Title: old mittens thread
Post by: on Thu 06/02/2003 15:00:06
the dates for mittens 2003 is
Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August 2003

So you think you're cool? Think you're l33t? Then why haven't you signed up for Mittens 2003 yet!!?

If you plan on coming to Mittens this year, then visit the website: http://www.mittens.cjb.net and sign up.

I'm getting this done early so Andail and myself can take a look at some possible numbers of atendee's. By signing up, you're not saying you're "deffinatley" coming, but more "I hope to come". Don't sign up if you can't come and you just want to click some buttons and fill my email inbox. :p

Remember, that this year it's in Sweden, and is taking place in mid-late July (see above for final date) as it was last year. After signing up, you will ocassionally recieve a Mittens newsletter.

Anyhoo, go now, sign up. It'll be great fun. (Mittens that is, not the signing up process).

http://www.mittens.cjb.net

Number of people signed up so far:
18

I don't want to accuse anybody of anything, even those trying to entice young poeple out to remote cottages :)

Seriously, though, you young uns out there should be careful of any meeting organised on chatrooms. Check out:

There was a Mittens 2002 also, and it went okay :). This is hardly the "preteen pokemon 3003" forum.

Edit: Besides, there's an age limit.

Scottish hero, we hardly know you, you've been here for what, a month?
Andail is very well known, also in person, by many members of this board. I think your attempt was overzealous.

SuperScottishHero, I appreciate your patronism, but we're not strangers to each other here.

I have personally met with 14 AGS-members (a record?) and some twice, and I can assure you that they all were not only completely harmless and normal and sane, but also a great bunch of interesting, thoughtful and cheerful people.

This is not just a chatroom, it's one of the most close-knit communities you'll find.

Mr.hero, while you worrying is certainly understandible, I doubt we would have that problem here. any of these people have met, and this would have to be one elaborate plot to steal kids if so many people's stories match. plus, little kids (well, 4 the most part) dont go here. adventure games were before their time.

However..this is the reason I can't attend. My parents are convinced that you people are rapists. or at least a few of you. I guess I have to wait a few years, then go before I go on my mission

I think most folks took my post in the spirit that was intended. They've got public service radio adverts on all the time for the website I mentioned and it was in my mind as the discussion on Sasha's problems progressed. Helm rightly pointed out that many people here are not real people to others and that got me thinking. Of course, if you're under 16 then you should always treat any chatroom people you haven't met already as strangers in real life as a precaution, no matter how long you've known them online. It also unliekly that there are any kids here with the wherewithal to jet off to foreign countries on their own anyway!

So, I know that there were previous mittens and didn't want to cast aspersions on anyone, especially Andail who has done so much for the AGSers even though he didn't get any Academy Awards this year.

Okay guys...the jig is up. I'm really Andail, m0ds, leks, Sylpher, eric, Helm, Butcher, and all other AGSers there are...yes even CJ...except one. You see, it's been my plan to make a whole webpage under the geise of an "Adventure Gaming Website" and slowly introducing new people...eventually putting out the Mittens idea...2002, which really was just me by myself taking pictures of random people. I was trying to trap small kids into a false sense of security and then invite them over... I'm a bad person.

(Okay, but seriously, I just wanted to be really sarcastic...none of the above is true...or is it?)

For the second year in a row, Pestilence will be replaced by her imaginary, beer drinking bean donkey, Senor Pinto Burro. I know you all enjoyed his imaginary presence there last year at Mittens.

And please refrain from having sex with my imaginary donkey. He's underaged and is easily lured into tents with beer.

But since Mills is the omnipotent presence of everything, he can't have raped himself!!!

He just took a wanker..

And boy oh boy, are you mistaken. I mean, hey it's Sweden. Childs getting raped are a belgian feature. We'll smash your face in if you're skin tone is slightly different from sickly pinkish blue (unless you're willing to help us smash the face in of people whose skintone is slghtly different from sickly pinkish blue, in which case your face can remain unsmashed until we're done smashing the other one's in..)

..however, I know from highly secure sources that this cottage lies quite remote, in which, conditional homosexuality may be a factor at this meeting (see! I allready now assume no layday will dare to show up!!! And I don't blame them. I'd having second thoughts about meeting me :p)

Here's a vow:
If anyone from USA turns up at mittens,  I'll do my best to be in USA at mittens 2004.

I'll be there and play chess with MillsJross, do sprite jam with the white board people, play guitar with Grundislav and discuss Kant with Bspeers.
And whatever more you can do across the pond.

That's my vow. See you.

Quote28th July to Friday 1st August 2003

Bleh, I just noticed it... just 5 days, and the first and the last one are for travel... that leaves us with what, 3 days? A bit short for not so cheap journey... This leaves me a little bit in doubt... I don't even know if it's possible considering the bus depature dates.

Trust us - Mittens 2002 was the same length, and IMO is the perfect length for an event of this kind, because it gives plenty of time for preparation beforehand and recovery afterwards, and you only have to take 1 week off work.

Goldmund, 4 nights, 5 days is pretty much enough. Mainly because last year we found that most people ran out of money near the end.

It'd be great to do it longer, but you also have to remember people need to get time off work and such and not want to use all their holiday leave for Mittens!

Anyway, I thought you were going a couple of days early to help set up?

Well, since we're not paying for our stay, it doesn't really matter how long you'll be there.

If you come too early, I might be busy cleaning the place, and if you stay too long, you'll end up alone with my grandpa.

So, Goldie, come whenever suits you.

Ps: Oh, and there's ordinary lots of moose in this area, but maybe not out on the islands. We could plant some in our garden if it'd make you happier, though.

Time for maps!!!1

Europe and mittens:

The important part of scandinavia and mittens. As you can see, there are two islands almost incorporated in the land. Well, you can see a smal string of water surrounding them, can't you?
The northern one is called "Orust."

The northern part of Orust (the island) and mittens:

Buslines and such. Uddevalla is where I used to live. Mittens is right under "sundsandvik".

I draw this map to shpw the exact perimeters of mittens.

I'll come back with routes and prices and all that later.

Okay, for those of us in the UK, I suggest we all take the same flight...

The most cheap/promising-looking one I've found is from www.ryanair.com and leaves London Stansted at 10:50(am) on Monday 28th July and leaves Gothenburg at 21:05(pm) on Friday 1st August. The cost is £19.99 both ways (without tax), which comes to £61.22 all included with tax and fees...

I'm concerned about getting transport from the airport on the way back. If it leaves Sweden at 21:05, then presumably it'll be about 23:00 before we leave Stansted airport. At that time, it won't be possible for me to get a train home.

We really need to be out of the airport by 21:00 at the latest, so an earlier flight home is essential IMO.

I'm just need to find out from work if I can get that week off.

I agree with Chris about the travel times, bearing in mind most of us may need to get connecting trains elsewhere (Who goes direct to Stanstead?)

Also, we don't want to aiming for the last train of the night, cos you just know they'll cancel it!

Hey, it's not cold in Sweden!
We have the gulf-stream - the summers can be as warm central France.
We can even bath in the sea.
In fact, we have to bath in the sea if we want to keep somewhat clean.

Andail, tell us about the place.
Is it big, easy to find.
Is there a local vilage and stores.
Is it far away from a city.
Is there a beach or grass plains or caves with gold treasures.

Was that supposed to be read out as a poem, Jetxl? :)

Anyhow, I will come back soon enough will lots of details regarding the prices and routes and whereabouts and everything, don't you worry.

Oh, and I might also add that we're probably coming close some sort of upper limit regarding the crew...I don't think it would be practical or very convenient to be more than 25 people, so if you want to come, you'd better make up your mind soon.

I would like to remind people that now might be a good time to book their trips, as prices surely will rise toward the summer.
It would also be nice with some updates from people who expressed uncertainty regarding their sign-up...especially people from far away, although it seems the yankies once again bailed out already.

why aren't mittens on the WHAT TO BRING list on the mittens site?

Anyway, I'm not going this year EITHER, although I'm dissapointed that Phil reed is, as now I've not really got any excuse not to have met him... bah. I'm going to assume he's an asshole, and probably gay. Yeah... that's it... he touches children.
