Title: [Results] HOURGAME 19/1/2017
Post by: Babar on Wed 18/01/2017 16:47:13
EDIT: Hourgame is over!
Everyone vote now!

Hello everyone!

Not much for long complicated posts (that's a total lie).
On the spur of the moment, we in #AGS irc decided on having an hourgame (that is a total truth).
Time is in about 2 hours and 15 minutes from this post (7pm GMT?)
Rules not yet set.
Will try to get someone to post the rules in here when it starts (might not be me, because I want to participate), but to get into the mood with like-minded participants, you can join the #AGS channel (the server is irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk and the channel is #AGS) on IRC, or even the AGS discord channel here: https://discord.gg/BSvN5ZF
So get your AGSes warmed up and ready!

I am totally in awe of those who can piece together a working game, however crude, in such a short time-frame.

Good luck to all involved!

Okay, the hourgame ends now!

Voting starts.

EDIT:
Voting works this way: you vote 3 times,
you give 3 points to one entry
2 points to another
and 1 point to an entry.
Radiant finished the game in an hour so he gets 3 extra points at start.

EDIT 2:
Soxy and gameboy start with 1 extra point because they finished(uploaded) their games 15 minutes after the 1 hour.

After playing them all and some thought, here are my votes:

one point goes to Ibispi and the army of creepy carrot-eating snowmen I could not run away from.

2 points go to Babar for a game that, while lacking polish, was fun to play and had a unique backstory.

...and the maximum 3 points go to Radiant, for his game was the most complete and polished of the bunch. The simple gameplay worked well, graphics were neat and consistent. Didn't encounter any bugs, which is an achievement for a game made during such short time. Also, this is the game that offered the longest gameplay time to me.

I haven't really been around during hourgame competitions, so I have no comparison, but I think the competition went really well regarding the amount of entries. Great job, everyone! I really liked Sox's graphics, twas a shame there wasn't much more gameplay.

I give 3 points to Soxy for nice snowman animation and graphics and following the theme of the hourgame which was Winter.
2 points to gameboy for also following the theme and having to clean the snow
1 point to Radiant for surprisingly big game for such a short amount of time, but not really following the theme.
0 points to babar for making a game with a sunny background for the theme winter.

We should make a regular thing of this! And maybe standardise a time suitable for everyone.

Agreed, that would be awesome. (nod)
Something like all the other monthly contests we have around here.

Yes make this a monthly thing!
The only problem I see is that in different parts of the world the time would make it hard for everybody to participate, It could be 3AM!

uhm... hard choice. (wtf)

3 points: Radiant, as he managed to get the most game play out of it. And yes, it's too cold to go outside! (laugh)

2 Points: Babar... mostly cause he managed to make a game with some puzzling to work out... And the sun also shines in winter... I should now, I was on the beach with my son bathing our feet just two weeks ago... in the middle of winter! (roll):-D

1 Point: I'm slitted between gameboy and Ibispi. Really loved the art of gameboy, and portraits... however took me one click to find the shovel. :-\ Ibispi on the otherhand, took me a few secs to figure out how to play... so in the end I enjoed Ibispi fust a tad more, since there's actual gameplay here. So he takes the point.

Sox, what a lovely animation! The first ever bouncy snowman! (nod) Pitty you didn't put any game play. :~(

Ps - Babar got a -1 point, for making his game in 16 bit colour mode. :P

EDIT: Lot of programmers over here... make a DB with themes, then a small website, that picks a new theme every hour... then you can run the hour competition during 24 hours. Participants just need to pick the hour that fits them and the check the theme when the hour they want is up. ;)

Wouldn't that just result in a lot of people winning by default, since almost every contest would only involve one person if anyone at all?

My idea is that the contest gets announced, and anyone who wants to participate works together to choose a date and time, then the winner of last month's contest chooses an exact date and time based on what other people have asked for. Then at the exact time the contest starts, the theme is revealed.

Moving on though, congratulations Radiant on winning. I'm still impressed that you were able to make such a fleshed out and rather large game in such a short time.
And an extra congrats to gameboy, those graphics were awesome considering the time they were made in.

No, voting would only start after 24 hours... the point was "make a game in an hour." the Theme is mostly just to stop ppl from jumping the gun...

Oh, and congrats to all! Just by participating you are all winners. (nod)

@Radiant
If you wish to flesh out your game here's 3 suggestions to make it better:
1 - Add a timer and a record. People just love to beat their times.
2 - Replace the displays with a bubble and icon of what the characters want (and you just made the game playable by small kids, that can't read yet. ;)) You can leave the "intro story" as parents will be glad to read that bit to their kids...
3 - Make a win GUI with some sparkles/firework picture/animation, display the time, the record (maybe flash "new record" if the player just set a new record) and a button for "play again" and another for "quit".

Thanks, maybe I'll put some more time into this. It'll also need a title :)
