Title: Gift of Aldora (RPG) - UPDATED 12/02/06
Post by: Kinoko on Wed 28/07/2004 03:02:50
Well, I was debating whether or not to do this when the game isn't close to being completed yet, but there is enough of it done to promise results so I figured, why not? It'd be nice to get some feedback.

-TITLE-
(http://kinoko.futariba.com/misc/screen1.gif)

-INFO-
The game is called "Gift of Aldora" and is an RPG based mainly on the Enix style of SNES RPGs (free roaming, not tile-based, and not turn-based combat) but also including basic ideas taken from all my favourite RPGs and, of course, many of my own.

-STORY-
You play Kin, a guy living in the peaceful town of Boronia when one day you are approached by a girl named Kaya. She is a messenger sent by the controllers of Fate to find you. She tells you that the Master of Fate has dissapeared and as a result, the world is fading. It won't be long before everything is lost and the world ceases to exist. You are told that it is up to you to find him again before all is lost. What has happened to the master of Fate? What does destiny have in store for you? You and a companion must travel the world and find out.

-MORE INFO-
The battle system is live (as said before, not turn-based) and similar to the Secret of Mana/Terranigma style games. There will be (hopefully) a nice mix of role playing and combat. It will be completely keyboard controlled, and although the story is linear, there will be a reasonable amount of "extra" things to do and ways to change the story. The story will already deviate in certain ways depending on which companion you choose.

-SAMPLE MUSIC-
I'm not a musical person in the least, but I wanted everything in the game to be my own, so I've made 90% of the tracks myself. (Modgeulator did the theme music for me, which is -gorgeous- because he's a genius!)

I chose to upload these because they've already been posted in the critics forum, so it's not like they're a secret.

-PROGRESS-
At this stage, it's probably about 25% completed, but it's hard to say.

-RELEASE DATE-
By end-2006 would be nice.

-DEMO-
Coming in the next few days!

I've been waiting for your thread about this, knowing it was only a matter of time. Looks AWESOME Kinoko, I can't wait. If it's even close toa s good as Cirque de Zale, it'll be an amazing RPG. I still can't believe its being made entirely with AGS...

Excellent!

I too have been anticipating this!

I've been 'writing' this story (in my head mostly but I HAVE some on paper!) for about 12 years now and one of the main characters is named Kin!  (one day I'll get it published)

Anyway, just thought I'd share!

This looks promising.  Yes ... promising indeed.

I love the look of this one, it's like those old RGPs for SNES. I bet this is going to be fun!

Thanks everyone ^_^ The comments help keep me motivated! *shows heavily motivated muscles*

I keep updating when there's significant progress and might put a couple more screenshots up every now and again.

One of my favourite games ever... Looking forward to this very, very much! :)

I'm looking forward to this one - Cirque De Zale was quality entertainment (though I'm guessing this won't be anything remotely like it), and I LOVE those SNES-era rpgs. Doing this must be pretty daunting considering how huge and complex SNES rpgs tended to be, but those screenshots (and the title) get the style pretty much spot on.

I imagine a game like this must be a scripting nightmare though. Good luck with it!

Er... I'm not bumping, really! I added a new screenshot of a room so it didn't look so ... samey. I'm going to be adding another one that shows a typical dungeon scene (once it's completed).

I love this style ... it's very Zelda-ish, ChronoTrigger, Secret of Mana-ish ... which is they style I had in mind when I did JP & Cosmo!

These screens look great!

The interior shot ... when I first looked at it, I thought the wood beams were like support struts and the purple and orange thing was a path behind them.Ã,  In other words ... it didn't look the the bricks were the wall.Ã,  Then when I saw the pictures/paintings hanging there (and the window) it came together.

I know this isn't the CL ... just wanted to share!

I think these look great!

May I be nosey and ask what the in-game interface looks like?

It looks so damn professional you could show this to people and claim it was on a Snes emulator, hell I'd believe you.

Post by: Kinoko on Fri 06/08/2004 05:05:00
Darth: Well, when the game's in RPG mode (ie, not a dungeon) it'll pretty much look like it does there. At least for now, I'm still not sure if I'll put a small GUI on screen to show current HP etc. During the dungeon scenes, there will be a GUI like that. You'll also be able to bring up a kind of control GUI to let you see stats, use items, magic, etc. I'll change or add a screenshot showing this and maybe the text windows.

Like I said, it'll be similar to the SNES style RPGs so arrow keys will walk you and certain other keys will be used to interact, run, fight, etc.

Rincewind: Terranigma is one of my two favourite games of all time ^_^ Equal with Breath of Fire II.

I don't like RPGs but if its made by Kinoko it must be nice :) What I did not like about older RPGs was the fact that the background story alway appeared to be nothing more than a reason for collecting items and fighting "random encounters". It would be lovely if the story would be important for your whole game! :)

Ah, blimey - You now have my total and utter respect! :D
I remember borrowing Terranigma from a friend of mine who had bought it when it first came out. He had finished it it like three hours, whereas I had to sit for months, struggling just to get past Bloody Mary... :) Ah, just a really, really good game. The story was perfect, and I loved the way all different events in the game was tied together at the end...
So in other words, if it's just somewhat resembling of Terranigma, I'll like it... ;)

Good luck with it!

LOOKS AWESOME! nice eye candy! ;) I love RPG's except turn based ones(well, I like Final Fantasy). The fighting style is like SNK's Crystalis for NES. Your characters look just like RPG characters, which is a very big plus. Good luck on this game, and if you do finish it, I will definatly download this!

Ah, me too!! I never had so much trouble with anything in that game as I did with bloody Bloody Mary. It took me AGES to finally be able to beat her, and I had to level up heaps and basically only did it by using one spell (lightening or something like that) over and over until she was dead. I can do it pretty well now but the first time I played that game... she was so god damn difficult. I'm so happy to hear I wasn't the only one.

That game... just blew my mind. Have you played Illusion of Gaia too? I assume you know that's the game that comes before it in the storyline. It's not as good but still great and the tie-ins between the two games are nice.

*ahem* Anyway, I could talk about how much I love that game for hours. I'm trying to put a lot of what I love about Terranigma into Gift of Aldora (without just ripping things... I mean more in terms of the "feel" of the game).

Totoro: Well, games like Terranigma most definitely were very story heavy, and had very big themes that made you think about them well after you'd finished the game. Mine will be similar in that respect - I HOPE the story will be at least slightly involving and will be tied heavily to the game... I can't promise anything, but that's what I shall endeavor to achieve. It depends on what you guys all think after you've played it, really :)

Hehe, I know what you mean... I especially hated those goddamn masks that kept flying around and drained your energy... Argh...Ã,  And yeah, the best way of kicking her ass was to just keep on building up experience until you reached level 50 or something... :)

But still, there was very little that compared to the moment when you finally defeated her... After that, every boss in the game felt kind of easy... Heh.
Ah, cripes, I think I'll have to either replay it on my emulator or try to find the original somewhere now...
Gotta play some Cream-a-Cat... :D

Yeah I know that - The same buddy who had TerranigmaÃ,  also had IoG, and although I didn't find it as good as Terranigma, (Much due to the fact that I never managed to get past Mu... Hah...) it was entertaining, none the less.Ã,
I also played Soulblazer on an emulator, but it didn't feel nearly as good, both story- and gameplay-wise as Terranigma.

Hehe, I get that as well... But it's a game that truly deserves some fanatic ramblings, I say... :) Once again, good luck with it all!

And, um... You wouldn't happen to need a beta-tester when that time comes? :D

Wow, Kinoko, this sounds like it'll be awesome :) The graphics remind me of Terranigma in a way.
I love how the story seems it'll be, with it being linear, but yet it'll have that flexability when it comes to choosing a companian and how the story is effected later on ;D

I also like the idea of the battles being live action and not turn-based :) PLUS!!

Hmm, it's a pity you never played past Mu. One of the best parts of the game is directly after Mu... in fact, the whole game improves significantly after that. You should get a rom and replay it! ^_^I also only played some of Soul Blazer on an emulator. It was interesting and had it's merits but once I got stuck, I just drifted away from it. I'll try to pick it up again some day, I really would like to finish it so I've completed the whole series.

I'm glad a lot of people are happy about the non-turn based combat. I really do like turn based RPGs but I think both sides have their merit, and I find this "real time" fighting to be more suitable to the style and story of GoA.

Re: Turbo... Probably not, because I wouldn't have thought about it. I probably wouldn't have had a dog, either :P

Mm, yeah, I have it as an rom now, but now I can't even get past the first boss... Bah... I never thought I'd get worse at playing that as I got older... Hah.
Although I did get to see some things after Mu, since when I got stuck sometimes, I used to play on some of the saved games my buddy had... Heh... *cheater*
Yeah, I'd like to play SB again as well, but since the RPG Oasis closed down, I don't know where to find the rom anymore... Bah.

Oh, and is thereÃ,  gonna be a weapon/armor/item system similar to Terranigma, btw?

Yes and no. Unless I change my mind midway or something, the weapon/armour won't be displayed visually in your GUI, only as text. In that regard, I guess it's more like Breath of Fire II or even Final Fantasy 4. I keep playing with the idea of changing that, but it would clash with my current GUI so I'd have to rethink the whole thing. I -am- still considering it though.

Okeydokey - I just thought I'd ask, just in case... :) It would be cool to see it in use again, since it is an a brilliant weapon system, but then again, it's good to do something new as well.

And just for the record - Made my way through the Mermaid Tower yesterday... Harhar. ^_^

*Whoops, double post!*

Just a note to say that the info has been updated. I decided it was stupid not to reveal ANY of the story seeing as you will discover all this at the beginning of the game. I -do- like being as ambiguous as possible, though ^_^

I also updated a screenshot and added another to show the general look of the text windows, another of the main characters, and the basic control GUI.

Somewhat of an update, as I've started serious work on the game again after a bit of a "xmas break". I wasn't quite happy with the old control GUI, so I'm completely redone it and I rather like the outcome. You can see it in one of the updated screenshots (in the first post) alongside the status GUI which remains on screen throughout most of the game.

Hp, MP and current level will be on screen all the time, and you can call up the control GUI (or whatever you want to call that sort of thing) to see other stats such as DEF, STR, WIS, LUCK and current EXP (and EXP necessary to reach the next level). You can also use/equip items/armour/weapons or magic.

The picture of the girl is whichever companion you choose.

There'll be some more updates soon, 'cause I'd at least like to post a screenshot of the first major battle.

Yeah, I agree. Usually when I hear someone's making a game "with ANIME in it!!11" I roll my eyes and curl up into a ball, but I promise it isn't like that ^_^ I just... happen to draw like that and I wanted to incorporate a little of my art into the game the same way your typical Japanese RPG does. I always adored the little character profile pictures in Breath of Fire 2 or FF4.

The game won't be "cutesy" as such, but I am trying to make it easy on the eyes. I always hated levels in otherwise pretty games that were set in an industrial zone or something. I want even my spooky, dark levels to have a certain ... aesthetic pleasure to them.

A good example of this is the forest level in Paper Mario 2. Typical dark forest, but holy hell, was it beautiful.

Title: Re: Gift of Aldora - RPG - UPDATED 9/02/05

I'm just creating my own "tiles" and... putting them together. It's great, because I can get the look of tiles backgrounds, and the ease of not drawing every individual thing seperately, yet I have the freedom to not bother with tile placements if I want to (for example, the dungeon I'm working on now just has trees willy-nilly, not spaced out evenly). I'm using good ol' Paint Shop Pro.

This looks absolutely amazing!Ã,  :o I've always wanted to make a RPG! Especially one's like FF, BoF and Terranigma. But it just seems to be too much coding involved. It must take a lot of concentration and time to do all the coding and all the detail on the characters and the backrounds.
But looking forward to it.

Wow sweet screenshots!  I'm amazed at this!  The only thing is the music, I'm into alot of it but there are some instruments that sound kind of ick.  Like in Home at the drum fill of 38 seconds, try something with a little more snap to it.  Just my thoughts... Awesome though, truly!

In the other topic you said you hadn't worked on the game in weeks? Why not? Not inspired?  I think the game looks very cool, sort of takes me back to the days of Phantasy Star or Chrono Trigger.  Ten hours of gameplay? That'd be utterly delicious! ^^

Thanks Shab :) (Can I call you Shab?)

Yeah, my music skills are pretty nil. I may even get my music genius friend to rework them for me at some point.

I haven't worked on the game since Easter. I took an Easter break because I had been working on the game, well, an obscene amount each day and it had taken over my life. After Easter, because I had kicked the habit, I took advantage of my time to look for a job and do some other lifey stuff. Then, I was living every single day for a couple of weeks just waiting for mail to find out if I was going to Japan. Now that that's over, theoretically, I could start work on the game again, but I'm still jobless... ah fuck it, you know? I WILL start work on the game again. I'll try to find work around that.

You know, I've never played Phantasy Star... I guess I should some day.

You can call me Shab...if it pleases you haha.  No worries about the music - and at some point I am going to start my adventure/rpg music archive up, just tons of excellent free music for people to steal and borrow from.  It will be groovy.  Alot of it is leftover melodies from my anime project which produced over 90 tracks and I'm only using about 50 or so.

Phantasy Star 2 is awesome, it's on the Sega Genesis!  Phantasy Star 3 is a bit different, and takes some adjusting to after playing 2.  Three is also on Sega Genesis.  Oh, you can get 1,2, and 3 on a GBA cart if you can find it.  Phantasy Star 4 is only on Genesis I believe, it's pretty good in the style of 2 but it's way too easy IMO.  I played the Online games but I'm such an old school gamer, it's hard to get into it.

Didn't go to Japan? That's a shame, I can't wait to visit Japan myself, I'd be going to do language studies though.  Yah no job here either.  I've got two weeks to get one though, because I need to get some things in order for a job I hope to get in November.

Awesome ^_^ I'm glad my music is annoyingly addictive!

*ahem* Just in case anyone cares (I do...), I added another screenshot because I notced most of the screens so far only showcased the first town and looked a little samey, so I wanted to show another town and give the overall look a bit of colour. It's only ONE extra screenshot, but I don't want to post too much because you're supposed to see all this stuff when you play the game. Still, I thought one more couldn't hurt because it's been awhile since I've updated, and I want you whoever cares to know it is still rolling along. I guess I'm also celebrating getting back into serious work on the game after an extended "Easter break".

If you can bring the same sense of nostalgia back from the old school RPG days as you did from the old school P&C adventure days with Cirque, I'll be one happy camper.  And based on your screenshots and the info you've given us thus far... I'd better start prepping my Happy TentTM and Happy Sleeping BagTM.

Hello, i ended up here in a bizarre and unlikely fashion via lots of internet searching but am glad i did-was wondering if it was feasible building an rpg with ags. The game looks really good btw
Anyway i've been looking for someone to collaborate with on a project of mine and was wondering if you'd be interested.

I have over the last 8 to 10 years been working on and off slightly obsessively on a fantasy/sci-fi story that has become rather complex but i think now its done pretty original (only gently blowing own trumpet!)

I was and may still turn it into a series of books and was going to write some music around it (been working in music for a while in bands etc currently doing some studio work so if you need any music...) but i then bought all the akira mangas and decided i would like to try and get it turned into graphic novels.(also dreaming of film possibilities-must..contact....gilliam..)

So,(intake of breath)...i saw your art was really impressed and hence thought i'd ask if your interested-i think a read of the story which is currently in a sort of written storyboard form-doing some character art ideas at the mo-may be a more convincing argument (wincing-dont want to boast but really want this thing up and running-i think it could go a long way!)

I realise its a lot of work but would be brilliant-massive opportunity!!!entire story is done all characters developed evrything its just the telling of it left ;D

right well, sorry for long post, really hope ur interested enough at least to have a look as there are so many rrrrrubbish anime artists out there and i was very surprised at the quality of your stuff :P

good luck with the game - same to everyone else here actually-feel like i just bundled into a minimalist party uninvited wearing bermuda shorts and a sombrero shouting about being great... :-\

ps-current favourite things: Cloud Atlas, Deus ex story, Morrowind

hey, great going!!! I loved cirque de zale. I'm mad about Japanese RPGs, i've played them all from chrono trigger, chrono cross, zelda, ffseries, secret of mana, seiken densetsu 3(great game, sequel to secret of mana .. i think), breath of fire, illusion of gaia, lufia1+2 ... list goes on.

The greatest of them all (a bit newer of course) suikoden 1 and 2. Best games ever made.

I'm glad you are pushing AGS in this direction. Can't wait to see a finished game.

This game looks promising indeed. I've always liked SNES action rpgs (SOM 1+2, Terranigma), or whatever the proper definition for them is.

Oh hey, didn't you say something about a demo in your 'Release Something' thread? How's that coming along? Still planning to release one? :)

Bernie/bigmac: Uh (wow, this thread came up again unexpectedly), yes I am. There will be a dejmo but not for a little while longer yet. I got a HUGE amount of work done in the past month but won't be working on the game for possible another month as I leave for Japan in 3 days and will probably be hideously busy and stressed/having fun.

cal: Thanks, you have great taste in RPGs! I haven't played Suikoden but the rest are faaabulous.

Tyni: Great to see someone else with an interest in the area! Good luck with your project but it's hard enough for me to find time to work on Gift and I'm a one-project-at-a-time gal. This'll keep me going for possible another year yet.

i definitely be waiting for you to complete this project. Looks very good.

I have some experience with making RPGs, but not with AGS or such engine.

It takes a while to get everything done and building the tiles (of course you don't need to really build tiles in ags) and building the story and characters.

All i say is goodluck and can't wait for it to be finished :)

Update, sure thing. I've been holding off since I haven't had net access at home since I moved, but TODAY that should be remedied. Still, I'm at work right now.

But heck, what's a few words.

Okay, I've been working on the game when I can over here. Obviously I don't have anywhere near as much time as I used to but I do always try my best.

Right now I'm working on two goals.

1. Work towards getting a demo out.
2. Get some basic functions working properly.

I've done some nice (I think) new backgrounds and got some difficult scripting out of the way. I've been working on some music as well but what I'm really hanging out for is for my music-ly talented friend (who has also come over to Japan and is just as busy as me) to get my opening theme music done. He did it once but before we could tweak it, his hard drive failed so he has to do it again fromt scratch. The first attempt was awesome though so I'm confident it'll sound great when I get it.

Although as Darth pointed out, it was against the rules... it's my fault for not updating so I'm glad you guys replied! I looooooooove hearing that people are interested in my game.

I'll try to update more often but it just gets hard to think of different ways to keep saying, `Yep... been working on the game lately`.

...and sorry for the double post, but since this is an update I do wanna push this thread to the top so people know.

I changed the title screen. Something tells me the previous one was aesthetically better, but I'm goig with the new one because it has more impact and is more traditional as far as RPGs go.

Also,  a new screenshot, just for the hell of it. This appears very early in the game so I don't mind posting it.

Title: Re: Gift of Aldora (RPG) - UPDATED 01/10/05
Post by: Kinoko on Sun 23/10/2005 03:41:28
Okay, I have a favour to ask of the musically talented out there.

I'm doing my game's music but the theme song was going to be composed by a good friend of mine because I can't manage orchestral things. Long story short, he can't do it and I need it by the end of the month. So, I'm forced to "let him go" (in a nice way) and hope that somebody here has an interest in composing a piece for me.

I've already made the melody and I know what I'm after so there isn't too much creative license here, I'm afraid. There's still a lot of room to put your own stamp on the music and make it how you think sounds best, but yeah... I just don't want any deviation from the tune I created because I have my little heart set on it.

The tune is here: http://kinoko.futariba.com/misc/gametheme.mp3

Basically, I need this to be somewhat epic, orchestral, and angelic. Think of classic angels, and please use trumpets/horns/that sort of thing.

I don't need this to be lengthened, (though a few seconds on the beginning or whatever won't kill me) and I want to keep roughly the same tempo. This music is times fairly well to match where it plays in the game so I can't have much deviation, if any.

Of course, you'll get ample credit in the game and my eternal gratitude. I can pay you a little if you'd like, but not much because I was originally getting this for free so I haven't budgetted for it. It's very important to realise I'm EXTREMELY fussy so even though it may well be the most beautiful piece of music ever, if it's not what I want, I won't use it. I want it to sound nice, but not TOO nice because it needs to fit in somewhat with the style of music I'm already using (see the first post in this thread for examples).

The deadline is the 30th at the latest, so Im afraid you'd have to work fast too.

If anyone's up for the challenge, please PM me ^_^ THANKYOU!

Gift of Aldora is a freeware role playing game created by Rebecca "Kinoko" Clements under the group name, Mushroom Republic. It is about a young man named Kin who travels the land in order to save the Master of Fate and stop the world from fading to nothing. This game is in the style of commercial Super Nintendo games such as Secret of Mana and Terranigma.

It probably won't stay for long, though, since it goes against Wikipedia guidelines on notability (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability) and vanity pages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vanity_guidelines). Although you could, with some positive thinking, see it as a borderline case, articles like this tend not to survive once nominated for deletion.

QuoteVanity information is considered to be any information that was placed in any Wikipedia article that might create an apparent conflict of interest, meaning any material that presents the appearance of being intended to in any way promote the personal notoriety of the author, or one of the close family members or associates of the author.

QuoteWhile an article about a little-known company, say, should not automatically be taken as a vanity article, it is preferable for the initial author not to be an owner or employee of or an investor in the company; likewise, an article about a little-known musician or band should preferably not be by the musician, a member, or a manager, roadie, groupie, etc.

So the important thing isn't really whether or not the author of the article is the creator if the game. It can be a vanity article even if you get someone to write it for you, and, more importantly, its notability (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability) is what will determine whether it's actually deleted. Conversely, if the creator of a notable game creates an article on his own game, it will not be deleted.

Wikipedia is not the proper place to promote your game. It is an encyclopedia.

Thus far the game looks nice. Have you got any idea when a demo will pop-up, Kinoko?

If you already did that, would you be able to redo it? Please? Witrh photos, videos and all? Pretty please?

Now, about the game!

One of the most promising (and most promising to be late actually) games of all times! Hope that it will be released somewhere around 2006 and be as good as the demo shows to be...

Whoa, I go away for a few hours and look where you guys take this thread... :P
And all of you should know that those pictures exist only in AGS "pay-per-play."

Heh, anyway, thanks for the nice words Kinoko, I'll see you around the forums.Ã,  ;) ;)

It's sad you don't have that much time for GOA, but rushing things never makes them better, I guess.

(What's AGS "pay per play"??)

It'd be nice if I were unemployed again. I seem to wish that more and more everyday. Unfortunately, work just zaps 99% of my time. I always used to wonder why people took so long to make games. Heck, I did Cirque in 3 months!

Now I understand the bitter truth. Work = precious little free time that you usually want to spend sleeping

I'm sorry to hear you have so little time for yourself, that must be hard in combination with GOA...

Myself, I attend highschool, so I don't know much about work... thingies...

I support you, so don't give up on this, okay? ;)

Just an update. I've been working for 3 days solidly to get a demo released within the next couple of days! Much, much progress has been made!

It's mostly just scripting the intro pieces together, changing bits here and there and trying to get it -working-. You think these things are a few steps away from completion until you start trying to iron out all of bugs, and you find you've been sitting on your living room floor for 3 days.

I can't say the demo will be a reliable indication of how the game will look and play at the end, because I already have some big changes I want to make to the engine when I have time, but for now, this will be what it looks like. You'll get to play the intro, and wander in the first town. No fighting, sorry ^_^ Still too buggy!

Having played and enjoyed Cirque de Zale I would have guessed your making a quality RPG but this is impressive.  If this is real (it seems like a dream) youve managed to script a high Quality RPG in a snes way (i believe many people had this idea in mind but didnt dare to do it for it is a heavy task).

So... Here I send you my encouragement to continue on making this wonderfull games that many people enjoy.

Thanks guys!

I am exhausted in both body and spirit from working on that demo until late every night =_=

At this stage, it's unlikely I'll make Release Something. Almost certainly the weekend though.

Kinoko ... if you're out there somewhere let me know if/when you'd like this unlocked.

Afflict - Do NOT do that again.
