Title: Highway Gauntlet *UPDATE: 26th of April*
Post by: PsychicHeart on Sun 09/04/2006 05:33:24
Hey guys,
this is a game i am working on when i don't feel like working on the big game that
Hornet City  (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=25423.0) (which is going fantastic, thanks) is.
It's called Highway Gauntlet, and is a drag-racing game,  this would probably be the best example  (http://www.streetracersonline.com/flash/drgrcr3.php).

Story[-ish sorta thing]:
The story is set in 2007. All your life you have been a shy, unnoticed teen.
Until, one day, in your hometown of [fictional]Corrose, USA. You enter a streetrace.
No one expects you to win. But you do.
This is followed by the most popular racer calling you a cheat, and proceeding to steal your car, and knock you unconscious.
The next time you wake, you are in Corrose Hospital.
Your only friend Max Quite tells you that the racer that stole your car,Locker, has fleed to
Wavena, a nearby city.
In a borrowed, stock and slow car, you drive to Wavena.
When you get there, you are instantly interrogated by police officers.
After Max Quite, who, unbeknownst to you, was hiding in the back seat jacks the officers car and drives off, allowing you time to escape.
Days later you are reunited with Max, who exaplains that he hid in a sewer.
Now, with both you and Max fugitives, a slow and stock car, and a burning desire to obtain vengeance for Locker's deeds, you set off to blast through the 20 racers who stand in the way of you challenging Locker, who has risen to the top of the leaderboard.

FEATURES:
* 8 different cars, including Lamborghinis, Subarus and more.
* 25 races to complete, plus 10 unpredictable, action-packed police pursuits.
* A sprawling Wavena City for you to explore and conquer.
* An interactive SMS system.
* Music by celebrities such as me, me, me, and more.

UPDATE: 26/4/06
I have been working a fair bit on highway gauntlet recently.
First of all, i've made the cars look a bit nicer, and slightly less pixelly.
Secondly, the cars are properly proportioned now, instead of one car being huge and another really tiny.
Well, that's about it.
NEW STATS:
Story: 100%
Graphics: 90%
Audio: 95%
Scripting: 5%
Total: 72.5%

That's all,
cheers.

Hmm how will this play? Do you just drive in a straight line and change the gears occasionally? Is it like drag racing, then? How can you see what's in front of you?

I applaud you for trying something different!
Title: Re: Highway Gauntlet
Post by: PsychicHeart on Sun 09/04/2006 12:10:39
yes, it is a straight line drag racing game, with you attempting to shift gears
within either a "BAD", "GOOD", "PERFECT" or "OVER-REVVED" zone on the screen.
And, there are other options, like the ability of nitrous oxide, which regardless of anything else, raises your current gear by 1.
And 2, you don't see what's in front of you.
And thanks for the applause.

I like the idea. Reminds me of the part in NFSU2 that I hated so much, dag racing that is. You bloody get all 5 or 6 shifts excellent and still the only way to win is if the other car crashes.

Anyway, I like the idea, as i have told you. I mihgt consider getting a bit sharper pics of the cars, but this sounds great. I second ManicMatt

That's an interesting use for nitrous oxide...
I've always thought it would temporarily increase HP.

Btw, are those screenshots? They don't look like it.

Your cars are so... so... sharp and elegant!

Just pulling your leg. Maybe you should attempt to re-rip the graphics. Sharpen them up, you know?

Search Google for profiles of cars. The you can get a good image, not a car viewed from some angle. Anyways, sounds great!
Title: Re: Highway Gauntlet
Post by: PsychicHeart on Tue 11/04/2006 04:32:42
okay, okay, i understand, the graphics are a little...deformed...but, as with any game production, slight changes, like for example, wheel repumpage, occurs with the graphics, like cleaning.
So, yeah, basically what i'm saying is
"Back off ungrateful slime, i'm workin on it!!"

Post by: Andail on Tue 11/04/2006 13:43:39
The game seems good enough, but I have two questions:
1. How did you manage to turn ordinary images of cars (which any kid in your age should be able to Google up in matter of seconds) that blurry?
2. Was your room on fire while you tried to cut and crop them?

So, basically, you've started another production thread with temporary graphics?  As I have said [to you] on countless ocassions; if these aren't the final graphics you're going to use, then you aren't far enough into production to warrant starting a GiP thread.

Did you, once again, jump the gun?
Title: Re: Highway Gauntlet

but i am. i mean, surely even you, Darth, slightly experiment and SLIGHTLY alter chars. and whatnot? i mean, they're finished, but occasionally, like most game developers, tweak graphics very slightly every now and then.

That's fine ... as long as it's only "tweaking" and not total revamping/changing as you've done before in the past.

Now ... everybody ... No more talking about the graphics.  This isn't the CL.

He doesn't know how to use Google.

Perhaps you should invest some time with your artwork rather than displaying this repugnant pile of dogs bollocks to us. Perhaps then you will get more respect Pukeblake.

Woah! Easy mate, he's only just in his teens! The curved lines feature in MSPaint can only be used by adults!

Seriously Flukeblake, you can do better than that. Won't you feel more proud of yourself if you nick some better car photos? Sorry I couldn't resist... Wouldn't you feel more proud of yourself if you put the best you can into your game?

thanks Gilbot.
at least someone here knows the fact that the GiP thread is a fair amount above the CL.
As for your questions on blurry graphics and whatnot,
who cares? They're graphics. I'm 13 years old.
You really expect me to produce graphics that look like they've been done from a  graphic designer with a pHd and 6 years of university?
Instead of tormenting and criticizing me why don't you focus on someone else. My dignity has been tarnished enough. You can't do much more damage to it.

Right. I'm glad I have a PhD, otherwise I wouldn't be able to use google's pic search.

Nobody expects you to "produce" the graphics, we expect you to enter "bmw m3" into a textbox and browse to the 3rd page.

I understand the motivation of pushing to get all AGS games as good as possible. Heck, I even respect that. I want AGS games to be the greatest of all those done in any adventure game system ever too, because I support AGS because we're using it to make our game.

But give the guy a break. So what that the graphics aren't terrific? In any freeware system you're going to get a spread of quality ranging from utter shite to mind-blowingly awesome. For all I know, this game's brilliant despite having low-quality photographs cropped a little funny.

I mean, good grief. We're all here because we lament the death of traditional point-and-click games. So we're obviously not the sort of people who can't look past whizzy 3D graphics to see a great game beneath. So why can't we also not see past the slightly ropey graphics in this game?

edit: Also, I like the way you consider your game to be 72.5% complete! How very precise of you  ;D

I agree with CaptainBinky but I feel there should be a minor correction:

Correction: Sure we love adventure games but more importantly we are all here to have fun creating them. If your idea of fun is tearing into Flukeblake than kindly leave the thread.

All that matters is that a member has fun making his game. Flukeblake is a member of these forums so he doesn't deserve any less.

Two more minor corrections:

-Never, never, never, NEVER use age as an excuse for ANYTHING.

-Don't diss your own graphics. Work until you're proud of them.

Well, i must, in all sincerity, thank some of you.
I think that the spirit of gameplay over graphics is pretty strong in this community, the reason i felt the courage to create a GiP thread for the game in the first place.
Even though i had a suspicion that perhaps i'd be mocked for them, i thought that perhaps prevailance would...well... prevail.
The point i am trying to make is that there is something within this community. At times it fills me with a warmth and a feeling that i wouldn't trade the fact that i am a member in these forums for the world. Then there are the times that do not.
I know i've gone a little deep for an issue concerning graphics, but, like Cap'n Binky said, we all remember when games looked like pieces of lasagna with a few green monkeys(no- wait, trees. Helemts? Ice Cream? Is it ice cream? Yeh, it's ice-cream).
So, to big brother, MrColossal, the others (feel free to kick my ass for that) and especially Captain Binky for that moving post, thank you.
To the rest of you, perhaps you could learn from the humility of the above mentioned members.
Cheers,
-Flukeblake.

Ok, a few suggestions then.

1stly, is it just car racing? Can you visit different locals and meet other racers? or is it purely racing.

2ndly, it would be nice to have a speedometer, a tacho and a visual display of gears that arent just words.

3rdly, you should have a visual display of the track in the gui, with both you, and your opponents. and any police cars that are after you.

4thly, what is that multicoloured bar at the top? it looks wierd and exactly the same in all shots it is in.

If you finish it, more power to you.

Yes, but even back then the wheels were round. Look, make the wheels properly round, heck ask in critic's lounge how to do that if you're not sure, and i will do the voiceover for your other game without even seeing the demo for it. Okay?

About your comments and suggestion, i have taken all of them into consideration.
1. No, it's pretty menu driven, much like  an arcade racer, except with an attempt at a plot.
2. Yep, will do. For most of them anyway, like knowing where you opponent/s are etc.
3. Will do!
4. It WAS going to be the area in which you switch gears(sort of), but with the addition of the tach, that'll be replaced.
Cheers,
Fluke.

I just got done beating the hell out of someone, so I figured I'd swing by and see how everybody's doing.

Flukemeister. Good for you that you're still working on this even though you've been referred to in a way that makes your name sound like a word for vomit.

Jeers, btw, to said poster. Jeers, however, also, to Fluke for using age as an excuse. I painted the Mona Lisa when I was eight, and by the time I was your age I was already well underway in the carving out of the Grand Canyon. Seriously, though, the whole reason I'm posting is to encourage you and to discourage certain others from posting against you...

When I made both of my games, I absolutely hated the graphics. I knew the games had good enough storylines to carry them through, but they would never be popular because the graphics looked like I'd been just a moment before voraciously devouring pig filth and then projectile vomited it all over my pen tablet. However, I wanted one game to get released ASAP and the other game was for the OROW comp, and therefore I had no more time to do anything with it. You, on the other hand, have all the time in the world.

When you make your graphics, are you all, "Holy mother of crap, that's awesome! I can't wait to finish this game so I can see this in action!" or do you just do it as fast as you can because you want to finish? My advice is simply this: take your time, make it to where YOU like it, and then when people say "0h m1 f3cking g4wd! Th15 i5 L1k3, 50 t3h suxx0rzz!!1!" you can actually stab them in the eyes until they bleed to death all over themselves knowing that you did your best rather than getting upset because people are being jerks to you. It has nothing to do with us wanting your game to be the best it can be, it has to do with you wanting your game to be the best it can be, and being happy with the finished project. When you are sure you've done the best job you can, people can't complain, and if they do, their opinion isn't worth the shit that rolls out of their mouths when they do.

I hope you get it done, and that you like what you get. That's why I like making games: for myself. Everyone else can inhale burning rubber vigorously. Do it for you and it'll be something you'll be proud of, regardless of what other people think.
