Okay! I think this is the right thread for this sort of thing...
I just played Quest for gloy 4. It's a fantastic game...EXCEPT for the damn bugs, and EXCEPT for the fact that the text boxes appear and disappear too damn fast on my PII machine. The slow-down programs like moslow don't even slow the text down!
This is such an incredibly alluring game - beautiful scenery, interesting music, very interesting plot...but it's UNPLAYABLE!
Someone, please, please, PLEASE create a remake of this game. You'd make a lot of people very happy. I've played all the kings quests and the previous quest for glory games and I think that this had the potential to be the best of all of them...but sierra screwed up.
Anyway, it's just a suggestion guys... :)
Try DosBox, it would solve most of your problems. Okay, except the one about the horrifying amuont of bugs. I remember I had to resort to savegame hacking to circumvent a bug-induced dead end.
As to remaking the game - whoa, that would be a LOT of work, as this is one of Sierra's more complex pieces. But, I believe there's some sort of SCI-VM (similar to SCUMMVM) project), and once that works it could simply be used to debug and patch the game.
I believe there are some unofficial pataches out there to sort out all those creepy crawlies. As for the speed issue of the text boxes - are you using the talkie version, or the non-talkie? I discovered once upon a time that without the voice file, the text boxes don't stay long enough, but with the voice file they stay long enough on any machine, even modern PC's.
This game does not need to be remade. In dosbox, with the patches applied, it runs perfectly.
I had started a remake of the game from it's UGLY roots of 640x400 to a more pleasing 640x480, but I couldn't find anyone who could update the 8-bit MIDI music to 16-bit MIDI; so nothing materialized. :'(
Ugly? umm... ok. I'm sure the extra 80 pixel rows in your versions made it to be stunningly beautiful.
Did I really not sound sarcastic enough ???
Er, QfG4 is 320x200, not 640x400 :)
yeah sorry, right over my head.
You know, the fast textboxes have nothing to do with computer speed. What you need to do is get the darn CD in the drive. Two reasons:
1) QFG4's voice acting is pretty good. There's lots of famous actors doing the lines.
2) The game is designed to skip to the next textbox after the current voice sample stopped playing. Without access to the audio-file, the game keeps skipping through all dialogue because there are no voice samples to wait for.
You'll still want to visit http://geocities.com/belzorash/ and get the timer patch to avoid more grave bugs along the way though.
In case you lost your CD, don't like the voice acting or pirated the CD version; the control panel of the game has a checkbox named "audio". It's turned on by default. Turn it off and the dialogue boxes will remain until you click them away.

my qfg4 crashes when you go through the swamp! So thats where my adventure stopped and I was ticked that I
couldnt import my character into 5...
Well, you CAN import your character from QFG3 into 5, if you have one.
...but the stats will probably be so low you might as well start with a new character...

As people have said before, there are patches now that fix all such issues.

I believe you get +100 on each stat PER GAME earlier than 4 that you imported it from.
Oh. Ok. Well thought out, that.

I seem to remember that you only get whatever your stats were at at the end of the game you're importing the character from. You don't automatically get full stats if you import a QfGIII save into IV, for instance...
No, but you do get improvements if you import from #2 to #4.

Heh...there are patches all right...but they don't fix all the issues!!
They pretty much do... I played QfGIV through a couple of weeks ago with not one of the flaws that plagued the game previously...
Ah yes, a remake of this game would be cool. I never was able to finish it, because of that damn bug in the swamp. I tried everything I possibly could to make it work, but it always locks up there. so sadly, I never saw the ending to this game.
Just read the thread and get the patches, why don't you?
I tried all the patches in the past, and they never worked.
Are you talking of some crappy old Sierra patches, or the brilliant new NewRisingSun patches?
The patch for QFG4 says it fixes "'Error 52' in swamp with 'Chernovy'", and I've never heard of anyone having a problem after applying it.
I think this point needs to be further emphasized:
This guy (http://geocities.com/belzorash/) is making patches for old Sierra games, and games that have always been incredibly buggy are now completely stable!
Ok, well I'll try it. :-) It would be awesome if it worked.
