Title: Clue: Master Detective
Post by: Professor Plum on Fri 02/10/2009 06:20:11
This is an adventure game I'm making based on the classic detective board game by Parker Brothers; Clue.

You play as Inspector Pry, an PI investigating the vicious murder of Mr. Boddy. Like the game, the classic suspects will be there, plus a few extra from the advanced version, Master Detective.

Of course, everyone remembers Miss Scarlet, Col. Mustard, Mrs. Peacock...etc. But also joining the list of suspects is Miss Peach, M. Brunette, Mme Rose and Sgt. Gray.

As Pry, you will walk around the mansion, interrogate suspects, examine weapons and clues...before solving the murder of Mr. Boddy.

Though the game is based on Clue...

Pictures are hand-drawn by me.

Cool I always enjoyed cluedo, that is until I lost my lead pipe.    :'(

Will the murderer always be the same (ie most adventure games.) or will it be different every time you play?

Cluedo as an adventure game?   :o

This is very interesting.  Can't wait to see the finished result.   ;D

I think it will be a single murderer. The reason being is that I honestly would have no idea how to script to the game in order to randomize the suspect, weapon and room. Plus, I'd have to make artwork for every single solution!

Sorry, maybe I am going a bit offtopic here. I never knew what is "cluedo"; however, some of the comments above reminded me a game I played quite a while ago. It was named "Jack the Ripper" and gameplay took place in London, where you had to find a murderer; you progressed by observing various locations, asking people and thus gathering clues - some statements that were put into special list, from where they could be used with each other in order to produce futher clue, until final accusation is created. Is this game is going to be in anyway similar to what I just described?

Well shoot ... somebody beat me to the punch!  I've been planning an AGS Clue! game for a long time (even have some sprites and a background or two).  Still, glad to see somebody else had the same idea.

Good luck with the game.

I love that sketchy art style! Looks like some of the books I read when I was eight years old. In a good way. Classy.

I played a game sort of like that too, except it was called 221b Baker Street and was based on Sherlock Holmes. It didn't have anything to do with Clue, though.

This looks good
Ive never plaued the game myself, but I remember ages ago I once saw the book, Clue which included adventure-esque logic puzzles such as 'find out who is lying based on contradictions' puzzles and things like that. I'd love to see some of them make an appearance.

You could always release an expansion pack afterwards which has the randomisation.

This could be done by having the indefidual storylines and events for
e.g. Miss Scarlet is the killer
       The weapon was the revolver
       The room was the Conservatory

and the puzzles that lead to the player coming to this conclusion are adjusted accordingly, but it depends on how the gameplay is run (inventory puzzles vs dialog puzzles etc.).

Hmmm. Too complicated for myself personally. I'd rather create sequels with the same artwork; different murder.

Anyhoo, I've got more room paintings done.

Another progress update. Col. Mustard and Inspector Pry have been created as sprites. Here's how they look.

For some reason I can totally see Winnie the Poo and Piglet toodeling through those backgrounds.  I mean that in a good way, very professional looking images that should look fantastic in game and also set it apart from other games.

Love the art style.

At first I couldn't think what it reminded me of, but it is Quentin Blake of course! Really cool! ;D

Thanks again. Yes, I'm sure Quintin Blake has inspired me one way or another.

Anyway, I redid the Cloak Room. It seemed it didn't seem to capture the elegance beforehand.

Old Cloak Room:

Wow, I love banister running up the stairs, and the grandfather clock.
I also love your screen with snakes winding round the tree.

Amazing.   ;D

You're style reminds me of Winnie The Pooh.   :)

I know I'm going to sound like a buzzkill but I find your backgrounds painful to look at. (Literally. I get a headache if I stare for too long.) I think it would look a lot better if you cleaned up your black lines, which are currently full of white pixels.

Besides, your map mansion is very clean, obviously not hand drawn. Is that going to appear in-game ? Mixing such wildly different styles could end up looking rather odd.

Just my opinion, feel free to ignore.
(Addendum : I love Cluedo. Though how they couldn't figure out where the crime scene  and what the murder weapon were by just looking at the body is still beyond me.)

Really? I thought the backgrounds had a very unique charm to them.

Yeah, the headache look is my classic style. Some like it, some don't. More importantly, I hope the story will turn out nice. Did I mention I have a friend composing the score? That way, I don't have to rip music from the net. :D

I've been working on a few things here and there. All the main 12 rooms are drawn and have been inserted into the game.

I've been working a little on testing the inventory.

And some suspect idle animations, watch in the game as Colonel Mustard obstinately fixes his monocle...

or Mrs. Peacock wipes her widdle nose!

Nothing totally different, but just a nice little update to show that I have been working on it! :)

Here, you can now see that I've got M. Brunette's animations in the works, as well as the newly created sprite for Miss Peach.

After a little bit of consideration, I've decided to include an upstairs.

Here are the extra non-suspected rooms:

Upstairs Hall
Master Bedroom (Boddy's Room)
Autumn Room (Mustard and Brunette's Room)
Spring Room (Plum and Green's Room)
Winter Room (Peacock and Rose's Room)
Summer Room (Scarlet and Peach's Room)
Servant Room (White and Gray's Room)
Bathroom

This looks really good.

But... aren't the characters a bit small for the backgrounds? In the latest screenshot, the doorhandle is at the same height as his head!
Title: Re: Clue: Master Detective
Post by: Professor Plum on Wed 28/10/2009 15:43:13
Yeah, it's on purpose.

For the sprites, I was aiming for a playful, cartoonish look. Something to evoke the childish spirit of the playing pawns from the actual game.

Right now, I'm working on the secret passage animations. I've also decided to include the Garden Walk passage that will connect the Courtyard with the Carriage House. When Pry reaches the bottom of the screen, there will be a short animation showing Pry automatically passing through the gate.

You can watch the testing animation here:

Looking good. I'm not to sure about the cursor though. 2 characters at the same time can become confusing.
Will the story be fixed or do you have random victims each time you start a new game to increase the replay value?
Keep up the good work!

Oh, this is going to be awesome.
I've always been a big fan of murder mysteries, especially the works of Agatha Christie.

Can't wait to play this.

Holy crap I'm psyched right now.

The graphics are gorgeous!!!

I had an idea - I think if you ask someone to help you with scripting to randomise the characters, weapons, etc I think its possible to do that. Here the guys r always happy to help you. I thought of the old simple graphics game we had years ago called Sleuth and it would randomise the characters and weapon every time and it lasted 10 mins each time to finish the game - it was a simple game and we had to enter names of our friends each time. It was fun. The graphics were just one colour and it was like a map in the house and the people were just circles with dots for eyes and the story would unravel through a simple text at the bottom. Anyone heard of that game? If they could do the randomising for that game then I think you could do that for yours ;). Would be good. If too hard, dont worry, your game will be fantastic! Good luck and I am keeping my eye on this one.
