Title: "walking deads" vs. "dead ends"
Post by: ThunderStorm on Wed 04/02/2004 13:27:57
Well, there are lots of topics here referring to 'walking deads' - situations that make it impossible to successfully complete a game.

Question: Aren't that 'dead ends'? I remember the 'walking dead' being another word for zombies.

You, know there was this rather embarrassing situation on IRC, when people laughed at me for stating I was stuck in a walking dead, which actually is quite a funny image.

Or is this some kind of running gag?

They're called walking deads because the character is still alive and walking around but at a dead end and unable to progress in any meaningful way.

Hehe - sure, I know what it is, I'm just curious whether we all have used an inappropriate word for quite some time, as google seems to bring up only pages where "walking dead" refers to people who still walk around although they aren't supposed to, due to physical and medical reasons.

Or is it really just me, and "walking dead" means just the player figure in a situation of being helplessly stuck, and not the situation itself?

I've always, and still, call them 'dead ends', and was confused when I first heard the term 'walking dead' in the AGS forums.  So you're not alone.

I do think it's a fitting description, though.  I guess it's just down to personal choice which term you use.

And anyway, I thought this thread would be about zombies too...

YOu FOOLS!!!

Why the hell did you think it was referring to zombies??? Zombies are referred to as THE WALKING DEAD, not WALKING DEADS, which is the adventure term. Get it straight fools...

If anyone thinks you are talking about zobies tell them they are a tosser who has no concept of the english language!!! Fuck them all!!!

Tosser me, baby.

The reason why I thought maybe the thread would be about zombies is because we already have a couple threads dealing with walking deads in different ways. Why would the writer make a new thread when all he had to do was write it in a current thread?

It's not a big deal anyway :)

I find "living dead" pretty lame. I mean, if you're alive, you aint dead. Silly crap.

I don't like to 'take over' an existing thread by destracting the conversation to another subject, even if it is related.

Thinking about it, how much of your lifetime do you lose by clicking on a thread, reading two lines, realising it's something else than you had expected and clicking 'back' on your browser? It happens to me all the time, but I usually blame it on myself.

I'll change the subject though, to prevent further confusion  :)

I though those were two seperate terms

walking dead is were you can't carry on because you are walking around without the right equipment or something.

Dead end i thought is where you die because you do something wrong and without a certain thing you forgot to pick up you can't not die. over and over without going back to a saved game ect..

so the only difference is that walking dead are not really dead just not able to compltete the game in their current state. Am I wrong?
This is what you can do in broken sword two i think?

for example there is a game where if you walk into a room you get shot, but if you use a key on the window to open it you can wait until the people leave the room so you do not get shot, but if you don't have the key you get shot.

i stopped making sence now so i'll just be quiet.

Dead end has nothing to do with the character actually dying. It just means that no matter what you do, there's no way of proceeding the game.

How was I supposed to know that this was a thread about games with dead ends in them ?(that's the term I frequently use)  Usually when I hear the words "Walking Dead" it has to do with zombies... (unless you're talking about that movie with Sean Penn).

So I'm a tosser! (whatever the hell that is...)

I prefer the term walking deads, because it conveys the fact that everything is still interactive, that you're walking around despite not being able to get anywhere.

In that capacity, the coincidental relation to zombies is probably quite accurate. You're alive, but it's a shade of a life, without meaning, and with no hope of attaining a higher goal of the afterlife or the end of the game.

Heh because you made a game that the player was walking dead at the beginning? ;)

This should prove that, yes, he did infact read the thread, he was just commenting on how he thought it was about zombies before he read it. Smartass.

I haven't had the time to go through this topic, but in case the AGS-dictionary (see below) is wrong, please inform me.

A-ha!
It says "The player has reached a dead end [...]", but "The character is a walking dead, when [...]".

So - the situation of being helplessly stuck is a dead end, whereas the player character in this situation is refered to as a walking dead.

Thanks Andail, for clearing that up.

I can't even remember the last time I looked at the AGS Dictionary...

The only things I can remember from it are:
1. Andy Penis
2. Yahtzee
3. 1337 5p34k

:P

Well, I was just being deliberately pedantic.  He asked how he was SUPPOSED to know what the thread is about, so I said "by reading it."  I never claimed he didn't do that.
