Title: Thinking of a SQ1 remake, not sure yet though...
Post by: on Sun 12/09/2004 07:51:35
(This is my first post, so if this is the absolute wrong place for this topic, please don't hesitate to move it)

Lately I've been playing a lot of Space Quest 1 (the EGA version), and have got it in my head that it'd be cool if I made a Space Quest 1 remake that looks like Space Quest 6, as far as graphics, gameplay, etc. Using the SQ6 template of course.

I'm a graphic/print designer by trade, so the artistic part of it would be no problem. I was just wondering what else is involved in doing a remake like this. I've played around a bit with AGS, and have become pretty familiar with all the basics. (Thanks to the handy tutorialÃ,  8) )

Could one person pull something like this off, or would you recommend trying to assemble a small team? I'm not a guru with code, but I'm absolutely willing to learn.

I've tried organizing game modifications for Far Cry, GTA, etc... They made good progress, but everyone tends to flake out and just drop off the face of the planet after a couple weeks.

There's virtually no limit to the time I can devote to this, as I work from home, and much of the stuff I do doesn't take a large amount of time.

Anyways, I've typed enough. Thanks, everyone, for your responses. Looking forward to hearing them.

Peace.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure if SQ1 would be the best game to remake as it has been remade by Sierra to use the mouse. Your idea is a bit different, but yeah I still think another game would be more needed(?) of another remake. SQ3 for example, but I think that was being remade, although I havn't heard news on that for a long time.

If you are thinking of participating in a team, check out this thread: http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=16283.0 . They are looking for an artist, and I'm sure you could be the person they are looking for, judging by what your saying about being a graphic designer.

I remember playing SQ6 on my Mac back when I was in middleschool, and I think all the Space Quest games deserve to look like that one did. I especially liked the cartoony 3D feel they gave the game.

The VGA remake Sierra did of SQ1 wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. That thing at the beginning where the whole screen shakes, and the constant alarm noise was pretty annoying. Also, the resolution was pretty low. 320x240 I think.... Correct me if I'm wrong. I know it couldn't have been 640x480, as that's what SQ6 is at.

Space Quest 3 would be INCREDIBLE if it was in SQ6 format, but then you'd want to play all the others like that too.... Which is why I'd like to start with the first one in the series.

SQ3 VGA was in production, I'm not sure whether it still is...

By all means, remake. But maybe you should remake something that really needs remaking. SQ1 has already been remade, so there really isn't much point to it. In me own opinion, mind ye, bucko.

A SQ3 remake is looking more and more attractive, as it's one of the most fun out of the bunch. Also seems to be the general opinion that it's one of the best.

I just went and looked at his SQ3, and it looks pretty cool, but not quite what I'm going for.

They way I'd like to do it though is to model each scene like they did with SQ6, Photoshop it a bit to make it look a bit more cartoony, and go from there. That SQ6 template even comes with the Roger sprite they used in it.

I'll try modeling a scene for SQ3 and see if it turns out how I'm invisioning it and show everyone  8) Which scene would you guys like to see?

Sounds awesome. Personally, I would love to see the Monolith Burger place, but if not that, then the junk heap at the start of the game.

This reminds me. I love the space quest series, but have not really played SQ6. I downloaded a little bit ags, but havn't really had the time to play it.

To be frank, I'm content with the actual Sierra SQ1 VGA.  And I know Khaveen, who is making the SQ3 Remake, and he is still working on it.
I suppose you may still want to make yours, however, and I can't stop you....

I'm not so sure the graphics for SQ6 would work so well for some of the earlier games. I'm not saying the graphics couldn't be spiffed up a bit, but I can't immagine the cartoony Roger trying to get away from the exploding robot. For SQ6 the graphics were good, because it was, probably, the most wacky of all the games. There wasn't one room without a joke in it, where the earlier ones, while still funny, also maintained a more serious mood throughout the game.

However, that said...I'm a huge SQ fan, and I wouldn't mind getting an even newer version of SQ1. The VGA version was a huge inprovement, but it's graphics aren't good enough to deny it a total revamping. So do what you want...if you make it, we will come.

Exactly.

I guess I'll just start making my own little SQ remake. If you like mine better than someone else's, you'll play mine. If not, you'll play theirs. No biggie :P

Either way, I'll have learned something about coding, and will have something I can be proud of.

I'm thinking about creating an original game as well, but I think that with this, since I don't have to worry so much about the plot or story, I can focus on the coding aspect.... Which is my weakest point.

I think having the animated Roger would be pretty cool, I've always loved the style they did that one in.
