The Phil Files
***********
Issue #1: "Adventure Just Begun!"
***********

To start off this short issue of "The Phil Files", let me be the first to say that, yes I am back. Alot of newcomers have come to AGS to find happiness & exclude their rights as a game maker. Noting that engines like Neobook or Game Maker, may seem fun. Blender3D has given itself a grave instinct, as you can create 3D models, animation, & games in the same IDE. Game Maker, which is run by Mark Overmars, is set to release it's 6th edition...this time with 3D graphical features. WOO HOO! But, enough about all these game engines. Let's get on to AGS.

AGS has come a long way. Finally, it has a new release which seems to be running smoothly from what I have tried out with it. Version 2.61 is a screaming hit & it certainly will give you what you want in a game, well, that all depends...I mean, this IDE is only capable of making adventure games! But, then again, you just MIGHT be able to go beyond adventure gaming a tad bit in A.G.S!

3D creation or hand-drawing...well, being a guy who likes a good challenge...heh, either one will do! Although, sometimes, results do not always appear great, but gameplay may differ. Many AGS developers have been trying for months to give some possible 3D element to the engine, & it MIGHT have worked. The only way to find out is to try this for yourself. I already have & let me just say that you will be surprised at the bug fixes in this sucker!

Now, Intelligent Systems has made a release called "Dream Maker". It says you can do virtually ANYTHING with it. But, actually, it is not even finished yet. It is finished to where you can code a few things, but it has a long way to go & from the looks of things...it will NEVER get finished.

AGS, either way, hopefully the resources you people have downloaded for the engine itself, may work well for you & serve as a useful tool in game creation for this remarkable engine. Finally...a tool that allows you to really get sticky without having to learn a programming language...WOAH WOAH, if you wanna make cutscenes & this is important...learn the AGS language. It is NOT hard, even I know it! Although, I am not gonna waste my time typing it here on this thread, because, it would just be worthless...maybe the next issue, I will throw a sample out.

NEXT ISSUE: AGS Sample Cutscene code & more on Game Maker 6 + a review of AGS game; "The Simpsons: Springfield Woes"!

Moox

Its okay, we all have free time ;)
If you just go back how would you know
"Many AGS developers have been trying for months to give some possible 3D element to the engine"?

I just know that there're that many AGS developers... :P

I want to try but I'm not an AGS developer, and I'm surprised that you are.

LordHart

For the love of god. Did you even have a look at any of the older releases? It's always run smoothly and what the hell are you going on about... AGS Developers?

Has CJ managed to turn into a multitude of people now? Amazing... :-\

Gilbert

Well, CJ is multiplying, all by himself, I guess...

Seriously, though, Phil, are you going to start some sort of ezine or just trying to be funny?

hehe...you're so full of nonsense, kid

Damien

You know Phil, Vel needs more writers for the AGS E-zine.

Check it out >HERE<.

LordHart

Vel and Phil together... now thats an image of hell if I ever saw one. :-\

MrColossal

Ok Ultimo we get it, you don't like him. Now please don't act the way you did last time he was here.

Phil, may I recommend you keep all these posts [I take it you're writing an e-zine] to the same thread. Just edit the Subject and add Issue 2 to the same thread?

Or better yet, make it a text file, set up a website and people can check there for new issues.

Issue #2: "AGS is pregnant"
**********************
Well, it turns out that yes, the title of this issue is correct because right here, I am making changes to this issue of "The Phil Files". NO AGS CUTSCENE CODE!!!! BWAHAHAHA! Discover it for yourselves, ya dorks! I ain't giving it away, that is what the help file is for, or the tutorial!! But, Game Maker 6 is coming along fine, as expected a Fall 2004 release is in the kinkers.

"The Simpsons: Springfield Woes", is the only AGS game where, yes you can be a character from a cartoon show. The demo is pretty dumb, I don't even know why they released the game if it will never be finished! A waste of time is what I say. Just like being at PWSE, because nobody showed any respect to me or put forth some support when I was working on projects that would easily make many amateur programmers projects look like baby poop. But, then again, my words may come back to haunt me. But, at least for one thing, I had to cancel ALL of my projects that dealt with Wrestling Sims...why...because I didn't have the time to put forth into them & what would coem out fo them? Nothing. Why? Because, honestly, making games like Adventure games, RPGS, etc. make things a little more exciting, hopefully, making adventure games will give me some experience in making Platform, Fighting, stuff like that....but in any other way, I mean...come on...PWSE is the home of wrestling sims.

Now, I can honestly say that so far I have had no thoughts on what my adventure game is gonna be about. Bad enough, there are so many copyright issues & some games are not even finished. So, it is gonna be VERY hard to come up with something good for people to play, even with a brief storyline & a well thought out one.

But, I mean, hey...all the AGS users did the same thign as I did, they scratched & clawed through dozens of ideas & some didn't turn out & some did. Some won them awards. But, hey, at least these articles will at least give me a chance at getting myself out there.

PWSE or not, at least I can work with things in the AGS world, for the time being. I am still cooking up ideas for a wrestling sim as well as an adventure game...but only time will tell!

NEXT ISSUE: More A.G.S reviews & Tiddybits + PWSE: Sim or Not, Here I Program!

Phil, no offense, but your goal with the "Phil Files" should be more like "helping others" rather than "getting yourself out there". No offense. All I'm saying is it'd help more if you posted things like the "AGS cutscene code".

To do with your wrestling sim, maybe you could just go get some fellow AGSers and make the game with a team rather than doing it by yourself. Get an artist. Get a scripter. Get a musician. Then, with your knowlege of wrestling, you could oversee the game and design the gameplay and stuff. That's how most game companies do it (duh) -- everyone doing what they're best at.

LordHart

Why shouldn't I act the same way. He's still a troll and he's still an idiot... he hasn't learnt anything since he's been away and these so called Phil Files are just a new way for him to flame people... like this:

Quote"The Simpsons: Springfield Woes", is the only AGS game where, yes you can be a character from a cartoon show. The demo is pretty dumb, I don't even know why they released the game if it will never be finished! A waste of time is what I say.

He's pretty much saying that that game is shit, no other way around that. And seriously, how much "research" could he have even done, considering that there have been many other games based upon cartoons... like Garfield, and South Park...

I assure you he's not writing an ezine, cause he doesn't have the competency to do such things. I would be willing to change my views on Phil IF he was to actually release anything except for a god damn announcement that he's making a game... and then another one cancelling it...

Any money that one of the mods (most likely eric) will edit this... :-\

shbaz

Look, if you don't like it, don't reply to it. I have read this thread many times before writing this without saying anything. It is possible.
Once I killed a man. His name was Mario, I think. His brother Luigi was upset at first, but adamant to continue on the adventure that they started together.

Andail

Shbazjinkens, I think Ultimo makes a pretty good point in his last post actually. It's not forbidden to make justified complaints when somebody acts flagrantly wrong.

The thing is of course not to overdo it, and the easiest way to prevent this would be if the rest of us wouldn't start bitching eachother every bloody time guys like PhilRoberts appear.  I know I'm not exactly being an exception here, but I have the moderator's sea-shell of speech, so well....

If could just all give eachother a break, maybe PhilRoberts will get bored and start acting like any other member.
