Title: Virtual Reality is strangely appropriate...
Post by: Technocrat on Mon 10/03/2014 23:01:20
It's been a bit of a weird day. There I was Googling Technobabylon (which is of course something I do every day), and an image popped up that made me think "funny, I don't remember making that."

So I followed it, and it led me to a thread on the Oculus Rift forums (https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29=6523). It turns out that someone's been remaking the first part of Technobabylon using Unity, aimed at Oculus Rift (i.e. VR headsets). I'd been testing it a little, shortly before I received an e-mail from the developer themselves mentioning what they were up to. Perfect timing!

Wow, this is pretty cool, though my eyes refrain to look at these stereograms in a way to make it work at this resolution, I had to shrink them with view picture, then it works. Are there any 3d Trance images? :D
And what is this blue halftorso doing there?

Holy cow, that's cool! Are you going to be in any way involved in the project, or are you just leaving them to it?

Looks amazing... And I can't imagine the feeling when you found that pic!

I'm leaving them to it - I have only a very limited understanding of how unity works at this stage, and I'm in the middle of making Technobabylon properly. Well, one-third of the way...

That is really awesome :)

Though a bit weird and risky to undertake such a huge thing without checking with you beforehand.

Hey everyone, I'm Coda - the lone developer of this project. Thanks to Technocrat for sharing this with the people!

This is true, except for the fact that it really wasn't a huge undertaking, and was actually intended solely as a personal lesson for myself to see if I could make the transition from AGS over to Unity3D. It's just one of the projects I am currently exploring, and didn't take me all that long to knock this one out. In fact, I wasn't even really planning on releasing the demo to the public - but a few of my friends in the VR community really enjoyed the premise, and so I decided to unleash it upon the world! I do apologize for not reaching out sooner. I certainly had no intention of stealing any thunder from Technocrat (which is why I emailed him - coincidentally - just as he was playing the demo!?) Anyways, I am very excited to hear that there is more work being done on a full game as we speak! On that note - I have suspended further development on this personal project - I'd rather let the master himself, spin this tale!

I'm also glad to see awareness of VR here in the AGS community - as I truly believe that it will be (and is already) breathing new life into our beloved genre. It's so exciting to see all these ideas for Adventure Games (old & new) being brought to new life in full stereoscopic 3D Virtual Reality! Stepping INSIDE the world of Technobabylon, and actually feeling like I'm there - was just an opportunity I could not resist creating!!

Hey Coda, can you nudge Technocrat to give use TECHNOBABYLON 4? This is the biggest cliffhanger in the history of AGS. :cheesy:

Really cool.
I like the Blade Runner feel to it.

Nice one James! There was a game once, with a man, standing on a lawn, of freshly mown grass, didn't seem to have many clothes on... I wonder what that one looked like with an Oculus Rift. Let's ask the AGS Awards?! ;)

I certainly look forward to seeing what else Coda constructs with Oculus Rift. Someone's selling a developer's kit here for a discount, so I may have to take it off their hands for that.

It's...closer than you might think! ;)
