Title: What would you do in Maniac Mansion?
Post by: Bombadil on Tue 30/11/2004 18:59:06

Well, just that: what would you do if you where inside Maniac Mansion?

Push the gargoyle and lever it so the secret door never closed. Also, I'd have a workout, a nice bath with Ted, would open the grandfather clock, and would bathe in the radioactive pool (and act surprised when tentacles started growing).

You mean, besides blatantly ignoring the velvet rope and sign saying "upstairs library closed"....

hmmm... maybe I'd take up Edna on that "chain you to the bed thing"....

I once read they had to make a "softer" version of Maniac Mansion for the American NES-Release, and it did not contain the "I should have tied you to the bed" phrase.
Anyway, I would pet the hamster a lot, its so cute, and I would stare at Razor's legs all the time  :D and maybe try to eat some of the rotten meat and drink the pepsi, since nobody else wants it anyway.

I think I'd just spend the whole day playing on the video games while hearing Metal music on Green's speakers with the whole house trembling. ^^

Did you ever play the tentacle mating song on Green's stereo? I don't know what happens but Green hops towards you, it fades to black and you end up dead. So I'm not going to think about that anymore.

Oh, I'll try that later, but what's "tentacle mating song"?

Yesterday, when I was in bed, I thought of waiting until the package for Ed arrives, and then hide on the kitchen/outside and while he is picking it up, close him outside. I couldn't hold the laughter. Muahahaha!

I've been thinking a while and it would be great to put the hamster in the microwave...

You're exagerating, my dear friend. Besides, it's not as if your two buddies wouldn't be able to use the Chron-O-John to rescue you. Even Dr. Fred would mention that if someone had died before Sandy was rescued.

At any rate, I've been thinking and thinking and thinking, and I think I wouldn't mind publishing that meteor's autobiography. As long as I labeled it "fiction", it could be a bestseller!

In Zak McKraken, is Katmandu I believe, theres a poster in the police station that says "WANTED: One purple meteor. For oozing slime and doing gobs and horrible things."

If I was in the mansion I would have the sense to turn the microwave off before I opeded it. You'd think it would be obvious, but no...

I might have the name wrong, and it might just be something from LucasFan's deluxe edition, but there's a record that plays a high pitched squeal that is used to break glass.  It's the tentacle mating song or call or something.

I would give the tentacle lots of love, in the hope that that would counteract the pernicious effects from drinking polluted water. Ã, Then he would never want to take over the world and "DOTT" would never have been made and "Willow" would now be thought of as Lucas' greatest achievement.

Oh, now I know what you mean. Probably you got the name ok but it's been a long time since I played MM in English. I tried it, but in the original version of the game it doesn't ocurr that ^^. I'll try another day in the Deluxe.

Bombadil, that's really uncalled for. I know you're probably joking, but not everyone has the same tastes in games.  I could never play MM for more than a few minutes (it bored me to tears), and I've never played DOTT.  Some people on this board are Sierra fans and don't like LucasArts games all that much. It's just a LITTLE mean to say we should be banned.

Rui: "Willow" is this. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096446/)  It is a movie of awesomeness.

Actually I hand't... but it sure was fun reading some reviews.

Review #1 - "Lord of the Rings it ain't"
Review #2 - "Better than lord of the Rings"

:=

At any rate, back on topic and back to the mansion (geez, I might as well REALLY move in), I'd seriously consider adding a pinball machine to all those videogames. Maybe a "Smite the Meteor!" board. Hey, maybe I'd even find a way to fix the air hockey and add a couple shoot-em-ups, like Mad Dog McPhee, or whatever the name is. And Virtua Cop! And billiards! And a DART BOARD! AND A SOCCER MACHINE!!! AND HALF-LIFE!!!!!! AND A COPY OF EEEVERY LEC AND SIERRA GAME EVER MADE IN A VIRTUAL REALITY INTERFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...

...sorry, I got carried away. Yeah. Pinball machine sounds good. ::)

EDIT -
QuoteIn Zak McKraken, is Katmandu I believe, theres a poster in the police station that says "WANTED: One purple meteor. For oozing slime and doing gobs and horrible things."

That always bothered me. Most LucasArts games are riddled with little such "easter eggs"... but chronologically, that's impossible. How can there be such a poster in Zak, and a poster for Zak McKracken in Maniac Mansion (which there is)? And these such things abound! I don't exactly remember where anymore, but I'm damn sure I saw Sam and Max statuettes in games that were made BEFORE Sam and Max.
Title: Re: What would you do in Maniac Mansion?
Post by: Redwall on Thu 02/12/2004 21:56:17
The appearance of Sam and Max in Monkey Island and other early LEC games is because Sam and Max is a comic that the old LucasArts employees were quite fond of, which is the same reason they eventually made Hit the Road.

For the record, the tentacle mating call exists in the original version - it's the record in Green Tentacle's room, and you can copy it to tape in the piano room (and play it to him, or send it to Mr. Eteer).
There exists a Nintendo (NES) version with non-scrolling screens, that had to be censored in a number of places because of inappropriate language or visuals (e.g. the statue that had pubic hair showing, according to the NES censorship staff, I'm not kidding!) Also NES found the name 'SCUMM' (the interpreter system) offensive.

Dr Ed says "It will piss of the meteor" in the PC version a few times. They changed it in the NES version.
You have to remember that back in those days Nintendo was the reigning lord of consoles. There was no XBOX DOA Beachvoleyball. (ah, lest all stare at Kasumi for a while)

Don't worry Bombadil, I could tell you were being sarcastic.  Perhaps since I was also being a bit whimsical, I should have put smilies in my message.

I love most of the Sierra games, particularly the Space Quest series, but I've never been into looking for the easter eggs.  But back when the games first came out, I did appreciate Sierra's attention to detail, and the easter eggs also gave us Sierra addicts a feeling that Sierra  actually cared about us and gave us a bit more than our money's worth.

You know, I'd  been wondering why Nintendo Power showed an image of a statue there when they gave two walkthroughs for that game. I kept wondering if it came through the mail, or was something I had to unlock, or the NP staff just had a better version than me, or I was in a different hallway. I had searched all over the house for that statue! :P

Frankly, I don't know what I'd do in that mansion. Probably bake some bread and search the fridge for Kraft Singles. And have arse sex with the hamster.

More trivia...
The Zak poster in fact only appears in the hi-res version of MM, which was released later when LucasFilm updated some of their classics.
IIRC, the steel security door is only present in the PC versions (and later made variants such as the NES version), because for instance the C=64 version didn't need copyright.

And if I were in the mansion I would get the petrol out of the car and put it in the chainsaw... Or was the car empty. I forget now. (http://users.tpg.com.au/lukinso/Forums%20Upload/emoticons/huh.gif)

Unless the game says so, I don't think that car runs with gas. It would need a big amount of gas to exit the Earth gravitation field. If tomorrow I get bored, I'll calculate the gas needed to do it. ^^

Damn, i wish i played Maniac Mansion as a kid.
Now i would have memories to admire, and everytime i would start the game, it would be a joy of reminiscing.

Tho i have kinda some memories of Maniac mansion.
My friend had an Amiga, and we always used to play it in his attic (not really attic, more of an apartment under the roof). It was really cozy for playing adventures (we always played Gobliins), tho we played all of his games.

There was this one game on 2 disks (i think, or 4) that never worked. The 2nd disk never worked that is. That part where you actually had to start the game after the intro (i'm not sure if AFTER the intro with choosing players or the other one).
Anyway, I know i always wanted to play the game, but never had the chance when i was younger.
By the time i knew all the affiliation with the game, and i had my new pc and access to the net, it was too late for me to play that game (in the same way i would before, ofcourse), so i actually never put myself into it.

C.
