Hey guys, I wanted some game suggestions... when I was wee lad of a bout 4 or 5ish... I was bitten by the adventure game bug... I even remember going out and buying "King's Quest 5" from an average commercial video game store... and amazed at how great everything looked... except that fuckin desert puzzle... and I remember being a bit perturbed by the import of Verb Coin system in Monkey Island 3... because it was so different and also a bit strange to hear Guybrush speak after all these years... adventure gaming is an obsession that only grew... and i've over the years collected quite a library... and was wondering if anyone could suggest any games I haven't played or own... Here is a complete list of games I've bought and collected over the years

I have heard of Willy Beamish here and there.. is it any good?

Also... I've been meaning to get a hold of the Gabriel Knight series... and I know its a trilogy as it stands (Tho there are plans apparently from Jane Jensen to make another one next year)... but I wanna know if there was ever a pack released that had all 3 games... because the most I could find was talk of a pack which was a compilation of first 2 games... which would mean  two different purchases, because i'd have to first by the double pack.. and THAN number 3... and I'm a uni student so i'm strapped for cash... so compliation packs are usually more financially viable...

Babar

I do not see any of the Quest for Glory series in your list...and while it wasn't purely adventure, it'd be a shame to miss it just because of some action sequences.

Another good Sierra one would be Conquest of Longbow, and maybe Conquest of Camelot (although I was never able to finish that). Other than that...Woodruff and Schibble?

Some non-Sierra ones would be Eric the Unready, Future Wars, and.....
bah...just check these out:

It is one of the best in my eyes and is certainly a great inspiration to me, game-play-wise. As a kid I would put on my backpack and walk around picking up various items, finding places and situations I could use them in, heh, sometimes pretending I was Willy in a sequel.

The game was, actually, what opened my eyes a bit more about various paths that you can take and the outcomes of your actions in real life. As a little kid you don't think about that stuff, post doing something completely stupid of course, then wishing you hadn't. I always wondered why more games don't have this Choose Your Own Adventure book feel to them.

Willy Beamish gave me a feeling of being able to do almost anything I wanted to. I loved just wandering around the house and reading the descriptions for everything and ignoring what I was supposed to be doing, waiting for the outcome.

It is nostalgic for me. Playing it for the first time as an adult, I can't help you there ;) It is a good game in a whole. Give it a try, anyway, and see if you like it. If you can find it to buy, I suggest the talkie!

If you've yet to try them, some to consider would be Machinarium, So Blonde, Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, Insecticide and The Whispered World, I guess.

The presence of Zack & Wiki indicates your ownership of a Wii, in which case I'd suggest having a look at Another Code: R - A Journey Into Lost Memories (A little slow and simple, but I liked it).

Edit: Also, try some commercial AGS stuff. For the fan of comedic adventures there is Time Gentlemen Please (And Ben There, Dan That! is free; I really liked both of thse games), Super Jazz Man (which I really liked despite the fact that it is kinda unknown these days) and Puzzlebots, for the fan of drama there are the Blackwell games and if you want horror, perhaps try Downfall. I'm pretty sure they all have demos as well!

Suprisingly... I just got blackwell the other day... and i've played the first "Ben there dan that"... I always meant to get around to time gentleman please... but i usually have too much work to do... (I'm currently writing a book on the history and eptimology of folklore Creature myths such as vampires, werewolves etc.).... as well as working as a close up magician and stand up (work is sparce in both... stand up comedy has 99% unemployyment.. and magic 99%... so i'm 98 % unemployable.... and have a degree in theatre as a scholar, historian and writer which i will probably never use)...  but when i get the the time I love a good adventure... probably the thing that made me go into theatre as a degree... and developed my humor to make me the stand up... i should be in advert "Adventure games changed my life!"

Also I played most of your games Ben... I especially loved Eternally Us... that game was just so poetically beautiful... Almost in a Samuel Beckett poetic style (tho not quite as dark)... I loved how it was so creative and outside the box.. and it all made sense in the end... it was truly an artistic piece... and i also loved awakener... short and funny... very clever.. but one thing i noticed... is you seem to use the number "1984" in  your games a lot.. any particular reason...  It was in "Hope" and I think I also saw it in "eternally us"

ThreeOhFour

The number 1984 in Hope is a reference to a novel called 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' by George Orwell. Beckett was most definitely an influence for Steve when he was doing the dialogue for Eternally Us - particularly the play 'Play'. Thanks for the nice words :)

Back on topic, perhaps you should add the Blackwell games to your list (and any other downloadable only ones) so as to avoid suggestions of games that you've already purchased and played.

strangechicken

Yeah man.. Beckett is the man... he's kinda where I kinda specialise in theatre.. Beckett and Dadaism (I'm not a big fan of realism... It's very dull and no where near what theatre CAN be)... so I saw the influence... it was very VERY nicely done.. and thats coming from me who almost worships Sammy B... you would not believe how many bad Beckett Tributes i've seen... I once saw one who did a sequel to "Breathe" but with Christmas music... talk about missing the concept completely... Beckett's work is about.. does god exist, or are we eternally alone... so to add christmassy music... thats way off... fuckin film students.. never bother to learn their subject matter :\.. But your integration was awesome...  have you ever read "Rockaby"... i'd suggest it if you haven't.. for me its extremely poignant... and from the "Eternally Us" I reckon you'd get a kick out of it... but yes... excellent work.. keep it up

I'll refine.. I don't want people to list every game they can think off off the top of their head... I've played many a bad adventure game... and after playing as many as I have... it becomes instantly blindingly obvious when your playing a bad adventure game... I want good quality things... not the bottom of the barrel scraped for any random title...  and I'm not one for "Quest for glory"... I usually like my adventure as is... straight up adventure... I wasn't much of a fan of the RPG style of QFG... but thats just me...

You people should stop teasing Harg about the barrel thing. It has gone too far.

LOL :) That was good Ascovel :)

strangechicken, I'm not a wizzard. I don't know what type of adventures you like. Why don't you ask about a meal for dinner? We will give you options YOU will choose.

strangechicken

lets just say i'm a harsh critic when it comes to professional stuff BUT I can look at things in retrospect... You seen my list up there... I must like those games to spend money on them, no!? so if I were to give you a list of foods I liked and loved... you'd presumably cater more towards what is the most common theme of those items generally... if i say i liked chicken burgers.. you wouldn't give me a vegitarian tofu salad just because its on your mind eh!?

Iliya

You gave us a BIG list of games. And there are games created in 80s and also created in 20XX. So you didn't gave us any game for example. Why don't you say - "Hey, is there a good game like Syberia, ot good game like SF: Tunguska". You posted a catalog of games and we give you more games.

does age or graphics make it a better or worse game?... as i've said many time... I dont' dismiss a good film because the costumes are shit... as long as the stories decent i'm there...

I'm not much a fan of the modern rehash adventure (Tales of monkey island etc.)... because... to quote one such ags game "Ben there, Dan That"... I like something historical... (Broken Sword (one of my favorite games ever))... or mythical (IE. King's Quest, Longest Journey -tho not as fuckin long winded with the dialogue as Longest Journey-)...  also humorous and quirky (LSL, Space Quest, Toonstruck (One of my favorite games EVER!), THE original monkey island)...

I don't mind the odd thing like Phantasmagoria or Harvester... just to see what they're about.. and i know people pan Phantasmagoria, I actually enjoyed that.. people claim it was too cheesy and cliche... as if Roberta's other games such as the King's Quest series were highly original in storyline... but I have to agree.. the second one was just bad, not even so bad its good... just bad... totally convuluted and stupid...

I also tho many despise them... Don't mind the direct control games (Broken Sword 3, In Cold Blood, Grim Fandango, Dreamfall)... it gives me a break from "click yourself silly" point and click adventures...

Hopefully gives you a bit of an idea

Babar

I'd still recommend Conquest of Longbow, and since you said you like historical, Conquest of Camelot. As I said, Camelot was fairly difficult for me (think of it as having the traditional level of adventure game difficulty for that time :D ), but it was immensely rich and atmospheric.

And I'd also still recommend Eric the Unready. Just because everyone should've played that game.

Awesome.. I also don't mind a challenge... tho it resulted in many headache, tears, and a lot of pain.. I actually completed King's Quest 3...  god that game was a right pain in the *ZOUNDS*... I actually liked when they're harder... you feel so much more amazing and acomplished having beaten i...  I don't however too add to  a few  tihngs.. like first person adventure games as a rule... I like my stuff 3rd person... I find it more my style.. also i'd comment on the bizzarity of people not liking the controler type games like "Broken Sword 3" and "Dreamfall"... because its kind of a "neo-text parsor" system goes back to stuff like the original Sierra quest games... they were all in a way, direct control (Arrow keys and typing)... so if anything its more neo-nostalgic than anything really new or scary...

Hey man, we gave to at least 15 or 20 games. Did you checked them all? For example: Did you checked "Machinarium"? It's really great.
