That's right! I doubt anyone has ever made a board game before in AGS. I might be wrong. But my new pet project (while By the Sword is on hold for a short amount of time) is AGS-opoly (or AGS Monopoly)!
What IS AGSopoly, you ask? Well, simply put, it's Monopoly (the famous American board game of property buying and trading) with AGS Games as the properties. In addition, the railroads are plugins, and the utilities are Mittens and the AGS Forums.
This will be an open source project, and anybody can add to it once I release it. Basically, it will be the entire game, trading and all, except there will be no computer AI players, only human players. And it isn't online-multiplayer just yet. Anyone who wishses to do so can add a TCP/IP feature or AI (if they so choose).
Basically, Computer AI is too hard for my skills when it comes to Monopoly. The AI has to determine if a proposed trade is in their favor or not, and has to have the option of setting up a trade on its own, as well as auctioning, etc. It's too hard for me to do, but maybe somebody else can do it.
So far I have 22 games (the highest of which isn't really a game at all) for the 22 properties in Monopoly. They are as follows, in order from least to most value (see note below)...
Purple: Mourir en Mer ("To Die at Sea"), Moose Wars
Teal: 5 Days a Stranger, Odysseus Kent, Bestowers of Eternity
Violet: SOL, Night of the Hermit, The Uncertainty Machine
Orange: Little Jonny Evil, 6 Day Assassin, Robert Redford Saves the Day
Red: The Adventures of Fatman, Permanent Daylight, The Journey Home
Yellow: Apprentice, Rode Kill: A Day in the Life, Rob Blanc (trilogy)
Green: Larry Vales (trilogy ;)), Pleurghburg: Dark Ages, King's Quest VGA
Blue: The [Entire]Reality-on-the-Norm Series, AGS 3.0 Source Code!
Railroads/Plugins: agsCreditz, Flashlight, Parallax Scrolling, Snow-Rain
Utilities: Mittens, AGS Forums
Heh. So yeah, a note: The purple spaces are considered by some to be the crappy streets on the Monopoly board and considered low. MeM and MW are NOT, IMO, the "worst" AGS games. On the contrary: I hand-picked the 21 best games (or trilogies/series) I could think of. First, I picked the "classics" or legends in the AGS world, like Pleurghburg and Larry Vales. Then, I picked the rest based on rating in the AGS Games directory.
I apologize if your game didn't make it and you feel that yours is better than some of those listed above. That's just tough crap. Make your own damn AGS Monopoly. :P You don't see "By the Sword" listed up there, do ya? ;)
Well, what I kinda need is people's permissions to use their games' name(s) in AGS Monopoly. People like Phil Reed and Yahtzee who don't regularly (or at all) visit the forums I will PM/IM/email, of course, but if you made any of the above games and are reading this, please give me permission! This project will NOT be sold. Again, it will be open source and free for all. :)
Finally, more details. "Go" will instead be "Restore the Game", Free Parking will be "Free Posting", and Jail will instead be Hell. :P Again, since this is open-source, anyone can change any of the graphics. I will also be commenting my code, as well as creating a tutorial that explains what steps I took in creating AGS Monopoly.
Rich.
I didn't read all of this, but it's a good idea anyway, so go for it!
I love the idea, but make Jail "Walking Dead" instead.
I always thought monopoly was Brittish :o
is it origionally American?!?!?! I'd be pretty surprised!
Of course it's American, all of the properties are in Atlantic City, and why would the British make a game with streets like "Connecticut Avenue" and what not...
http://www.hasbro.com/monopoly/pl/page.history/dn/default.cfm
i have too much time on my hands.
Yeah, it was invented by an American named Charles Darrow (see here (http://www.adena.com/adena/mo/mo02.htm))
EDIT: The British version has all the locations in London, so that's probably why Archy and Mostly were confused.
oh, i did not know that. I just assumed it was the same everywhere.
I assume every localized versions have their own street names. The Swedish version I have uses street names from Stockholm, for instance.
do you have to pay with onion-rings in AGS-opoly
Check sourceforge: there's already about 300 open-source monopoly projects, some of which are actually working. Not that I want to stop you, but there's no point re-inventing the wheel.
On the other hand, AGS Pokemon would be cool... check out that old photoshop phriday
Point well taken, SSH. However...are any of them coded and made in Adventure Game Studio?
I thought not. ;)
Esseb: Good idea! I'll make Jail the Walking Dead, or even Dead End, to suit most AGSers out there. :P
I was going to use regular money (U.S. dollars however). Anybody who so chooses can make it so that the player can choose the currency, like US Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, etc. :)
So how long will this delay BTS by, then? ;)
I'm not sure why you need to do it in AGS, other than:
a) Trying to win the Roger for Best Non-Adventure Game
b) Sheer perversity
c) Not having any other development tools
I swear to God that we've discussed this before, I even did a search on these forums back to October of 2002... and I can't find the topic... kinda bugs me. I only found one page of proof, but very little of it.
http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=7994;start=msg98757#msg98757
I can't remember who the original person doing it was, but I make a reference to the game. I wish I had mentioned who had started it before.
anyways, carry on with your conversations
Free Parking can be Mittens, and all the stations can be different forums?
Well, my idea was this:
Railroads = Plugins
Utilties = Mittens and the Forums
Chance = Random Event
Community Chest = Player's Inventory
Free Parking = Free Posting
Jail = Dead End (or walking dead)
Houses = Demos Released
Hotel = Final Release
Oh, and if anybody wants to see what it looks like so far, click here: http://sky.prohosting.com/harbsoft/agsopoly_nm.zip
All it has is an intro screen, the board display, two status GUIs, and a pop-up menu GUI. Now, can someone explain why the cursor changes to a hand when you move the mouse off of the popup GUI? :P (I can workaround it, of course, and I don't expect an answer to that on this forum.)
terranRICH, I think this is a great idea. What are the tokens going to look like? Are you going to use the heads of AGSers?
Umm...I could've sworn I replied to this thread. Hmm... Well, I'm going to try and use AGSers' heads and even famous AGS characters (Vales, Blanc, Kill, McUrk) for game pieces, and even Roger's head and the famous Blue Cup (in the AGS start menu). There are only a few recognizable AGSers around here (CJ, Andail, Helm, Rodekill, m0ds (?) to name a few). For now, I'm using colored spheres as game pieces until I can get the heads squared away.
ANyway, now it's on to scripting...a hellacious task... :P
Make it with the AGS characters! (Trying out my hypnotic skill) Or i shall show you my weiner!1!1
Interestingly, monopoly was created to illustrate the backside of capitalism; how the rich get richer etc.
Just a sidenote.
Oh, and
QuoteThere are only a few recognizable AGSers around here (CJ, Andail, Helm, Rodekill, m0ds (?) to name a few).
I am flattered! That more than makes up for not having my games in the street-section :)
All I saw were two games by you. I guess I ignored the games without a rating, and kinda just rushed it by putting in what I thought were classics, then what I thought were the best games. I don't know, I did rush it though, and this isn't meant as a judgment on games, just a template for a board game made with AGS that didn't copy the original completely. :)
But yeah, i consider you recognizable, mainly because of Mittens pics and your avatar(s) of yourself. Who else would be considered recognizable by many?
Me! Me! Me!
/me waves and jumps around
¬_¬ ::)
Yeah... right...
But I like this idea very much. :) I even started thinking of modifications I would like to do to monopoly, and now, when you finnish this, I can do that :) :) :)
Could you insert bonuscharacters, that you get after you win? Like Guybrush threepwood, or Larry Vales sideburns! <- Replay Value!
