Sierra is.... alive?

With sierra announcing a new LSL adventure with Al Lowe involved, I think that we can think that there is still hope that sierra will return to its glory days. There are two conclusions:
1. Buy the new LSL game to support the genre - it really matters
2. Petitions DO matter - Al Lowe was not involved in the beginning of the project, but it seems that there are also smart people in sierra who listen to the fans. Did you sign the petition? I did.^_^

The future for sierra? If the new LSL sells well, they will probably revive the other "Quest" series, which would rock if the original creators did them. Time will tell.

i don't want to buy it cause i don't really like LSL

and i urge everyone else not to buy it if the game is crap, none of this "but it's an adventure game and they need our support"

I think adventur games is raising from the dead, cause i read in a magazine that lucas arts was going to make a new sam n max adventure and another game i donÂ´t remember(maybe grim fandango 2?)
and the petition didnÂ´t really work

There're also (conflicting) rumors viz. a new Zork game. I think, though, internal politics (Ken Love vs. Laird Malamed I think) are snarling things up. Be interesting to see if anything happens here, though.

Don't forget BSIII, either.

I thoguht LSL was funny, but not my favourite adventure, but I s'pose I am a loyal LE fan through thick and thin...

I probably will buy it, and am glad that the genre is finally resurecting itself. I don't really think the adventure genre was dead, just merely hibernating and occasionally came out to retrieve its nuts...

If a game isn't worth buying, you shouldn't buy it.

I also noticed though, that adventure games seem to be creeping back a tiny bit. Whether they'll be successful is another story altogether, but it would seem people are at least trying to launch a few onto the market.

There are also other titles, but I suspect they're not all true adventure games. I think the definition of the genre has been greatly widened since the good old Point and Click days.

I think these statements are very presumptuous, and extremely unlikely. For one thing, Sierra has already stated that they have no desire or plan to make adventure games for adventure fans. That's not to say adventure fans won't ENJOY them, but their goal right now is to appeal to a much more mainstream audience and that isn't going to happen with traditional adventures. And regarding Sierra's other series, I think that their creators have been so disenfranchised from Sierra that the chances are almost nil. Most of them don't seem to have much desire to begin working with Sierra again, and the ones that do seem more interested in making traditional adventures, which we know isn't going to happen at that company. Al Lowe's involvement will probably be more as a consultant or anything, and we know for a fact he won't be present in some sort of "designer" role unless things are severely reorganized.

Jane Jensen. Project Jane-J (there were copyright conflicts with the original name, so right now it has no name) is being released Christmas next year.

*insert excited happy noises here*

I, however, am wary of trusting Sierra. I'm not going to buy the new LSL game right away: I've been burned a few too many times- QG5 and KQ8 leap to mind- for me to be rushing to unthinkingly buy any random adventure that Sierra produces. I'm going to wait and see.

I'll consider buying it. I dont care how much they change it. if it looks like its a fun game, and it gets good reviews i'll buy it. I dont really give a whores sandwich that larry laffer is not the main character. He was getting too old anyway. the joke was running thin.

And on that note, i saw an ad for Broken Sword 3 in Ralph magazine this month. Ralph is like a guys magazine, not porno. Like FHM.

And in PC Powerplay, they have a monthly designer diary of BS3, which is great.

And the editor of Hyper (biggest multiplatform games mag in oz), abosolutly loves adventure games.

The people are out there. We are not so much a minority, there just havent been many good game choices in the past 6 years.

Larry isn't the greatest way to bring adventures back from the dead.

I'd prefer to see a third Maniac Mansion game, or another Gabe Knight sequel.

Sure Larry has some funny bits, but they're more so funny in a "Wow, how 80s." kinda way.

I think that's sort of the reason they chose to revive that license more than, for example, MM or GK. With Larry you don't really have to live up to a certain standard of storytelling that you would in a sequel to DOTT or GK3 (please, no flames for this--we're talking about LARRY here). It's also an M-rated franchise (according to Sierra's rep, the new game will likely be M), which in all honestly will be much easier to market. With Larry, Sierra will theoretically be able to attract the old adventure gamers, the mainstream "mature" audience, the kids who want to see boobies, and the people who just get kicks out of dirty games. I probably sound pretty cynical here, but I honestly believe this is the reason Vivendi would choose to bring back Larry. Obviously Sierra has other series which are much more representative of what adventure gaming could be; as is probably obvious, I think this whole situation has nothing to do with wanting to resurrect the adventure game, Vivendi just figures it's a license that'll probably make some money.

I never played LSL at all in its original versions, but I did recently beta test Timosity's LSL3 remake and helped a bit with the mirror scripting. Now, apart from the fact that it doesn't paly too well in Windowed mode rather than full-screen, I really didn't enjoy the game a great deal. I don't want to take anything away from Timosity's hard work becuase it appaears to have been a great effort and I admire the scripting and everything that has gone in to it, but I'm sorry I just didn't like the game much! It wasn't funny or titilating or engrossing or absorbing for me.

So I doubt that I'll buy a commerical one.

On the other hand, I prefer Phantasmagoria 2 to Syberia, so what do I know?
