Title: Super Jazz Man Graphics
Post by: Trickster on Sun 23/12/2012 16:35:31
After looking through all the forums I'm not certain where the best place to post this topic would be, so I chose T&C as the "safest" place to attempt a question.

I'm running Super Jazz Man on Windows 7.  It's fine when windowed, but if I try to run it fullscreen, the graphics are just horrible: shades of brown instead become bright hues across the spectrum, as though it were 16 color rather than 256 color.  Is this a known issue?  Is there a workaround so I can play it in fullscreen?  I've tried setting Windows to 256-color compatibility, but this changes nothing.  My monitors are 1920 by 1080 native but support a wide array of resolutions.

This is the only AGS-produced game I have played that has this problem, and I have a few dozen installed.

Thanks in advance for any advice.  :)

Addendum.

There IS one other AGS game in my collection that has this problem: Trilby's Notes.  Oddly, for both authors (Yahtzee, and whoever did SJM I forget at the moment), all their other games work fine without the graphical bug in fullscreen.

They are both older games, probably made with version 2.72 or earlier, and you're using Windows 7, so the issue *might* be  what's covered in this thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=46598.0).

YES!  Using the Russian program worked!

This should REALLY be in a wiki somewhere, along with an extra copy of that zip in case it disappears from the internet.  :/  I also had to discover a couple things on my own, so I might as well share them.

In short, here's how it works.  Add the contents of dxwnd_og.rar to the directory that has your executable, and then configure TWO setups: launch.exe, and the usual winsetup.exe (the info didn't mention that but they need to match, but they do or it flips out).  Set winsetup.exe to fullscreen at 640 x 400/480 (choose letterbox for 480 if not grayed out).  Set launch.exe by checking all the boxes in the Video frame, setting Surfaces to System, and leaving Resolution as (auto).  That does the trick for both games!

Thanks so much!  :D

Now if I could only figure out how to get Safrosoft RoX to run under Windows 7, as it explodes when attempting to create a DirectX 8 object.  :P

I should add that I found a third program that needs this workaround.  That brings the total to:

Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment
Super Jazz Man
Trilby's Notes

Thanks. Perhaps Peder or AGA can store this important zip file on the AGS server if it's going to be useful for quite some time.

There are probably a lot of other affected games, but I only play the ones with the highest ratings or lots of awards (or done by the same author as other games I've played).
