Winners have been announced later in this thread! Official update to this thread & the Awards page coming soon :)
http://screen7.co.uk/games/gameoftheyear2008.htm
Once again its time to award developers with their hard work from the start of 2008 with the Screen 7 game of the year award! After last years successful attempt one lucky developer will win a smashing Trophy and 2nd and 3rd will recieve runner up prizes. It's a bit late this year, my bad, but a lot of personal stuff has gotten in the way.
Part of the award structure asks that developers themselves and players/fans come forward with the nominations. If you've made a game this year or just played a particularly good one then please do nominate it!
Last years winner was A Tale of Two Kingdoms by Crystal Shard and so Radiant will be picking up his trophy at this years Mittens!
The specific rules are:
>> Only games released between Jan 1st 2008 and July 27th 2008 are accepted
>> Only games that are MEDIUM LENGTH to FULL LENGTH will be accepted
>> Point & click adventures ONLY!
Depending on my resources I will try & have the page up this week sometime on my site. Details on the trophy will be written soon!
If you want to nominate a game please just write it here, you can list up to 3 to be included!
Please include a link to its AGS db page or official website!
Voting is public. You may remember last year I mentioned "judges"...well, these still do not exist, so its all down to public votes. More info soon!
Many thanks :)
Wasn't there a big slice of last year that was left out of last year's contest? Are those games going to roll over into this year's contest or are they just going to be forgotten?
I nominate:
Lost In The Nightmare: Save Our Souls - http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=982
Barn Runner 5 - http://www.barnrunner.com/
;)
Yea, I'd like to nominate Limbo of the Lost because at least it deserves it :P And was released this year in the US
I nominate Ben There, Dan That: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?category=&action=detail&id=1056

1. Beat me to it! :P I second "Ben There, Dan That!" (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?category=&action=detail&id=1056).
2. I also want to nominate "Shoot, I Got Abducted!" (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=34520.0), but if that is too short or something can I nominate all of Ben304's work so far this year...?

This made me smile very much. Cheers!
However, I really doubt that Shoot! is anywhere near the length required to be nominated, the same with Man Boy (Besides, Man Boy is not P&C).
Still, big thanks for your kind thoughts!
I'd like to nominate Nanobots (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=1040) and Once Upon a Crime (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=979).

Many thanks for all the nominations. I have limited time at a PC these days so I will be closing noms on Monday and setting up the vote page on Tuesday, so name some more whilst you have the chance :) Sadly yes these awards do cut out games released in Fall & Winter. If it were to encompass all games form all year it'd really just be the AGS awards, but in the future, when it involves more engines or Ive thought it through a bit more, it might include all year games. But really at the moment its to celebrate games that are released in Winter, Spring & Summer of the current year.
Yay, this is back!
Very well, I nominate Quest for Yrolg (http://crystalshard.net/?g=8).
I could also mention The Hypntoad (http://crystalshard.net/index.php?p=8&s=59) but that probably doesn't count... ;D
Ack, I know it's technically Tuesday, but since there's not voting page up yet, is it too late to nominate "Nanobots"? My favorite game so far this year by far.
Don't worry...

Huh, I missed that line for some reason. Thanks, Akatosh.
Yep, I will be converting these nominations into the page at midnight tonight, so you have til then to nominate something!

Running a little behind, I have problems! But I will set up the vote page through the week :) You'll be able to vote on the same page as you can read the nominations. Hope that helps, Ghost! ;)
I was wondering what happened to the Votes page. Thanks Mods. :)
Does in indeed, thanks ;D And I already had a great deal of fun playing all the nomine...
nation... nom... the games.
I want to nominate COSMOS QUEST III.

Um, sorry to ask, but where's the voting page?
Voting was delayed, and should be up tomorrow. I have little access to my computer at the moment. But the voting will begin in a day & run through till the end of Mittens :)
Right, all fixed! The voting is now open & will remain so for the duration of Mittens! Which in fact, is where I have to leave for in 35 minutes, and I still need to pack my rucksack :O
So get voting! And keep an eye out for publicity of Radiant recieving his award, and a wedgie!
;)

Well I made my vote. Can't wait to see the results. ;D
Tricky... but my vote is cast.
Many thanks you two, and everyone else who's voting too :)
Is there a way to see how the games are doing so far without having to 'Submit Vote' again? 8)
Yes indeed, providing you're as smart as an adventure game puzzle solving hero ;)
Since the games DB (and hence d/l links for most games) was down for most of Mittens, is the deadline for voting getting extended?

Mittens is over. What are the results? ??? ;)
As there was a problem with the DB and all the games on the page are linked to the DB, I'll leave voting open til next Saturday :)

Saturday's over. ;)
Take a patience pill or something :).
Yep, busy weekend! It's almost impossible for me to update the html on the website at the moment but I will do that in the near future and make a more official announcement here about the winner tomorrow hopefully. Sorry it's all be off schedule again!
Ah, no worries. It's a great job you're doing, and I think we all appreciate it. Take your time; that gives ME the time to draw the cake sprite.
Sorry, I just got over-enthusiastic. 8)
But yeah, you're doing a great job. :)

A Barn Runner haiku! I don't think anyone has ever done that before. Neat!
- Ponch
Teh results are in, no more votes are being counted - and we have a winner! Hoorar!
Out of 104 votes, 4 of which said all the games on the list were great, the rest decided that.....
In
third place with 11% of the vote, congratulations to Ponch with...
BARN RUNNER 5!!!
In
second place with 17% of the vote, first year winner Crystal Shard wins again with
QUEST FOR YROLG!
And so in
first place with a massive 50% of the vote, Dan Marshall and Ben Ward with
BEN THERE, DAN THAT!!!
Well done Nanobots and Once Upon A Crime for coming joint 4th, both just a scratch away from winning 3rd place!!
Congratulations! Hoooraayyy! You will all be contacted in due course about your prizes & of course with details on the trophy for our first place winner! Comiserations to those who did not win, but many thanks for being a part of it. I hope plenty of designers have their games included next year!
I'll update this thread on news of which prizes people won/took and when the html page itself is updated, and hopefully with the photo of me giving Radiant his fantastic trophy from the 2007 awards. YAYA!

Big congrats to all the gamemakers. You all did fantastic job. :D
Sweet! Even better than that time I took second place in a beauty contest (though, come to think of it, that may have been in a Monopoly game).
Big congratulations to Crystal Shard, Dan Marshall and Ben Ward on their wins.
So, how does this work exactly? Is it like being in line for the Throne? If something terrible were to happen to those three, would I get the trophy? By something terrible, of course, I mean the sort of something in which they disappear without a trace and no evidence is left behind and the police have no leads to follow. Just asking. ;)
Thanks to everyone one who voted!
- Ponch
Congrats to the winner(s)- and I am actually very proud to see OUAC "on par" with Nanobots. Sweet!
Hi Ponch! Sadly the trophy is only available to the 1st place winner! But you and Radiant will both recieve a choice of AGS commercial games to pick one to win as your prizes. If the 1st place winners don't get back in touch (though I haven't got in touch with them just yet, I will do this weekend!) then the trophy will......well, I dunno :P Go into storage in a large warehouse in area 51 I guess ;)
Great news! Thanks, everyone, for setting up the awards and voting. It's good to know that after all the hard work, people are enjoying the game. Congrats too, to the other games on the list.
Looking forward to the trophy!
Ben Ward
Good job Ponch. Come to think of it 1 and 3rd place have their company logo based on Cows. Cow owns.
Just to let the winners know that I will be in touch next weekend about prizes. Take care!
Well, you gonna show those prizes in public as well?
Did we definitely win this, then?
NOT THAT I'M INTERESTED IN MATERIAL OBJECTS, obviously, it's just I've never won anything before.

I think so. Though I never heard anything from Mods.
Could be some sort of sinister plot. We all show up to collect our prizes and are never heard from again. But maybe I'm must paranoid that way.
- Ponch
Yes, I'm dead.
I'm also waiting on something.
I'll be in touch shortly :)
