AGS Awards 2010 *LIVE* CEREMONY
What is a live ceremony? As an annual event, the AGS awards winners are revealed via a ceremony that so far has taken place on the IRC Channel. However the awesomeness of SSH's rendition of the ceremony, after it was concluded has led into this. A live ceremony is a ceremony where YOU control yourself.
How does it work?Firstly thanks to Wyz's code (designed for this purpose mostly) we now can have the most awesome thing ever imagined. Or second close. Regardless everyone will be assigned of a person in the crowd. Now announcers when given the ability to announce will be ported on stage. The AGS executable offers automatic connection to the AGS ceremony channel, and only requires you to declare your nickname on start. It keeps log of everything individually.
Who's behind this?Wyz, Dualnames, JimReed, m0ds, bicilotti and most importantly YOU.
It's not hard to use or to comprehend, it's designed for people that can't use the irc or don't want to download a client, or just want to make this MORE AWESOME THAN EVER.

Modified the first post of the AGS Awards thread to mention this! ;)
I will most definitely be participating!
Oh, absolutely! Count me in.
Suggestion: Make the date and time of the beta test more visible in your post.
About the "automatic connection bit"... There is no need to be on a home-made VPN like in CVB?
I'll come. For my avatar it could be the one from Cold Virtual Beer (easy), can I make my own? Does it have to be the one made by you?
Probably be laggy as all hell, but I'm game for it. Count me in.
Damn, I invited like 100 people already!
But screw them, just count me in.
Yeah, I don't want to miss this either. Plz sign me up!

As much as I'd like custom avatars it's off-limits, as time is ticking away.

No, but still no custom avatars. I'm gonna probably use them. For what we have now, people will be assigned the same character. We'll see on the following days, for now gimme all you got baby.
This is one of the coolest things ever.
Definitely in the running for best non-adventure next year!
I'm assuming of course that it works - I have high hopes!
Count me in.
[EDIT] I don't understand. Do you want custom avatars sent to you or not?
Okay I think I might be able to code this. SEND ME YOUR CUSTOM AVATARS, if anyone wants his OWN AVATAR ONLY BY HIMSELF, gimme a password to code.
Count me in Dual!

Haha I don't care if someone is using my avatar. :-)
I'll make mine tonight.
You didn't answer my question about the connection: Will one nee dot be on a home made VPN (e.g. Log Me In/Hamachi) or does it work over the Internet?

It works over irc. :D
Which means we get to see the log of the irc. And also our messages go over to the irc channel of the ceremony. However we got characters and see the show via an AGS executable.
What an absolutely crazy idea. I'm in!
Oh, one last question: since we have a high-res background here. Which resolution/size should the characters have?
The resolution is 640x480. I still don't have the background yet since JimReed is working on it, and please don't take me wrong I'd like to use Ali's background like hell, but I want something more fitting in my ideas for now. I'm no arrogant cock. At least not on February. ;)
I still don't fully understand how it will work but it sounds fun so I'm in!
I'm in. I voted and now I want to see the ceremony. ;D
If I'm not mistaken, here is how it works :
- There will be this IRC channel -- your typical IRC channel (if you don't know what's an IRC channel then you've never been young and cool). I guess this will be the official IRC channel of AGS (#ags on irc.adventuregamestudio.co.uk)
- If you're lousy, you connect to IRC using your regular IRC client (like mIRC) and just chat with all other attendees to the ceremony
- If you're fresh and awesome, you use the custom "IRC client", based on AGS, released for the ceremony. This is no classic IRC client. It will be like an adventure game, with characters and all. Everything you say appears on the IRC channel, and vice versa. You also see all other attendees walking around you and you can read what they say.
Am I right? AM I RIGHT? Oh if it's how it works I'm all frisky already.
Apparently, I've just arrived in the world of tomorrow. I've never used irc for anything. But wrapping it in the warm and familiar concept of AGS makes it seem more palatable (like chocolate covered ants or something). So, sure, sign me up for this brave new world of AGSirc. I'll get my lil' avatar together as soon as I can.
I'd like to join too but do I need to create an avator or something?
And what else do I need to do for it?
For those who are afraid of irc and mirc: the instant messager Pidgin for example has irc support. Just check you IM client, you might already have an irc tool installed!
@Arj0n: if you want an avatar cool, if you don't want an avatar, you can still use one that other people have provided.
@Ponch: Everything is handled by me for you, so all you need to do is double click on the exe, choose a name, choose your avatar and type non-sense.
The AGS executable directly connects to the irc channel of the ceremony, translating various messages to certain ways. Like when bici gives v+ to an announcer, I transport said announcer on stage. Tadda, magic. The beta-testing will probably be better with words than I am.
I am so in!
Will the files that I already sent you work, Dual? I am asking because they are meant for 320xY not 640xZ resolution. I might turn out a little small.... :)
I still find it hard to imagine how this works because they way it sounds it seems too cool to be true so I really can't wait for the beta testing.

I would love a sprite sheet that I can recolor and paste my head onto for a custom avatar. Hint hint.

I don't understand.. Are you asking for announcers?
Eitherway sounds like an awesome idea, someone should broadcast the video live! :P.

Okay, I will explain this once again.
First we have an irc channel (ags ceremony). For those who have attended a ceremony before, you remember that bicilotti was playing with the +v -v modes to give voice status and with the m+ m- to silence the whole channel or unmute.
Now what this ags executable does (let's call it AGSIRC for now) is that it connects to the agsceremony channel and a secondary channel. The secondary channel works for commands and you need to know nothing else for it. Now a normal person would connect to the agsceremony channel using an irc client and just see text. We on the other hand, will have awesome features such our own avatars (same for announcers and crowd). The difference is that an announcer joined can walk on stage. That's all.
Also we have a text log and list of the members that joined the agsceremony. Everything you type goes to the agsceremony channel cause you've actually joined it.
So it is basically for anyone? If so sign me up :D.
I haven't got an avatar though.. Would be great to be provided with one I can use to help me make one myself in the right sizes..
And of course you can add me to the list. I'm looking forward to this! :D
(http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q53/JustLedZep/hau2-stage5copy.png)
This is too dark and too depressing (shamefully I'm only good at that), but this is how I imagine the scene to be. The 80px black border on the bottom is where the GUIs will be. If anyone can really take on a cartoony or pixelly take on this I'd love it. I'd like to use Ali's which is awesome, but it's gonna end up too crowded in no time. And mine is too depressing. That's all.
I think it looks awesome Duals.
And yeah, sign me up for joining this thing! :P
I can see why you'd go with hi res for a lot of potential sprites on screen but I don't have time to make a large sprite set for this, at least not now. Hopefully someone can use a cam recorder to record the event. Hopefully you have some way to cutting off audience text entry while awards are presented, otherwise things will get pretty cluttered.

I will record the event, so don't worry. Perhaps if I reduce the reso to 320x240, would that be better for everyone?
Gorgeous BG Dual!
I would think higher resolution is better just to be able to fit in all the ongoing text in the chat. If someone wants to use 320x200 avatars, can't they just double-size their sprites?
Nice stage, Duals! It looks bare now, but I'm sure once it's filled with audience members it won't be an issue.
I'm in, I jsut have to send my .CHAR file right?
I defintely won't miss this. Count me in!

Yeah, what he said for me, too.

Lol, no, I need someone to animate him :(. He only has that one sprite...
Darn, I though I found an avatar... ;)
Hehe :P, if anyone ends up doing some rough animations of him for me you can surely use him too ;).
Hey anyone, hurry up with those animations ;)
Haha! Nice use of old agdzine material there Dualy. You can put me down as a "maybe". Not sure til after this weekend if I'll be about on a Wednesday. Good luck though!
I am going to try my best to be there.
Sadly I will have to withdraw my position in the audience as I'm going to be at a weekend long music festival on the 5th. :(
lol, I've been here for like seven years and I always manage to miss the awards ceremony!
If I'm around I'll surely drop in. Have to see how my schedules for the day work out but so far seems like I'd be available on the evening.
Just reconfirming my intent to be at the ceremony on the 5th (6th early morning for me), but I will not be able to help with the test on the 3rd, as it would be starting at 3:00am on Friday Morning, and I have work on Friday. If the rehearsal ceremony were 3 hours earlier I could pop in, but as-is, I'm a no-go.
Good luck with the test! Looking forward to the ceremony.
Once again, I'm gonna miss the awards. Woo hoo. Jolly. Great. Good for me. What the fuck.
The planned beta testing on 2nd of March as stated on the first post, will of course take place.
-When exiting use the X inside the AGS window and not the one outside it.
Features:
-Awesome avatars.
-Awesome stage.
-Awesome log automatically created for you.
-Awesome bugs (hopefully not)
I am impressed.
Amazed actually.
Awesome work!
I'd like to stay in the audience to share the ceremony (for to do applause and cheers or silent admiration), but I don't know how to leave the stage. Can someone give me a hint, please?
The way it is now the first character is on the stage and the second one appears below. You can easily try this by starting the exe multiple times, thus populating the room.
Just tested it out. Very nice! :D
Yes, that's it.
Thank you.

Working great here. It would be cool if we could see each avatar's nick when hovering the mouse over them.
I have to say I'm glad that all the awesome bugs and glitches were because of qptain nemo :P
I'm also very thankful to everyone that showed up and dasjoe that helped me rise to operator.
Also I think the test was an absolute success, and hopefully I'll implement everything by tomorrow when the next and final big test is. Check the first post.
I'll post a link as long as I'm done with the implementation of stuff.
This sounds absolutely balls2walls awesome. I'll definitely do my best to participate in the event. (sort of depends on my somewhat dodgy internet connection in the deep forest though)
That was great! Looking forward to the ceremony.
Where do we download from?
Bam!!
Link is currently broken, Duals.
Dual/Wyz,
Could the host and his desk be replaced to the side of the ceremony screen in stead of being in front it like it is now?
Somehow it distracts when you show stuff on the screen.
Great job b.t.w.!
-No more link provision-
Sorry, no chance for me with this one :P
(after typing the name and ok, it freezes)
Sign me up, please, Dualnames! :D
I missed the beta, but it looks awesome even with an empty stage!
Will try very very hard to make it for the ceremony.
@Dual/Wyz
Will there be another final-beta-run?
First, I'd like to say that m0ds is also part of this thingie, since he provided some AWESOME music. There will likely be a final beta-test today. I'll post a link if so.
I just found out minutes ago that I will have a work-related event this Saturday. I'll try to make it home in time for the ceremony, but I'm pretty sure I won't able to attend. Sorry. :(
Damn a lot of stuff happens around here without me noticing..
..and here I was, disappointed that there wouldn't be a game-style awards after checking out the archived 2008 version and just savouring the possibilities. I even put my pretend coder cap on again and messed around with Wyz's original code in the hopes I would have come up with something myself. (I actually understood more than I thought I would and it was FUN, but fruitless i'm afraid).
So uh, am I too late to register? I don't have a character but maybe I can go for a marathon session tonight and cobble something together that will make you puke. If not, i'll settle for the normal low-res retro irc channel.
Awesome work Dual et al. You are legends. Enough said.
You don't need to provide your own avatar, stray. The game comes with a selection of default ones to choose from (though you might end up wearing the same thing as someone else, in case you find that sort of thing mortifying).
I claim Ponch's spot in the name of Oceanspirit Dennis. If you can't make it, old buddy, I'll make sure there's enough OSD spirit for the both of us. I'm pretty sure Dualnames can handle the Barn Runner fan demographic.

That would be a disaster(!) Nah, not so worried about what i'll be wearing (naked on all fours is just fine=P ) Just unsure as to whether I need to register to join via the game/is there a limit on numbers/which download link to use and whatnot.
@straydogstrut: There's no point on clarifying your will to come. There's already enough place, so I don't need to track down members. I will most likely see you there then. ;)

Far too late for the actual ceremony, but thought i'd mess around trying to create a character (my first!) anyway. Here's what I got so far. Only 3 frames so it's a bit jerky - it's much smoother in AGS tho - and the up/down views are horrible as I can't draw animals face on. Can't draw them from the side either but you know..

Reporting LIVE from the AGS awards ceremony...
I won't spoil anything for those who aren't watching. All I'll say at this point is that there seems to be an unwritten rule that everyone with the same avatar has to stand next to each other. I have never seen so many Sams and Maxes in my life. And for some reason, all the Sams seem to be standing up the front so no one else can see anything (see pic below - thanks Armageddon).
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!! :o
Congrats to Theo for winning everything.

Great awards ceremony this year, everyone! It was definitely worth staying up for.
And for everyone that was unable to attend for whatever reason, worry not! You'll be happy to know that you can experience all 1 hour 50 minutes of the 2010 AGS Awards show vicariously through the magic of time-o-matic video capture!
I will be looking into a method of compressing the 1.5 gigabytes that the file currently takes up, and once it is ready, I will be uploading it to this thread. Watch this space! And once again, congratulations to all the winners, nominees and everyone else who released a game in 2010. And especially large congratulations to Theo, who took home 80% or more of the trophies this year. Well done, everyone!
Great show, the interactivity made it a lot of fun! :=

Everything runs as smoothly as usual.

Yes ShiverMeSideways, I DID rape the space quest theme! But only because the original AGS demo did too!!1 ;)
Well done to all the winners and especially theo with a knockout number of awards! And well done to the team. It was brilliant, great to see so many people show up :D Thank you for my award!!
Brilliant ceremony and my thanks to everyone who made the magic happen. Definitely want to see something like this again next year, if not before as a regular IRC hangout (with a different background).
No bunnies were harmed in the making of this production. Theo tho..
Hooray, that was fun!
@SPC Just in case something goes wrong, I have that 1GB data block too. Does anyone have a Youtube director account or should it be the first legal movie on rapidshare? ;D
Next year I have a bold business venture. Honest Atelier & Co, place your chips on The Journey Down II for 0 awards, 500:1! Pull a few strings behind the scenes, suave dazzler, tip em some dirty paper, catch em sly, proper job with bundles in the duffle.
This was a unique experience for me!
Thank you for the wonderful time I could share with you (even if I didn't get a carrot) :P
Wyz, Dualnames, m0ds, bicilotti, JimReed and all the others from the ceremony

And not to forget: Congratulations to all of the winners! (http://www.web-smilie.de/smilies/sonstige_smilies/appl.gif)(http://www.web-smilie.de/smilies/sonstige_smilies/appl.gif)(http://www.web-smilie.de/smilies/sonstige_smilies/appl.gif)
Huge congrats to Theo for his big The Journey Down win! And big thanks to him for saying that in his opinion Snakes of Avalon should win for best Player Character and Non-Player Character!
Similarly, I wanted to recommend Technobabylon and Lightning Master (which wasn't even nominated in any category) as my other favorites of this year that should never be forgotten.
And for some stranger, riskier, and sometimes offensive games of 2010 you can't go wrong with: The Raindog Story, The Parrot Snatchers and The Astonishing Captain Skull. Or maybe you even can go wrong with them - that's how good they are. :)
Also, huge congrats to m0ds! Just don't treat this award as the mark of the end of your AGS Achievements - we need you!
Great ceremony. (But it needed more lesbians :-* )
Thanks for holding this ceremony and creating a unique experience for us all!
And congratulations to the winners again - especially to Theo for his horde of trophies.
*clap*

Same here, the whole thing felt "real" somehow with all the avatars. Thanks ceremony team especially Duals to make this possible in that way.
Sounds like this was awesome!
Im sorry to have missed it. :(
Btw, is there a little list of who won what? I can wait to see the video :)

Krikey! Well done Theo and Co. I knew TJD would do well, but... Ouch!
