Title: Washingttens! Postponed Until People Come
Post by: Anarcho on Fri 31/03/2006 22:13:32
The date is set!  We will be having a meeting of AGS enthusiasts this coming Labor Day weekend (Sept 2-4th) hosted by myself, Anarcho, in Washington DC.

Possible activities could include:

Talking about how great computer games are while staring at the Lincoln monument:

Comparing the works of Georgia O'Keefe as seen in the Smithsonian to the works of Steve Purcell:

and drinking a special "AGS ALE" homebrewed by yours truly and guaranteed to inspire disturbingly dark amateur adventures.

If you would like to attend and haven't already spoken up, either post a message in this thread or PM me.  I am going to ask that this is a 18+ event for obvious reasons, and if you're under 21, please PM me to talk about it before you come.

There will be limited accomodations available in my apartment (if you dare), otherwise I can help people with finding a hostel or hotel.  This hostel is actually a couple blocks from my apartment and in a very cool neighborhood:

and here is another one with reasonable prices:

Let me know how I can help, and I hope to see you here!

Logan

Hi all,

A little while back, a few of us on Irc were talking about having a meet-up here in the US.  I live in Washington, DC and would be willing to host such an event.  I'm thinking we could do this over a weekend, or possibly over a long weekend (Friday-Sunday).  It can get miserably hot around here in the summer, so the best time to do it would probably be in May or early September, though I'm willing to do it anytime (though I might mention I'm out of town May 28 - June 4).

As for accommodations, I live in a one-bedroom apartment with my girlfriend and a cat.  Depending on how many people come, some people can certainly crash here.  Alternately, there are a few hostels in the area, though I'm not sure about availability.  We've also got plenty of hotels, if you're rolling in doe.

As for what we could do--I'm right in downtown dc, just a metro ride from all the monuments & Smithsonian.  There are a lot of restaurants around, and some fun bars.  If it's warm enough and people wanted to do it, we could also drive out to the beach (though it's a few hours away).  Oh and of course, we can get all nerdy and discuss Adventure-ish things all day and night.

I think I'd have to put an age restriction on this, either 18 or 21.  I don't know which would be better.

Anyway, let me know if you're interested!

Sara and I were planning a weekend trip to DC soon ... this could work out very well for us.  I'm definitely interested.

September probably wouldn't work ... as we're planning on going to Mittens (if we can get that much time off from work) and that'd be too close together.

Sometime in May might just be perfect!  Let's, if others are interested, work on some specific dates.

Well Scummbuddy seemed interested when we were talking about it on Irc, so that would already be a good group!  Sweet...

Edmundo also has a specific time frame of when he could attend, and I believe Ginny expressed interest.

I, of course, have nothing to do but wait until we all meet. I'm extremely flexible.

Tempting, but I wouldn't dare spending any more money or taking any more time off :D

Of course everyone thinks where they live would be best, but I think a good spot for an Amerittens would be Michigan, since central Ontario, Cananda and it's dense AGSer population is a mere 3-4 hours away. However, it looks like the central to lower east-coasters are meeting up, so why not D.C. I will try to arrange some kind of "-ittens in the Mitten" eventually ;)

I'm good between may until mid june. However, after august would be best for me. Anyway, let's see how the plan unfolds and I'm sure we can arrange a date where most of us can make it.

DCittens would be awesome! And if you'll pay for my flight, I'll come! :P

Sure, you're check is in the mail!  I've sent it to "England, C/O Mods"...it should get there, no problem.

How far is DC from NYC?
Title: Re: DCittens?
Post by: edmundito on Mon 03/04/2006 04:03:14
We should call it Washingttens, DC.  :=
Title: Re: DCittens?
Post by: Anarcho on Mon 03/04/2006 04:14:31
Not far at all, actually.  There are buses you can catch for 40 bucks round trip that take about 4.5 hours one way (they're called the Chinatown buses, even though they have stops throughout the city).  Greyhound costs a bit more, I think around 90 bucks round trip.  Amtrak is a bit quicker, and much more comfortable, but very expensive.  You interested Big Brother?

Edmundo, I like the suggestion.

Thus far, it seems like May is possible for everyone.  How do people feel about the weekend of May 12th?

Wow, yet another gathering I will miss.  This makes, I think, 12 or so.  GO SEDENTARY TYPES!

You live in the west, right? You westies can have your own gathering! Call it Westtens or something. ¬¬

Anyway, may 12 may be a little too soon for me. I dunno what the others are up to, though.

All right, I'm entirely flexible, except i'll be in Milwaukee on the last week of May.  If more people could come in September, that's fine by me.  And I'm also open to meeting up in the summer proper...

I'm interested!
I haven't been to DC and my girlfriend is itching to go again.
Perhaps early June would be better than May though since Elizabeth is a teacher, and I'd like to stay for more than a quick weekend - in the Watergate hotel, that is - not your apartment, Logan, don't worry.

Since everyone's talking about the hot events the season (Brittens, Mittens) we might as well resucitate this thread for a quick question:

How about labor day weekend? Like... Friday the 1st/Saturday the 2nd of september until monday sept. 4? Too short? Too late? Too... soon?

The reason why I propose such a date is because I'll be living close enough to drive to DC by then and that's the only holiday I see in september.

If it works the same going from Canada to the US as it does contrarywise, you won't need a passport until 2007.

I'd totally be on for this.  It's easy for me to get down there.  I have a sister who lives there, so I can crash with her.

While it would be nice to attend another AGS meetup, I'm afraid I can only make the two taking place several thousand miles away, not this 600 mile away Washingttens :D.

That could potentially work for me.  I'd have to check with the old lady though...

This sounds, like fun, but where would we be staying? and when is it?
Title: Re: Washingttens? May 06?
Post by: Anarcho on Fri 30/06/2006 00:36:47
Well, as I said in the first post, some people could potentially crash here if it's just for a weekend.  But I only have a one bedroom apartment.  And my girlfriend probably wouldn't love that idea.  There are hostels around, lots of hotels.  But they can be costly.  We could also do the camping thing...there's actually an island in Maryland I've always wanted to go to...they have campsites and even wild horses.    We could camp on the beach: http://www.nps.gov/asis/camping.htm

Just an idea.  There's plenty to do in DC.

Ok, as for the dates...I'll double check with my girlfriend tonight, but the weekend of Sept. 2nd should work.  So I'd be willing to definitely set Labor Day weekend in stone if we can all agree on that.  So far, we've got myself, Edmundo, Dave Gilbert, and Scummbuddy definitely down for this.  We've also got interest from lo_res_man and SteveMcrea.

Anybody else?

We could like split a hotel room. most come with two beds, and dunno if we want to stay at the Hyatt or something fancy like that anyway, so it would be a bit but not too much.

Yeah, I'm still interested!
Right now I don't know how much vacation I still have (I've got a trip to NY planned when Dave is out of town, and then my parents are coming to visit in October), so I'll need to check out if it's possible...

So, two weeks from now we're supposed to meet in Washington. I was wondering who is still in, who might come, and who's out.... let's compile a list mittens style and all of that...

It's the closest AGS meeting to me ever...

Oh well, I'm over it now.

Yes, please, let's come up with a final roll call.  Here are the people who said they would come:

1. Dave Gilbert
2. Edmundo
3. Scummbuddy

These people have said they're interested but haven't said anything since:

4. SteveMcrea
5. Darth Mandarb

If anybody else is interested, please write back as soon as possible!  If only Dave can or will come, then maybe we should do this another time when more people can or will come.  Either way, I'm happy to have you all down.

And "Illuminare Acqua" Akumayo, I'm sorry to have to set an age limit, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone underage.  It's nothing personal and I know it sucks, but that's the rule I'm setting down.  Sorry  :-\.

I understand completely, no worries.  I'll be 18 eventually, and AGS will probably still be around by then.

I'm going to totally play up the touristy thing. I'll be wearing my "I (heart) DC" shirt.

We'll make a scavenger hunt by the tourist sites and set up a real life adventure game.

Yeah, like I could organize that in 2 weeks.

Pay for my flights, booze and well.. booze and I'm there.
I'm happy sleeping in trashcans, ditches, storm drains, anywhere.Ã,  I just need to get there.

Hell, I'll drink anti-freeze if you can just get me there.

Unfortunately, I've decided to postpone Washingttens due to the apparent lack of interest.  Only Scummbuddy and Dave Gilbert said they'd definitely come, and while I look forward to meeting these two gents, I was hoping to host an event with at least a couple more people.

Hopefully we can do this sometime in the future...

Hm.  I do find this incredibly disappointing, but I think some issues have definitely contributed to its downfall:

1 - The meetup was during Labor Day Weekend, in which many people are travelling

2 - It was scheduled just after Mittens, by which everyone is probably meet-up'ed-out

3 - It's been proven that us lazy Americans don't like to travel, in general.

I think there are a decent number of AGSers in the eastern US to make a meetup like this worthwhile.  D.C. is fairly simple to get to.  Maybe sometime in November, Anarcho?

Yes, traveling rather sucks.  Farther than 10 miles from me is OUT OF THE QUESTION!* :(

*at least until I have some of that green stuff they call cash.

November would probably work fine!  Even if we scaled it down to just saturday and sunday and it was just you, me and scummbuddy, that would be fine!

I definitly want the Natural History Museum back open when we get back together... That place you can spend a good amount of time, its free, it has IMAX movies, its free, and there are dinasaurs, and it's free, and it has that haunted Hope Diamond.

I don't think the natural history museum is closed...it's website doesn't mention anything except some exhibits being under construction...

Either way, just about every museum in town is free!  I've been meaning to get over to the new (relatively) American Indian museum...i've only walked through it briefly and the building it quite stunning.
