The original Dune game was lame? What?!
Yeah, I probably agree with that. Note that the Dune most people know (the one that made the Real Time Strategy genre famous) is actually called Dune II. The game called Dune is pretty darn obscure (and not an RTS).

I'd recommend either contacting the owner of the copyright or just stay away from using someone else's setting. I don't think contacting the copyright owner would actually be that difficult - just get their address and mail them a letter. If you explain what you're trying to do, I think most times they'd be OK with it (just hang on to their response letter!).
Depends. If said owner is an individual, by all means talk to them (I actually managed to get permission from Richard Pini a long time ago, w00t!). If said owner is a corporation, don't even bother asking because they won't understand your point of view (for instance, the Garfield game was shot down when he kindly asked permission).

I am talking of the Cryo-developed original Dune, part adventure game, part strategy. I am no Dune fanatic, but I thought it was a very nice game.

Ok, thanks for input.
Now, first of all, i meant Dune (I) the so-called adventure game with a twist of strategy was lame. And i'm not just saying that! I played it first time i saw it and it just killed the enthusiasm. And then i deleted it.
Secondly, the core of the first Dune book is the war between the houses (Atreides and Harkonnen) which, in turn leads to betrayals and backstabbing. But survival is a very strong subtext, this planet being a desert planet with almost no water.
Thirdly, apparently, i must contact the editor the book to get permission and i even have an adress, so i guess i could contact him. The only problem is, who'd give permission to make a game about a best-seller to an OVERZEALOS TEENAGER?!
Damn!
I guess i should leave this thing to the professionals.
Damn the government, the editors and the publishers!! >:(
What happened to the designers? Huh? :'(

Oh, and returning to adventure games made from non-adventure games, yes, the shooter genre could easily be made an adventure genre because there are many monsters and if those monster are transformed into puzzles, then there you have it!
But, you could always blend the two genre like Yahtzee (1213) or even myself, because i'm trying to implement an easy-to-use gun fighting option into adventure games, thus making the gaming experience more thrilling i believe...
Oh, this leads to a question... i feel it...
ZING!
What do you think of shooters with adventure sub-layers or adventures with shooter sub-layers?
