I have investigated copyright laws on the internet and I think i know what the answer is on this one, but i am not quite sure.   Anyways, in my game 90% of the graphics I,ve drawn are from scratch.   Although, I have used (as tools) other peoples .gif's to get an idea how to animate certain things.   Okay, I'll get to the point.   One of my rooms has a number of creepy paintings on the wall.  The images that I used for the paintings are actually Rembrant painints of old men I've pushed the pixels on them and have manipulated them quite a bit.   I read something about...blah..blah...before 1923...it becomes public domain material.   I don't know anything about laws applying to famous works of art.  Am I doing something illegal here if so I'll put a stop to it immediately.   Any help would be appreciated.

You'll be fine.
The only copyright problem might be not the actual paintings but the copyright on the photographs you used of the paintings. But theoretically you could visit the museums yourself and take the photos yourself to use. And besides, you've altered them anyway.

Don't worry about it.

That, and the chances of anyone seeing the pictures who has the copyright (which in this case, I'm sure no one has), is very small. You could put something in your read-me to cover your a**, though. As long as the game is free, I see no problem, it's when you start making money, that copyright laws are more likely to be enforced.

Hey, sorry for replying so late and thanks for clearing this matter up for me.
See, I originally had the idea that I was going to sell my first game (after months of working on a project it seems a pretty tempting idea).  I believe, now, that  the best thing to do is to put one out there and see how folks respond to it.  Also, to contribute something to the community and to Chris Jones who cannot receive enough praise for this amazing bit of work.
