The Name of The Game

Lately I've been heavily advised to change my project's name 'Epoch'. Since there is already a different-genre game with this title, the legal trouble I may go through would be more of a trouble than saving artistic integrity. I came up with the name 'Epoch' months after the game's general idea. I was actually still developing anastrønaut II back then.

I got very attached to the name. But I can't seem to be able to do anything about it, I feel it must be changed. I already got my second best choice which will be announced on the next GiP update. What are your thoughts and opinions about the issue of having duplicate names for the sake of art, not commercial fraud?

That's a bit unfortunate. There are games that have the same name as other completely unrelated games, but they're usually a lot older whereas this other Epoch is also a current project. Regardless of any legal issue, you'll have a Google war on your hands if you kept the same name, so you're definitely better off changing it to something more Google-able.

Hi AnasAdbin,
I'm not sure about your case now, since your game is already on Steam Greenlight, so changing names could maybe be risky - but if I were you, I would definitely change the name of my game.

The way I name my games is the opposite of what is advised and suggested.
Most people say that it should be short. But I believe that it is very hard to name something in a short word, because almost everyone names everything that way. Hence, it's not really original.
Though, there are some rules, which should still be followed, but if you think outside of the box, your work will be more original and more personal. It would feel as if, even if it is unsuccessful, whatever you are creating, it is special.
Here are some titles I came up with for my previous projects(many I gave up on): My TV works on Miasma; Town of Tomorrow or the Computer Apocalypse; All pigs deserve to burn in hell; Pyrrhus won the war (in the end); Cool Winds (which brought us magic); Never forget the thought of freedom.

In the end, though, the title of a work is not really important compared to the work itself.

Thanks stu and BSP, well I officially changed the project to Tardigrades until further notice.

The name is currently being used a lot in the space scientific community. So I hope by the time the game is complete it'll be more familiar.

I appreciate the link you sent me BSP.
