I just completed the classic time travel adventure, Future Wars (delphine/interplay) which is absoultely fantastic game made back in 1989/90. Does anyone know of a remake or similar game? Space quest is kinda similar but lacks the time travel aspect. Perhaps the star trek games coming online soon will have episodes from time travel series, that would be pretty cool - playing the episode kirk is playing a ww2 german officer!

Future wars would be an ideal game to remake, so here's a calling all adventure game programers, consider it ! :-)

Similar?  I'd say Flashback has the same 'vibe' as Future Wars but includes a lot of action elements so it may not be for you.  I applaud you for making it through Future Wars at all, actually.  Some of the puzzles were so obtuse in the game that I must have stopped playing it a dozen times at least.

Yeah, it was a bit of a battle, very enjoyable, the final puzzle was hardest, and a wacky platform style series of ladders to reach the control room, though the return route was cut slightly short so that was a relieve, don't think it would be possible to complete in 6minute time frame given.

Flash back, yeah it seems a bit like another world, great platform but not so much adventure ?

Maybe Beneath a Steel Sky (became freeware) or Universe.
Or Cruise for a Corpse?

Cheers Khris,

I've played Cruise for Corpse, great, haven't heard of Universe? shame there is no remake of those classics like with monkey island using the crisp clean graphics of today, though the older sprites still bring back fond memories of the 80s/90s!

Khris

Yeah, I really like the old school style better, but e.g. Tales of Monkey Island is pretty much exactly what a modern remake should look like IMO.
There's another old game by the guys who did Future Wars: James Bond: The Stealth Affair
It should come very close to FW.

Since you've mentioned remaking those old games with AGS, in case you haven't heard of it, AGDInteractive remade several old Sierra games

Having played Operation: Stealth I can tell you it's a very challenging (and annoying) game pretty much on par with Future Wars in terms of difficulty except I think the user interface is a bit better.

I loved these games. I think Future Wars more than the Stealth affair. I would love to see a remake of these games.

Hey, I remember that. That was some of the best ever music for the PC Speaker, too!

I remember Future Wars having a great atmospheric beginning, but then turning into a boring, completely linear interactive movie. And it had dead ends.

I much prefer Another World, even if it isn't exactly an adventure game.

Hmm, games similar to future wars? Duty and Beyond, Ringworld or Universe.

The funny thing is that Another World is also completely linear, and has dead ends... :)

Frankly I find it hard to compare the two. Future Wars was very innovative for its time, being (to my knowledge) one of the first VGA adventure games, one of the first games with an interface like that, and has excellent sound. It admittedly does not have much of a story, but then neither do most other adventures of those days; and it does not have more dead ends than the average Sierra game. A place where FW falls flat is its lack of humor and lack of lengthy descriptions for whatever actions you're trying.

Another World is also very innovative, being (to my knowledge) the first successful vector-graphic game on the PC. It has numerous diverse environments, some of which very beautiful, and manages to pull off an immersive atmosphere without displaying a single word of text anywhere. And it's challenging; I don't like games that are too easy, although this is a matter of taste of course.

I did compare FW to Another World because Another World was the next big game by the creator of FW and the reason I got interested in FW in the first place.

Another World was never boring and it didn't play like an interactive movie though. It wasn't always completely linear either.

Also, the dead ends were connected to the fact you couldn't save at any point you want. The whole game was divided into specific stages where you had to carefully plan your strategy from the beginning till the end, otherwise you had to start them over. And this was made obvious already in the first excellent stage.
