Title: Suggestions for a new adventurer?
Post by: Iris on Wed 15/04/2009 20:49:00
Hey, I'm relatively new to Big Blue Cup. While I've played a few games, I wanted to hear any suggestions for Big Blue Cup's best games. I've played all three kings quest remakes, quest for glory 2, the apprentice, Ben Jordan, A Tale of Two Twins, Pleasburg, and a Tale of Two Kingdom (all the ones I can think of off the top of my mind). Any suggestions of where I should go now (I tried 5 days a stranger and didn't like it. So no horror games)?

Barely a few good ags horror games there. I say you find Ben304 and try all his games.

Yeah, Ben's Shifter's Box was really fun.

I liked all the Ben Jordan series also (which you have listed already).

Oh, and Chatroom was an interesting game.  Something very different.  I enjoyed that one.

SSH made a great fighting simulator, which I used to play for hours. It was Roger vs. Roger or something.

Reactor 09, Cedric and the Revolution, Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy, Once Upon a Crime, Hillbilly Burger Bastards (you'll have to look hard to find it  :'(), Ben There, Dan That! and some others that I've forgotten or have been mentioned here.

Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy gets my vote. Best AGS game I've played in years.

Nelly Cootalot
Charlie Foxtrot and the Galaxy of Tomorrow (not the best graphics and sound, bear in mind..)
Cirque du Zale (if you can find it...)
Nanobots

And for a non adventure game Trilby: The Art of Theft was very slick. (Sorry for dragging Yahtzee back into this..)

Annie Android is a good one if you're short on time.  And if you're looking for something more obscure, you might like Escape from Evergreen Forest.

EDIT:  And how could I forget Other Worlds?  If you can get past the graphics, it's a fun one.

I'd add Hallway of Adventures (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=729) and Duty and Beyond (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=747).

First is short, lavishly illustrated, dark and misty; second... well, look at the comments: "It's games like this that make me want to make my own games with AGS. Fantastic!".

edit: both of them are by the very talented Mordalles.

About every 2-3 months or so someone shows up asking for someone else to tell them what they should play, and my answer is always the same:

1.  Go here:  http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?refresh1240176724

2.  Select a genre you like most (comedy, horror, investigative) and search for a list of those games.

3.  You can now either:

     A.  Select one at random and form your own opinion.

     or

     B.  Use the player and judge panel ratings as a guide for which games to check out first.

Really, there are too many fun games for them all to be listed here, and you're always going to hear the same 4 or so each time one of these threads show up.  Do a little work yourself and you're bound to find gems nobody mentioned.  Hell, you might even enjoy games that other people haven't.

Which reminds me, Minds Eye was one of my favourites. I'd take a look at that.

Cheers Progz  ;)

OP said they didn't like 5Days and, by extension, horror so that would be a negative.

Personally I think the series is a little overrated. Trilby's Notes is the only one I consider a truly great game.

I recommend the games I started with: the three episodes of Melrin (sp) by Joacim Andersson. Extremely well done, all three scored in the low 80's for overall enjoyment.

That concludes this lesson on the importance of actually reading stuff on the internet.

I bet there are a lot of things you don't understand in this world. ;)
Not everyone can like those DeFoe games, for example I have never played any of those games. There just is nothing in those games that interest me enough to download and try them.
