Title: you too, were once NOOB artists
Post by: eddie hitler on Tue 24/10/2006 15:38:38
I was wondering if any of you more experienced members, who have been spriting for some time now,
have any of your very first sprites tucked away somewhere, from when you were just a wide eyed traveller in an unkown land.If so, please post them here, I'd love to see them.

I wouldnt worry about your art. I cant draw anything near as good as that. You had (And still have) talent. Dont knock what you have done.

I don't worry about my art... But that doesn't mean I can't call my past attempts what they are, stumbling poop.

If only I still had the original sprite jam pages on my site, then you could see a bunch of really old sprite art from a lot of people like Helm, Pessi, 2ma2 and various others...

Crap Montage!

These are all 4+ years ago.  The large characters are from an rpg I was coding a long time ago and never finished, the war stuff is from an action game I started on 4 years ago about world war II zombies called Dead Rising.  Sound familiar?

You will note that they suffer from what I like to call saturation syndrome.  This was before I realized that drawing really dark things was bad.  Also, some of the torsos are stretched, which amuses me in retrospect.  Learning to draw anatomy by trial and error is a really bad idea!  And check out Guybrush, he's built like a truck!  For the curious, those were for the first ags game I worked on, back when ags had just been released and was dos!

Wow, these sprites that you guys consider crap, look great to me. I guess because I can't draw at all.....

This is my original version of Emily Enough, drawn maybe four years ago:

This is one of the first backgrounds I drew for EE.  Originally I drew the entire game in these black outlines.

This is all that remains of my first game project. Like most first game attempts, it succumbed to ambitiousness and an ill-timed hard drive crash.

Supersaturated, like the sugar in my coffee.

A would-be player character. She was born without a forehead.

Look at all those frames.

The other would-be player character. I still kinda like the design.

SSH: I agree.

Of course we should change the title, because my art is amazing too.. ;)

August, 2003 Characters for first(?) team challenge.

I believe my team doesn't mind showing them, since the game was never finished. Anyone of the team want's to continue? ;)

April, 2003: She was supposed to be in Where (one of my games).

Oh my god, no more high-res for me, please..

March, 2003: Some sprite jam entries and stuff.
(http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/carrot.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/masiina.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/spiritborg.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/nif2.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/seamonster.gif)

1. That carrot must be a male one! ;)
2. Machine that turns computer off when being too long in AGS forums.
3. Spiritborg, some kind of waiter cyborg.
4. Nif, an angry creature.
5. Seamonster, spritejam entry (probably July, 2003).

Then some real history from my part, unbeliveable that these are soon 6 years old.

December, 2000:
(http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/2000_dec_characters.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/carlo_walkani.gif) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/paajanen/ags/old/c3po.gif)

1. Some general characters
2. He is walking! Mafia guy for some never finished game.
3. Yes, you guessed right (I doubt). It is C3PO from Star Wars!  ;D

I don't know if I've made any progress in past years. I hope I have. ;)

There have been a couple of attempts to get it going again but it normally stops due to my laziness.  My official version is that we stopped because you vanished for a few years ;)

i only started do sprites last year this time when i started entering sprite jams. my first sprite was rincewind, seen here. my 1st actual sprite was mordy 1, but i just took a 3sized brush and roughly drew something without knowing i was doing a sprite.

all these sprites were done in my 1st few months of spriting: aug 2005 - feb 2006. so i'm still a noob really.  ;D

I should really dig up some of my super old Amiga stuff from the early 90's, though it's mainly metroid tilesets and small final fantasy-esque rpg sprites from when I was trying to make something useful with Blitz Basic.

Well these are some of my older sprites (not oldest though):

Screenshot taken from a Famicom shooting game with graphics hacked, some time around 10 years ago:

Some character sprites seen from this link (http://kof91.sourceforge.net/kof91/screenshots/default.htm) (See character arts in green shirt, I'm too lazy to upload the images myself so I just steal borrow the screenshots from an online page). Also about 10 years ago (I think).

And here is a real AGS sprite, meet thingie, who was starred in my first (and only) officially released AGS related demo in around 6 years ago:

Here, some of the early work...

George Lucas, Mark "M0ds" and CJ... Then it comes a ripp of Sophia Happgood in bikini. Andail, an icon I designed for hosting a sprite Jam. Then, early attempts of cartoony. Me over the body of Sam, the dog, and then James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha, Dave Gilbert and Rodekill... The last one in that row is the last sprite I made using more than 16 colours, before BB crushed me in critics lounge.

The rest are entries or examples when hosting SJ. Older than the "zillion colours naked guy", though. God, I even used the blur tool for the naked girl... :-\

An old BG I am quite proud...

And something new, to compare...

This one is good because allows to compare how I made the cartoony versions of AGSers, and how I do them now. Chrille is there, in both versions. Following him it' s Goldmund, Layabout, Pumaman and Grundy. I think I ripped Bernard' s leg for that last one...

Doodled these guys in msPaint one day in 2002.  They eventually turned into Joey and Rosa from BoE/Blackwell Legacy.

What have I learnt? That I can't draw in hi-res. And that apparently I can make backgrounds better than I can make people.

This is 3.5 years old. It was for an unnamed game that I never finished.

This is recent! It's for a game called Z-Like that I never finished I'm still making. When it's done, I intend to invoke my powers of persuasion on an unfortunate pixel artist to make people not vomit when they look at it.

Ok, chronically, I have 3 phases, I hope. Oh well, here goes nothing.

The stuff for my frist game that I never had an idea of what it should be about.
(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/921/room18defaultnx8.png) (http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8539/lizardeyesrw5.jpg) (http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2663/puuyt1.png) (http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4936/princessspriterd8.png)
THis is a bg for the game, a tree from one bg, and a character + cycles. And a sprite jam entry which for some reason is in .jpg, that was my first... didn't win :(

Then what I did after that, quite a while ago:

That be sprites for a game I still want to do, I guess, a bg for a game that had a really controversial theme, you don't want to know, and a random character to show off at CL, didn't work :(
Oh, and a Late Nite Butterfly. Ispired by Stickieee, later I composed some jazz to the name, one of the best I've done they say, the song that is.

SteveMcCrea, that 1st DOOM picture you posted looks familiar. Were you the one who had some stuff included with the DOOM Guru book put out way back in the early 90's?

I can't remember if it was you or not, but i believe that pic was in that book. I still own that book. That thing is so thick and heavy but it was a great read.  Sorry if it wasn't you.  But like i said, that one pic does ring a bell.

edit: I would look in the book, but i have it at work. I brought it in to show a co-worker because we play DOOM deathmatch over our network during lunch.

That 1st doom screenshot actually reminded me of Gloom, for some reason.

Amiga Gloom:

Okay so that's actually Gloom 2, 'cos "moby games" are arseholes and won't let me link. So screw them.

Oh, accept it was the later edition where they put a gun on the screen.

I loved that game. It looks crap now, but it was glorious blowing the guards to chunks, intestines and brains flying about the place. Superb. Oh, it looked blocky even then..oh well.

(Sorry for off-topic)
