Title: Where can I still get the Infocom classics?
Post by: on Sun 07/09/2003 12:02:13
okay, I'm hooked again. and old graphical adventures aren't enough, I also want the really classic classics. I remember there where once two collections, "The Lost Treasures Of Infocom", and someone told me there was a "complete collection", too. can't remember the name though, and while it's relatively easy to get zork for free, many of the old games (lurking horror for example) can't be completed without the manual.

does anyone here know where i can still buy the infocom classics (collection or whatever) WITH manuals? I'd really love to get my fingers on them again ;)

You could try ebay, but when an old game has a manual its price generally rockets. Try googling to see if someone's scanned a pdf.

Classic Text Adventures Masterpieces of Infocom was released by Activision, if that helps you look for it. I bought it only a few years ago, so it might still be available from some places. The manuals for every game are incuded in .PDF on a CD in this package, along with maps and hints. So you wouldn't need to worry about Archangel's warning trying to find original manuals.
I don't know if this is the exact package I have, but it looks like it:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000051ZT0/qid=1062944421/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_2/102-4276021-0436143?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000051ZT0/qid=1062944421/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_2/102-4276021-0436143?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846)

And there seem to be other infocom collections on Amazon (pretty expencisve though).

I actually OWN Lost Treasures.  It came with print manuals 3.5 AND 5.25 floppies.  I know you're jealous.  I know you are!

ADMIT DEFEAT!

Wow.  Infocom.  Would you believe I had a boxful of all the Infocom "feelies?" (the stuff that came in the box).  The crystal from "Journey," the zorkmid coin from "Zork I," and the ghost story book from "Moonmist."  All of that.  I kept it all in a box in my old bedroom.  WHen my parents moved I had to go through all my stuff and decide what to get rid of.  I threw out the entire box!  Gah!  So stupid.  I soon found out that people buy those things for hundreds of dollars on eBay.  Ah well, hindsight is 20/20.

Anyway,  the complete collections are nearly impossible to find nowadays, although you can download most of them from various abandonware sites if you're into that kind of thing.  http://www.the-underdogs.org has a bunch the last time I checked, including the copyright info.
