I'm a big Sierra fan, and I was wondering: what are favourite Sierra series of the AGS members?
My favourite is the Space Quest series; great humour, wonderful atmosphere ('specially SQ4 & 5) and it's SF.
Gabriel Knight all the way. You go Gabe!
Quest for glory....
I still haven't played the 5th one though...I am currently playing the fourth on right now(replaying it, I've had it forever). But I'll tell ya, the first one was the best....
robin hood, conquests on the longbow. The game that got me into adventure gaming, and keeps me there.
I also highly enjoyed the middle games of the King's Quest seires, rather, 4-6. The ones before were too hard for, me and KQ7 sucked
hmm I was about 10 years old when KQ7 came out on the market, and I was really excited I can remember! I played the game for some time, ofcourse I didn't came any far, but I was amazed about the graphics, and I did love KQ7. You can't really place the style in the versions before 7, but still, It had some very good puzzles. (still never played it out... pretty hard game!)
Oh gosh... this one's hard. I like most of the Sierra series I've played, but for different reasons:
Gabriel Knight: awesome story telling
QFG: replayability x4!
SQ: soooo funny
KQ: endless story, great fantasy
That's a small example of why I like the different games. I don't think that I could actually pick a favourite. They're all too good!
P.S. to Squinky: Avoid QG5. It's almost nothing like the other games. It's more like a straight RPG than a hybrid, with references to old QFG randomly thrown in.
I love the Space Quest series. Especially SQIII. That's my favorite adventure game of all time!
The King's Quest series comes in a close second though.
I love the song Girl in the Tower from KQIV (I think). I have the mp3 and I listen to it all the time!
dm
Space Quest is my favourite series as it introduced me to adventure games when I was about 8. Also, you gotta love Leisure Suit Larry... which I only recently played for the first time, because I could never find it when I was younger.
Another Snake??2
Can two exist in the same community? PARADOX!!1
------------
Unfortunately I've never played any of the SQ games OR the QFG games...
If it counts, my favorite adventure game of all time is The Adventures of Willy Beamish...hell, Dynamix is part of the Sierra family, so it should count for something 8)
--Snake
Since theres two Squinkys, it's only fair....
Just make sure never to occupy the same space....or Marty McFly will freak out or something...
---**###Editorthingamahiggaroo##**---
And yeah, I'd played a demo of the qfg 5 and didn't enjoy it at all....but I have to play it...someday. Just like how I own MI4 and still can't bring myself to play it....
weird...
Yup, definitely the space quest series. Especially SQIII. I havn't played 6 yet, and only recently played the demo. It looked pretty good.
Heh, i was thinkin that about 2 snakes...
As far as Sierra series go, I like them all really. My favorite is definately QFG. I've always, always loved the graphics (in the first and second ones especially) and they were the ones with the coolest stories and they were a good example of combining a fighting system with an adventure game. I also adore Space Quest. So funny.
When comparing QFG5 to other 'recent' Sierra 3d adventure game efforts, it's really pretty good. I enjoyed a lot of the puzzles, and the story isn't terrible. I'd play it again.
King's Quest 8, however, made happy, hyperactive puppies sad. And lethargic.
And Squinky, if you do play MI4 with lowered expectations, it's good also. It'd be a nice, stand alone game, but it's no Monkey Island.
And finally, speaking of Dynamix, I just HAVE to plug Heart of China again. I LOVE that game.
I lied! I wasn't finished yet! Darth, where did you get the Girl in the Tower mp3? I must have it! My sister and I find the little tiny demo they had in the game completely hilarious.
Well, I'm no huge Sierra-fan, but I can say that I love all three of the Gabriel Knight games. Just incredible.
Definitely Quest For Glory. I only discovered it in the past year, and have AGA to thank. I played through the first three and enjoyed them hugely, haven't really got into the fourth yet. It looks fantastic but the Windows version is really annoying me with the forced windowed mode and having to switch colours and all that. I will do it though.
But so far, Quest For Glory II: Trial By Fire is probably now one of my 'top 10 adventure games ever'. The whole story, feel, and look of the game is brilliant, there's really a lot of depth to it. Very cool game.
I find the other Sierra series more patchy - e.g. King's Quest 6 is really good but then there's King's Quest 7, which is really pretty bad. I think Tierra's KQ2+ VGA has to be the best KQ I played actually. But it's Sierra's basic premise that they built on so I'm not slagging off Sierra.
QfG II and IV are two of the finest Sierra adventures ever made.
Pesty: I have Heart of China, remind me on IRC next time I see you and I'll DCC it. You can
get Girl in the Tower here: http://www.shaftnet.org/quest/gitt.mp3 (linked from www.queststudios.com )
Pestilence - Let me know if you have trouble downloading Girl in the Tower from AGA's link. If so, I'll set it up on my server for you! I love that song.
I think I'm going to dl the Quest for Glory games. I've never played them but people seem to really like them.
Also the Monkey Island games. I've never (if you can believe it) played them either.
dm
1. Quest for Glory
2. Gabriel Knight
3. Leisure Suit Larry
4. Space Quest
5. King's Quest
Quest for Glory is my favorite. Great stories, you can play each games 3 times because of the differnt hero classes.
mmm, sierra...
the qfg series are definately the best (i didn't play the 5th though). the rpg elements, the non-linearity, the construction and above all the unique atmosphere put those games among the best i've ever played.
my favorite is probably qfg2. it's the only one i played oldskool style - because when i tried qfg1, i went for the vga version instead.
and i didn't enjoy qfg3 as much as the others, for some reason.
i have a special place in my heart for kq5, because that was the first adventure game i ever played on my own (ie. instead of watching my father play).
other than that, i'm not a big fan of the kq series.
i had never had the opportunity to play any sq game until recently, but i found sq1 so annoying that i didn't finish it, and haven't played any other sq game.
and i didn't really enjoy the lsl games. not that they were particularly bad, but i never got interested.
Long live phantasmagoria and Gabriel Knight, for they shall be hailed as rulers of the known gaming universe forever and ever, amen.
Nostradamus: You can play three of them four times. You forgot about the Paladin class! It doesn't change QGIII all that much, but there's whole storylines and characters you never see if you aren't playing Paladin. I can't really remember if there was a difference in Dragon Fire, but there are whole bunch of new skills that the Paladin has, so there might be some story change.
Speaking of qfg...
Anybody happen to know the potion formulas for qfg 4? I own the game but have lost the copyprotection codes.....

This is a great site for any game or program if you have lost the manual:
http://www.replacementdocs.com/
I searched for "quest for glory" it came up with:
Quest for Glory Anthology & Quest for Glory V, so it may be in the anthology one, I'm d/l it at the moment, 9MB and the site is really slow, about the speed of a dial-up.
I'll edit the post if I get the answer from it, otherwise, there's the link, it's a great link, worth keeping for future reference.
Edit: Yep, the codes were there, I think this is what you need:

QFG2. The all time greatest. I still never played 5 though.
Well i actually never was found of Sierra, I'm the LEC type, but recently i have downloaded Jones in the fast lane and LSL 3 and 6, tho i didnt like the interface in the LSL i'll try Jones... we'll see :)
I liked Jones very much.. I used to play it with my brother and two sisters.. Lots of fun..
The Laura Bow series is one of my favorites, I guess the Dagger of Amon Ra more than the first. It had a better story anyway. LSL is great also, but just the first three, the others were kind of dumb, but amusing in their own sort of way. LSL3 was my favorite, it's so great! I think that game has some of my favorite copy protection stuff. Follow the bouncing fruit!
Thanks Timosity, I'll be able to get some potions now I guess...
Now I just need to find something to slow down my computers speed so it dosen't freak out in some parts...
The best game (that I've played) by Sierra of all time? Quest for Glory IV. Simply for the atmosphere. It MADE me fear going out at night and having to face the crap out there, in the game that is. It was realistic, yet fantasty at the same time. The characters were so well drawn and realized that I fell in love with the game instantly.
After that, the Space Quest series for its humor, sci-fi-ness, and great series storyline. Then King's Quest for the same reason. They're all great.
gabriel knight rocks !!!!
I am one of the biggest sierra fnas here, so here goes:
King's quests: They have always been revolutionary to the gaming world. My favourites are 3-7, and tierra's remakes. KQ8 sucked.
Quests for glory: Great replayability, my favourite one is "Shadows of darkness", though I ever finished it because of my buggy version.
Gabriel Knights: Awesome story-telling, which causes me not to see the border between reality and fiction. Also, the best music in an adventure game, by Robert Holmes.
Leisure Suit Larrys: Great humour, nice puzzles. My fave were 2,3 and 7
Conquests: Maybe the best historically based games ever. I like the non-linearity in conquests of the longbow.
Space quests: Without a doubt, sq3 is the best. Wonderful humour, original puzzles. Also, the plot of sq3 is hillarious.
Gold Rush: This is one of the first non-linear games. I love it - it has strong plot, nice puzzles and the atmosphere is just great. Sad there isnt a sequel.
Laura bows: I liked the first more, because it is more innovative. The second one is also good, but it is too much of a regular adventure.
eco quests: Wonderful games, though less-know. I plyed them when I was about 11. These are THE educational games I like.
Police quests: Good games, very realistic in my opinion.
Manhunters: Great games, though they may seem weird to some of you.
I also like Freddy pharkas a lot, because of the outstandingly funny atmosphere.
I am much older than you. I lived these days at my adolescence when the adventures rule. (29 years old)
I'm a huge Sierra and Lucas Adv Fan
For me the bests are:
1)GK Series
2)Larry Series
3)Police Quest Ser.
4)Heart of China
5) Conquest of Camelot
6)Codename Iceman
All of them w/o arcade sessions. Because arcade in adventures sucks. I like pure adventures
I'm not exactly the biggest Sierra fan around, but I've always loved the Gabriel Knight and Quest for Glory games. If I had to choose one series, it'd be the GK one, but I still haven't played QFG2 and 4 (which most people consider the best in the series), so I can't say for sure.
For me, Sierra will always be in the shadows of allmighty LucasArts, but nonetheless I've enjoyed quite a few of their titles:
Laura Bow: The Colonel's Bequest was the first adventure game I ever played (on my friend's Amiga 500), and although I haven't played it since I think it was a very decent game. And being my first adventure game it will always have a special place in my ..eeh.. mind.
The LSL series were quite hilarious, although they kept getting poorer until they finally decided to end it all. The first ones were great, but if you replace the locations and babes there weren't much of a difference really.
I really enjoyed the Gabriel Knight games too, which had great stories. That is the first two games of course, number three I REALLY HATE! I think GK3 is very much too blame for the lack of "newcomers" to the adventure genre, coz if it had been my first adventure game I really don't think I would've been tempted to try another one. In my opinion, an adventure game is supposed to give you a rewarding feeling when you solve the puzzles, but instead I ripped out most of my hair... (EDIT: Not that it is too hard or anything, I just don't share Jane Jensen's sense of logic (super-strength scotch tape) ::) )
But hey, it could be just me.... :-\
my favorite is Kings Quest 4. The graphics were a welcome change at the time, and i just loved everything about it. I think the music was great too.
My favs are:
Gabriel Knight 2 and 3
Leisure Suit Larry 2
Police Quest (all of em) but number 4 is a bit of a let down (no Jim Walls)
Phantasmagoria 2
Space Quest 3 and 4
I guess I prefer the lucas arts style interface, but I played SQ4 (my first adventure game) Before any lucas arts games, so it never really bothered me at the time, cause I didn't know of any other interfaces :P And I can't see someone hating a great game cause of the interface, when it has so many other strengths. Heres my list.
1. Space Quest series (First I ever played, and ive always been a huge fan, my fave is SQ4)
2. Quest for Glory
3. KQ
oh man, i forgot about Gold Rush. That was one awesome game back then, and how much i would love to play it again. Next to KQ4, i would have to say that Gold Rush is my favorite Sierra Adventure Game.
SQUiNKY:
QuoteI own the game but have lost the copyprotection codes.....
Don't lie, you bought it at SAM'S CLUB (hence the loss for code)!!!11!!!111!!!

NOTE: for some spooky reason I'd rather not know what everyone looks like here except for your avatars...har
Like for example, I'd rather know ESSEB as that funny parrot smoking a cigar than what he really looks like....weird...
lol
I always pictured you looking like Scott Bakula...lol
(http://www.honeybat.com/pictures/scott/sam1.jpg)
You bastard....heh...
I'm glad that the showing of my pic causes you to mention how you never, ever wanna see a pic of an agser again....
I am an abomination....heh
---edit-----
And yes my cd is buggy also, sometimes it just stops up when the voice acting comes on, other times it dosen't finish the voice file properly....don't even get me started on the cherynoble wizard thingys...
Stupid 16-bit win 3.1 programs never work in XP no matter how hard you try. It's like trying to get cd rip version of Dark Seed 2 to work..LoL
