I would like to update my profile. Can someone tell me how do I include a jpeg as part of my profile when I post? (you know, the pic that comes up on the left side of the screen below users name?
Thanks ::)

While you're logged in, click on the "profile" link at the top of any page.

Then, on the left side of the page, under "Modify your profile," click "forum profile information." From there you can add an avatar (the little picture), a signature, and all sorts of other good stuff.

In order to add an avatar, you need to have a picture no larger than 60x60 uploaded somewhere that allows hotlinking, like image shack or photo bucket. Just put the URL for said picture in the "I have my own pic" box, click change profile and you're good!

So they only allow gifs is that you can download from your webpage?

It's not just GIF files- you can also use PNG or JPG.

And the picture just has to be on a website somewhere- but probably not a free site like geocities or tripod, because they won't let you hot link (access a file without going to the website).

Okay, can you maybe provide me with the address of a place where I might look at and choose downloadable jpegs or gifs that are not too large. (I've always had trouble with downloading one of these and it being way too large) :-[

Ok for starters, DragonRose is helping alot, but I'll try and break it down further.

Alright. If you have a picture on your computer that you want to use then this is what you do:
* Go to this site: http://www.imageshack.us/
* When you are at the site, click on browse. A window will come up. Find the picture on your computer and click Open.
* The next screen will show a few long texxt box things. Select the text in the bottom one (Direct link to image), and right click and select copy.
* Ok, now go back to your profile in these forums.
* Go to "Forum Profile Information" and in the first box up the top, paste in the text that you copied earlier.
* Click change profile, and you are done :)

Well all that was if the picture was on your computer... I will now explain it if it was on a site. If the image you want is on a site somewhere then you need to save it to your computer first, and THEN follow the steps above.
* To save a picture right click on it and select "Save Picture As..." remember the name and where you saved it so you can find it later.

Some sites with pictures are http://www.mess.be/ (Find the link that says "Display pics", find the picture and click on it to make it larger, then save it.) or maybe http://www.freewebstuff.be/avatars/

I hope that wasn't too confusing for you :)

Auhsor,
Wow, you walked me through that just fine and now I have a neat little gif to go with my posts. Thanks, you were great and I'll remember how to do it when I want to change the pic. :=
