculty anywhere in this damned..un-game-design-ish.. country.. :P
Anyway, I like your story, and would point you to the GTDs had it not already been obvious that you know about them.. There was one on character design you might find useful, and the others can also be of imporatnce. I noticed they've been moved to the Popular Threads forum.
Audience immersion - athmosphere is very important here I'd say, there's a GTD on this too, and there's Grim Fandango and other games.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck! How much time did you get for the assignment anyway?

P.s. About those tips on adventure developers, are you sure there were 50? I remember a list of 21 tips by Bill Tiller and Larry Ahern I believe, game design tips basically, though they are prettty much about playability rather thanthe whole audience involvement theme you're interested in, so maybe this is a different list of tips. I have a printed copy of the 21 tips..

You might want to check out the "The 400 Rules of Game Design" by Noah Fallstein, a few other former LEC employees and other random people. They're only up to maybe a 100 or so so far and annoyingly Noah hasn't put them all up on his website yet so you'll have to either buy old issues of game developer magazine or mail him if you want them.
