In this thread, we discussed the idea of putting neat little icons in either our signiture, or somewhere near our name, to help others find those who are willing to help.

I think it was a good idea. Yes, I believe in the Classified thread we have now, but I think the little icons [lost to the internet] should be brought back as well.
Methinks it's a good idea too.. perhaps text-links would be more telling though.
That sounds really good.
i just made these now...

I suppose they're kinda small but oh well, no skin off my teeth
Eric, do you ever get tired of being badass?
C.
Awesome to the max.
I'm gonna have a go at guessing what those icons are... okay, from left to right:
1 - Dialogs
2 - Programmer or Guy who wastes time on IRC?
3 - Guy with a Sword ???
4 - Musician
5 - BG Artist
6 - Sprite Artist
7 - Animator
8 - Researcher / Detective ???
9 - A sad person who enjoys reading Binary?
10 - Story Guy... :-\
3 - Voice acting?
8 - Beta testing?
9 - I'd say this is scripting. But what is 2 then?
What about
- Translations
- Sound effects
If you guys go to the link Scumm provided, Eric made all those sprites from those suggestions.

I think it's a nice idea... Go for it!
2) Betatesting?
I agree that number 3 is voce acting...
9 scripting?
8 researching...

so close mr remo
the magnifying glass is proof reading and the 1's and 0's is coding/scripting
the first one can and will also double for Making Out
Curses! Foiled again!
Great, they will surely come in handy.
Now do one which means "dances naked for food"
This is why I think text links are better.. no guesswork.
Good stuff, nice icons eric! I'll make an offer your services thread when I get home from work and put all the icons in it for peeps to use.
:)
We'll need a reliable server to use so the pictures aren't always red x's.
But I like the icons, definitely will put some in my sig.

You could always have tooltips for each image:
<img src="buttons/coder.gif" alt="I can help with CODING">

Or even do it properly and put:
<img src="buttons/coder.gif" title="I can help with CODING">
or even both:
<img src="buttons/coder.gif" alt="I can help with CODING" title="I can help with CODING">
except, we use BBCode on the forums, so it would probably require CJ to hack around with the YabbSE setup to get that working, as BBCode doesn't have alt or title tags for images AFAIK
I believe sig length is rather limited; if you wanted to display two or three icons with tooltips and alt-texts, I doubt it would fit.

I forget that IE is bad and makes alt attributes a tooltip when it shouldn't, oops! But all images should have an alt tag even if it's alt="".

There may be some sort of mod/hack for YaBB that does the same sort of thing, so chris could just edit it slightly.
Maybe CJ could hack the board code so that [help=code][help=story] or similar could be used?
Or you could make all your icons into one image, then label it with text. See below.
But, what's the point of having images then? You could just use text.
I feel the tooltips are a must, and I believe having them under our avatar and personal text was the original idea, and one i like.
Or you could of course just do what we did before. That is, offer your services in the thread - explaining what you can offer etc and put the symbols up.
Or you can just have a sensible sized signiature and display the icons you desire.

Okay, so it seems people have started to add these to their signitures, but where is the safe place that is hosting these? I saw barnettcollege, but are we allowed to direct link from there? Shall we wait for CJ to see about uploading these, or should we use Neoles services?
CJ once stated that he had an idea to include the options of selecting whichever services you had to offer from your profile, which I still think is a super idea.
It seems people are using their own web-servers to host their personal selection of icons (because there is not enough sig space to link several induvidual icons). But, you're more than welcome to link from the Barnett College images.
Aye, I've been meaning to add this to profiles for ages, just never quite got round to it. I'm not going to hack it into the forum right now because I'm planning on upgrading the forum software soon, so I'd have to do the hack again.
So until then, using signatures sounds like a good idea.
Great work eric, I'd be happy to host the images on agsforums if we need a constant place to link them from.
One more icon/service would be useful: Translator. The person could specify what languages they know in their signature, or in the sticky thread at the top.
EDIT: Also, in my signature, you'll notice that if you click on the icons it takes you directly to my post in the sticky thread for more details.
