Earl Mansin: Breakout

You're playing Earl Lee Mansin, convicted serial killer. You've been in prison for the last twenty-seven years, and not a day has passed without you trying to escape. The first task of the game, is breaking out of your cell.
Sure is, monopoly guy. But somehow things don't turn out the way Earl planned, and it's still up to you to get him out of there. You'll see when it's done. I'm planning to do this in three parts, this being part one. The next part(The Further Adventures of Earl Mansin), and the one after that (The Last Adventure of Earl Mansin) will take care of what happens afterwards,
after the escape.

Why, yes. Here you go, MG:

always look at you in that way.
Always.

Looks great. I love the graphics and the premise. But most of all, I love the monopoly guy.
EDIT: That's the worst thing ever to be displayed on a computer monitor.
WoW! AwEsOmE! I really dig that very large head! Very nice cartoonish artwork!
Looking fantastic so far H.B. And the main character looks hilarious (though a bit creepy) Ã, ;D Ã, The graphics are quite uniqe and truely showcase more of your wonderful artistic talent.
Ã, Ã, I like the whole idea of your game, and I look forwards to seeing the completed project.
PS: Feel welcome to contact me again if ya need any more help with fixing up any more "bugs" or with da programmin' stuff, and I'll see what I can do ya for. Ã, ;)
UPDATE: Since Ildu thought the graphics was the worst thing ever to be displayed on a computer monitor, I'm now converting everything into beautifully anti-aliased artwork. I'll be done soon, and I will update the screenshots.

No problem, I got plenty of bugs my simple mind can't fix. Expect me soon.
EDIT: Screenies updated.
Looks like me when I was in jail. Man, that sucked!!!
Nonetheless, looking good man!
Wow.. wow.. wow!
3 words..
original, away-blastin', damm!
and then some another words..
shoudn't serial killers have 3 names.. like Earl Edward Jones or something..
ahhh now i see.. Veneto Earl Lee.. okay! proceed Hillyboy!
Oh no =(
another amazing game far from finished that I can't wait to play :(
Great work, and great idea (is not cliche)...I love the backgrounds and the character face...please hurry =P
Hahaha, Hillbilly! The art style looks awesome! The cursors look fun, too :P If you don't, yet I'm sure you will, hear from any musicians - I'd love to write some choons for you. In the meantime I'll eagerly await a release or demo of your game :)
Just posting to say that I'm moving steady and that I've changed the font into something more suitable. I'm also overwhelmed with all these nice comments I'm getting here. Looks like this game oughta be really good when I release it then? :)
By the way, I doubt there will be a demo. The game itself isn't too big, so I don't really see the point. I'll see if I can post some more promotional crap later, though.
The game is looking great, hillbilly. I really love your no outlines style.
Can't wait to play the game! ;)
Big news everyone. The Adventures of Earl Mansin will be voiced. I've already gotten in touch with a voice actor who'll be acting Earl, and I'll post some voice samples later on.
YAY!!!! I'm your biggest fan. Great news regarding the voice acting. I don't think the game would be complete without voices :).
Good news HillBilly ;D
Gotta admit even after hours of staring on your cell pic (hey i need inspiration ;) ) still looks darn good :)
And here's what you can expect of sound vibrations from Earl:
http://www.americangirlscouts.org/agsuploads/files/Voice_Samples.zip
The game looks great :) Also the voice samples are really good. Do you need some more voice actors for other characters? I'd want to take part.
heya, i love the style. Good work!
I have just one question: Will monopoly guy be in the game?
I mean it looks great and all...
...but monopoly guy would make this game truly shine.

He could be his conscience, something that only Earl can see :P
The monopoly guy could be an icon to get hints. And also, the voice samples rock. Pretty much how I thought they should be, and very consistent in quality.

I hadn't considered that. But consider it considered.
Looking great there, Hillybilly. Some nice voice-samples too. If you need some more voice-actors, I could give it a try. :)

Thanks guys, but I already got what I need of voices. It's just three or four characters in the game. :)
whoa this graphic rules(not "the world")
this maincharacter is soo funny but from sheap and expensive holliwood movies, all busted freaks, morons, pherwherths that scr*w to animals and everithing ontheyr way they look just like it
(I'm terribly terribly sorry i equalized your "MAN" with those.please forgiveme :-[)-cant help but afterall all prisoners:are sleeped-a-to-litle and my-brain-aint-same-that-tweny-seven-jears-ago-so-wach-out!

good luck!
Pardon?
are my eyes supposed to be bleeding?
sorry darth :P
I'm afraid I had the same reaction. Sorry to reiterate but... what? o_O
Anyway *cough*
WHOA! This game looks GREAT! The graphics are superb, I adore the style... damn, I want to play this. I can already see from the way you post alone that this will be hilarious.
Thanks for the nice comments, even those I didn't understand.
In other news, I could use some beta-testers when I finish this. If this sounds interesting, and you're one serious beta-testing motherlover, please PM me or reply here.
Here's what I'm expecting from beta-testers:
*Check for programming errors/crashes
*Check for bugs(misplaced animations etc)
*Check for spelling/grammar errors. This is not obligatory, but appriciated.
*Check if text matches speech.
*Comment if there's something you don't understand, or something you find illogical. Don't be too picky on that subject though. :P
*Not ask me every fourth hour if the game is done yet. Not saying any of you will, but better safe than bothered. :)
*Report the overall enjoyment of the game.
All beta-testers will be credited, of course.
Of course you know me HB, "beat me up, Scotty!", errr, I mean count me in on the Beta-testing.
Good to know you're making such progress on the game (is it ready yet? Hurry up ya lazy bum! heheh ;) .
BTW: Really like the voice samples, they fit the character very well. Who did the voice, you? Good job on everything so far.

All righty then. I wouldn't say that I've made major progress lately, since I've been sucked back into the system. But it's getting there, slow and steady.
Quote from: Barbarian on Wed 11/01/2006 19:31:28BTW: Really like the voice samples, they fit the character very well. Who did the voice, you?
Heh, I wish. No, they're done by a really talented voice actor named Sonny.
I'd seen this thread when it first came on but I've only got the obvious "woah! looks good!" type of comments to share.
Are the speech files going to be WAV in the finished product? Ogg files are so much smaller in size. (I imagine you'd know this already)
Yeah, the speech files are in ogg. WAV and MP3 don't work well with AGS.
Just posted to say that the game is still very alive. And just not to waste forum space, I'll list some awesome new features:
1. You can die on several occations!
2. Fully animated video cutscenes!
Okay, fine, it's just two for now. But still, making progress! I guess the release date to be end of March, hopefully.
End of March!
Wow that's really quick. I like the graphic style, it'rs quite unnormal(which is a good thing ;)) and the main character looks really goofy to me!
Great news. Not very pumped up about the dying, though.
just to say YAY ;)
Quote from: ildu on Mon 13/02/2006 17:59:37

You won't die if you're not STUPID.
You're not STUPID, are you ildu?
I punish the stupid.
Yay, dying!!
Hey wait a minute..... This aint doom 4!
Is Leisure Suit Larry Doom 4? Or Secret of Monkey Island? Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis? Maniac Mansion? IS ANY OF THOSE GAMES DOOM 4 VICT0R?? >:(
Anyway, it won't be stupid deaths, like some games have. You won't, for example, pick up an apple and discover it's a bomb, that'll kill you right away. You will, however, get killed if you walk off a cliff. It's all simple logic. Plus, it makes the game a little more exciting.
If stupid is trying every item with every hotspot to get every possible dialog line, then call me Suzy and knock me dead.
No, HillBilly is right!
I like things to be simple and kinda relaistic. If you actually do try to walk of a cliff you are going to die. Why should the computer tell you "Don't do that! You'll die. Nay I won't allow you to do that!"
At least it will help avoid the unecessary clicking everywhere.
I say go for it.
And I also have to say that I love the way this game looks. Very well done and a lot of attnention to every detail.
Goody goody, another cool game for 2006 (?)
:o WOW something good... i can't wait to see it, the graphics has a amazing shape, Flash Maybe? anyway terrific i love it

Should've checked in earlier, huh?
Pretty funny is more like it! ;)

Dont get all worked up now. I wasnt being too serious :-\ And you cant die in secret of monkey island ;) Havent played any of those others tho.
My point is that dying in an adventure game is really unnesseary. Seen as in most adventure games, the main character has a mind of his own, and why would he walk off a cliff if he can decide to not put his hand in a fireplace?

Your role as an adventurer(atleast in this game), is to GUIDE the main character. If you're a bad guide, your character will die. I'm using this to prevent people from running the "use-everything-with-everything-and-everyone-no-matter-if-it-makes-sense-or-not" strategy too much. The cliff was just an example. If you've ever played Broken Sword 1 & 2, that's the direction I'm going for. It's not smart to just walk in to a room with alot of potential dangerous and armed people, for example. But I'm still giving you the option, even if it'll kill you.
Woah those graphics look wicked!!! I can't wait to play it!! ;D
I'm not sure when I'll release it after all. Stuff came up, and I've been losing and gaining interest back and forth.
It will be finished, though. Soon, hopefully.
what do you do with the antialiasing? ???
sorry if this was asked before and sorry my english is poor...
Still looking fantastic HB.Ã,Â

If you ask
how I anti-alias, I just export the images as smooth PNG's from Flash.
In addition, I'll be working as much as I can this easter. Everything except two rooms have been programmed, so then it's just the voices, music, cutscenes and fine-polishing left. Since both the voice acting and music is covered by someone else, I only have the cutscenes and programming to worry about. I won't predict a date of release, but again, I hope I get this project done sometime before summer.
Meanwhile, chew on this:

1.- image exported from flash as smooth
2.- imagen in AGS
3.- character in game
4.- character in game
now you understand me?
------------EDIT-----------
sorry, i just search and i solve my question... using 32-bits palette!
P.D: it would be a good game!
P.D2: my english sucks ;D
can you export walkcycles and stuff from Flash then?
As images, yes. Create the walkcycle, delete the other frames than the one you want to export, and then export it as an image.
One room left to be programmed and drawn. I've also received the first voice clips of another character. The voice acting is as close as it gets to commercial, and I'm very excited about it all.
I've added "cutscenes" as a progress in the first post, since this will be my greatest challenge in the time forward. It looks like this adventure will be half game/half movie.
If anyone is still paying attention, I'm sorry for being this slow. I'm busy both in the computer and real-life departments of my life. And hell, it's summer now too. I just have this thing of feeling guilty being inside when it's sunny outside.
Any questions or comments, feel free to post them. Call me an egocentric comment hungry internet bastard, but it's stuff like that which keeps me going.

Thank you all for your complimenting compliments. Your words made me strong enough to suffer through the AGS 2.6 programming style, and keep on rocking. I am now pleased to announce that I'm pretty much done with the scripting. Just a few minor tweaks here and there, and it's fully playable. Keep in mind this is just the gameplay, and there's still alot to be done before we're there.
In other news, I'm thinking of changing the name to either "Fugitive: The Adventures of Earl Mansin"(Followed by fugitive 2 and 3 in the sequels) or "Earl Mansin: The Escape"(Followed by other clever names behind the semi-colon in the sequels). I'd like some opinions on this. Also, if someone has any other suggestions, they are very welcome to share it.
Last, I'd like to mention I have not forgotten my BETA testers, and you will get your claws on the game soon. Sorry for being so late.

Anyways, good to know you're making good progress on your game and that it's near completion. Looking forwards to see it in action.

I'd vote for the "Earl Mansin :", it's a cool name and the game is all about him after all - fugitive would fit a person who's main characterstic is being a fugitive, and somewhat imply his innocense.

Hey,
Since it's been a month since I replied to the thread, I'd just like to mention that the game is still very much in progress.
- graphics 95%
- puzzles 100%

I'd show you something, but I'm saving it all for the release.

Yeah, I know. That's reason number one to change it. Second reason is if I ever get around to make a sequel, there won't be much "breaking out". :P
Ah! That second reason makes a lot of sense. :)
Are you impatient? Do you wish there was something you could do to get this god damned game released sooner? Do you want to bathe in fame and glory(and my love)? Are you MAN enough to program in 2.62? Well, here's your chance to prove yourself worthy, and amaze all your internet friends!
I'll be honest. The current GUI's in the game are crap. Full of bugs and dead pigeons, it's not even worth the 17" Samsung SyncMaster 710v monitor it was scribbled on. So, instead of dumping thread after thread in the Tech Forum, I thought I'd smack all the flies with one huge-ass motherloving rock. Would someone be interested in fixing up, or maybe even redo my GUI's? You'll be fully credited, and you'll speed up the release date up to one or maybe two months.
I've already created a .zip with the exported GUI's, source code and a .htm file explaining the issues. I want nothing fancy, just something that works.
So if you have some free time on your hands, a brain for 2.62, interest to help and maybe even an instant messaging program, drop me a PM. I'll be online later tonight, so if I get more than one application, I'll go by the "first come, first serve" rule. Except you're not getting served, you'll just be cleaning up my mistakes.
Thanks.
Problem fixed.
Well, I suppose I could try making a GUI for you. GUIs come fairly easy for me, just PM me your interface, and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the offer, and sorry for not getting back to you. I already got a PM when you posted, so I wanted first to see if he was good enough or not. Turns out he was, and the last few days have been PM'ing back and forth problems and fixes. It just got finished today.
So thanks to theeph the GUI is all fixed up and ready to go. Hopefully this was the last major obstacle before release.

I'm not sure what you mean with "PNG alpha trick". The backgrounds are imported at 24-bit with alpha channels, and all those are ingame screenshots.
He means the exporting of alphaed png images from Flash. And yes, he is using it.
I just exported the office background at both '24-bit' and '24-bit with alpha channels' and I couldn't tell the difference.
Looks like the tricker tricked himself into being tricked.
So I guess I should mention the reason this hasn't been released yet is because I've suddenly lost contact with the second voice actor and the programmer.
Everything is done except that.

Hi HillBilly, since I am among those who is eagerly waiting for your game to be completed, and given that you lost one of your voices, may I apply to substitute him? Do you need a male voice? If yes, than I may try to help you. Just let me know what I have to do. Here is my email: dave.c82@virgilio.it

Thanks for the offer, but since the voice actor already has recorded about 90% of that character, it'll be complicated. The finished recordings are implemented in both the game and in the movie cutscenes, so it would be hard to replace them.
However, if this keeps up for too much longer, I don't seem to have another choice.
That's gotta be the largest heard I've ever seen on a game character! LOL But it looks fantastic though.
I must admit, that Monopoly guy has me a little confused. And a bit scared LMAO.
Almost done? The progress you've made on this rocks!
Congrats on nearing the completion of your game, I have to say it looks great. What length would you say that the first part of the game is going to be? (short, medium, long) I will be watching out for the release.....
I'd say it somewhere around medium.
However, "almost done" does not mean "almost released". Believe me, I really can't wait to get this out, but at this moment my hands are tied. I appreciate the support, though. :)
I killed the last known bug today. The voice actor issue is also solved.
Not long left...
Yay!
Looking forward to the release!
Peder.
I've been waiting for this game a long time.
Can't wait to play it, Hillbilly. Definitely looks like a great game.
YES!! This is awesome! Almost as good as hearing that Legend Of The Lost Lagoon is released.
Great news. Can't wait to play it....
Wowzas! This looks very nice. I laugh at the character, hes funny looking. ;D
So close to completion. How many MB will it be? I hope its under 30 since my IP always disconnects me after 4 hours of being connected and I have a regular modem.

No, sorry. It's more like... 300 MB. 160MB zipped. I could make it a torrent though, so you can just continue downloading after a reconnect.
Let see...
20MB takes me about 2 hours
160/20 = 8 x 2 = 16 hours
Woah!
LOL
I don't think I could be patient enough. :)
I think I'll wait when I get high speed internet sometime this year. So I guess I'll wait. Once I get high speed, this will be the first game I'll download. ;D
@Fleshstalker
Try using Opera. When your download is aborted it will continue on request with most files.
@Hillbilly
Have you any games to compare this with in size? Is there just as much story in this one as in DOTT? (though I noticed early in the thread that it's a small game)
ps: I don't mean size in megabytesÃ, ::)
ps2: I realy love your graphics! It brings me back to the DOTT, Sam & Max and Full Throttle days :'(

Somewhere around "Who Killed Kenny Rogers" and "A Friend Indeed". Perhaps slightly shorter.

Wow, thanks. That's a major compliment, seeing how those were my childhood favorites too.
I'm not sure if I misunderstood, are you saying is shorter than "A Friend Indeed?" :o
Please say no xD :'( ;D

It's been a while since I played it, but I would say it's about the same length, yes. I don't think it's shorter.
BETA testers:
If I accepted you as a BETA tester, and you still haven't got a PM from me; Send me a PM now. :)
Er...

...right.
That said, it looks terrific, and everything people have said before. I just wanted to put these two quotations side by side and see what they looked like.

Well you know. With the cutscenes, voices, music and the game itself added up, it gets quite large. I hope this won't be a major problem for most of you.
Well, large downloads are never a problem for me. I have an ultra fast cable connection. So I say the larger the better!!! (whoa, that came out sounding quite gay)
Hi again. The game has gone through its first stage of testing, and is growing bigger and more stable as we type. For everyone who's interested in the development in detail, I suggest going here:

I'll update whenever there's a major/minor development or some screenshot/media I want to share. Sorry for the extra wait.
