Title: Restart GUI from SOMI...
Post by: monkey0506 on Sun 18/07/2004 02:17:24
My "Prt Scr" button does not work while I have DOS open for some reason, SCUMMVM replaces this GUI with it's own, and DOSBox no longer reads my SOMI CD. What I'm looking for is an unedited screencapture taken directly from The Secret of Monkey Island. I need the GUI that displays on keypress F8, the restart GUI. I have recently found myself incapable of getting any more screenshots of the standard Popup GUIs. Please do not post a reply telling me to use PrtScr, ScummVM, or DosBox. I cannot get them to work. I am just looking for an unedited screen capture. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

You can try a Screen Capture utility. Here's a nifty one I use sometimes. I used it to take that Monkey Island ScreenShot for you actually. It's "UltraCapture":
(You can get a free download over here)

http://www.5star-shareware.com/Graphics/Screen-Capture/ultracapture.html

You can set any key you like to do the ScreenCapture. (Just click the "Setting" from the menu-bar, then "Configure" then select the key you like for taking a capture).

Because the program is ShareWare, before registration it disables the "save" option after a certain number of saves (I think up to 30 saves through it), but, because it puts the ScreenCapture on the computer's clipboard memory anyways, it's easy to simply open up just about an graphic-editor program and "Paste" the capture, than you can save or edit as you like.Ã,

It looks the UltraCapture utility is no longer in development, but the Shareware version still works great as it is (just follow my suggestion about pasting the capture).Ã,  If you look around the Net, there's lot of other similar utilities that can do the same for you.

Thanks again, but it won't work. I'd go try on my mom's laptop, but her CD drive reads too fast for such a scratched up CD. All the screencapture utility got was a black screen. Any more ideas?

Can you try manage to get your Monkey Island game running in a windowed mode somehow? Then try the ScreenCapture utility then. I know that from some programs in Full-screen mode, that it can sometimes mess up the screen capture. Well, I don't have the CD version of MI1, so, perhaps someone else who does may be able to help ya. Good luck.

Well, thanks for trying, but it won't force windowed mode. I've tried everything I can think of. So please, if you have the CD version of SOMI, take a minute, put it in your cd drive, and take me a screenshot. PLEASE!

The only last thing I might be able to suggest (if you've not already tried) is to use a combination of the  Ctrl and Print-Screen Keys together.  I know you mentioned yo've tried the Print-Screen button with no effect, but sometimes Ctrl & Print-Screen keys together will force a capture to the clipboard.

Was doing a little checking for you. Looks like HyperSnap might do it for you:

I haven't tried it yet myself, but I found a MI forum that says it will take screen-shots in all of the MI games:

THANK YOU! That is EXACTLY what I needed. YOU ARE SOOOOOO AWESOME!!! THANK YOU!!! Fritos, do you by any chance have Loom? Because I need to rip some of those GUIs as well. Not sure if I could get that to work somehow, but probably. It should work with DosBox, because my Loom CD isn't scratched very bad. Just in case, if you do have it, can I get your email?
