Title: Z-Machine interpreter for mobiles
Post by: Saurabh on Fri 11/12/2009 12:30:59
Does anybody here knows any interpreter on Symbian or J2ME for Z-Machine games. Since Z-Machine games are IF and IF games are adventure games I hope its on correct forum.

A google search for "Z-Machine" and "J2ME" brought up this one: http://sites.google.com/site/zaxmidlet/

Edit: This one too: http://setera.org/ZeeME/

Dunno about Symbian but j2me has:
-ZXSpectrum
-C64 (slow)
-GameBoyColour
-Nintendo Entertaiment System (Famicom)
-Sega Master System
-Sega Game Gear

You can maybe find a ColecoVision emulator if you try hard, but it's still a beta so don't bother.
Speccy has loads of text-adventure games, if you can get around the akward (sp) manner of typing on a mobile phone.

PM me if you need these emulators.

I'll be getting a Symbian phone for Christmas, so I too am very interested in a Z-Machine interpreter for S60. There are various Java ones, but they're all rather cumbersome to install/use (at least when I tried a while ago on my current Java phone).

Oh, and it's not text adventures, but sauyadav, have you seen ScummVM for Symbian (http://www.scummvm.org/downloads/)? Monkey Island on a mobile... drrrooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Do UIQ binaries work on S60v3? (sorry for thread hijack :P )

@GarageGothic: Thanks for zaxmidlet, trying it right now. I knew about ZeeME but I am looking for better application.

@Jim Reed: Thanks Jim, there is a VGBA emulator for gameboy advance and PicoDrive for Sega consoles  on Symbian.

@Khris: Thanks for the link but I have S60v3 phone so UIQ version wont work. Maybe they have S60v3 version too, I will check.

@Dataflashsabot: No UIQ applications dont work on S60v3. As for ScummVM, yes I have played 'Beneath a Steel Sky' on it, it works pretty good.

One of my silly wish is that if there is some interpreter or something which let us to play AGS games on mobile :D since most of AGS games have 320*240 resolution and now lots of mobiles have it. Some guys are running Windows in Symbian using DosBox.

Maaan, playing IF games on a train has a certain appeal but I type at a glacial pace on phones...

Still. I AM INTRIGUED.

Eggie:
1. 0.8MB avatar = instant adblock, for me at least. ;P
2. You should get a phone with a QWERTY keypad, mefriend. :D
3.                                                   ^^^^^-- mm, typing 'QWERTY' is soo satisfying...

ALSO! I am considering making a webpage in Perl that plays IF games through standard forms. Or IRC! There are plenty of mobile IRC clients...

@Eggie: use inbuilt T9 dictionary, its much faster to type with it.
