I am curious what the thoughts and feelings are of the people on this board, would you rather have higher quality music and a bigger download, or would you rather have Midi files and have a smaller download?

Just curious on what the general opinion is on mp3 music.

Music in mp3-format should not increase file-size that drastically unless you're thinking of several hours of soundtrack. So, if you can produce good sounding recordings, I'd say, go for the mp3-music. If your mp3s don't sound very good though (bad mic, bad pre-amp, bad mixing, whatever might be the reason), then go for midis.

Am I remembering correctly that there are licensing issues with regard .mp3, especially if used in a commercial game? Same goes for .jpg? Or was that just a bad dream I had a long time ago????

DoorKnobHandle

For commercial games, yes there are license-issues with mp3. For non-commercial games it doesn't matter. You wouldn't use .jpg with AGS.

Well.. I am actually using creative commons mp3's or free use midis, there are good files in both.

I am not making my own of either... because I am lazy.

I just know Laundry Day had an increase of size by at least 100% because I included MP3 music instead of midi.

Licensing issues isn't with the content of the files, but with the file format itself. Frauenhofer who own the codec doesn't allow it to be used for commercial projects without a license fee. So creative commons or not, if you ever intend to sell a game, use .ogg instead.

Ogre

I understand that, I was simply saying I was not making them, I just found free ones of both. I am not selling anything... not untill my games get better.

Nobodys paying 5 bucks for laundry day.

Well, then just go with the .mp3s. I find that midi music has to be very well written not to get on your nerves quickly. As long as the total download is less than 30-40 MB I don't see it as a problem to have 15 MB of music.
