Title: Inferno: A Photojournalists Adventure
Post by: War Photographer on Sun 23/02/2003 20:24:02
I have an idea that I have been working on for a few months for an adventure game. Its called Inferno: A Photojounalists Adventure, as seen in the subject line. I have a story layed out and backgrounds and such but I have no idea how to script. I think this is a valid idea for a game due to the original content and limitless range I can explore with the story. If anyone is interested in looking into this idea and wants to add there skill to this project, e-mail me at realone13@hotmail.com.

I am currently looking for:

-Writers
-Character Artists
-Costume Design
-Colorists
-Researchers
-Editors
-Composers
-Programers

Thank you!

Funny, what are you doing yourself?

Also, Inferno! I wonder what Butcher will think.

Butcher is a fellow game designer who is working on a game called "Inferno: The Tale of a Rotten Bastard".

Oh name clash again...

There already is a game named Inferno that's being developed:

Maybe you can change the name of your project so as to avoid confusions.

I'll e-mail Butcher about it. My game is actually based on the Famous photojournalist named James Nachtwey who works for Time. I got the name from one of his books. By the way, tell me what you guys think I should do? Take a look at the link and then deside. Thanks for the input.

hmmm...I much rather you didn't use that name...

there's going to be a big mix-up...

However...if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO, I can't stop you really.

The NEW title of game will be ''Hanging in the Balance''. Its better than Inferno (I think) and it will cut the confusion of Butcher's game. Let me know what you guys think? I will release the title screen in about a week.

I don't want to give to much away so here is a little briefing. You are a Photojournalist named David Rodo working in Vietnam in 1968 attached to a platoon of australian soldiers. Things go wrong one night and you must uncover a huge plot that involves the US military, cia and lots of other twists. I am aiming at making the first serious adventure game with mature content not just for shock value. Also a game that projects human emotion and the horrors of war. All of the backgrounds and characters will be drawn by me. The game will be in a Circle of Blood type of style.

After months of putting it off, I thought you would have changed the title from Inferno ( :P ).  Well, I'm interested to see how this game turns out.  The premise sounds very interesting, hopefully the graphics and gameplay will do the rich souce material justice.  The title screen looks nice, very professional, but it would be nice to see a little bit more if you have any backgrounds or characters done.

All of the backgrounds are being done in oil paint. This was the only one that was dry enough to scan. The others I've done are to me, still not complete.

Oil paint? That's sounds really cool. I have a feeling that your game will be quite good... ;D Looking forward to some more screens.

A huge update I forgot to add! Opps! Oh well here it is. The game has been re-written and all of the backgrounds are also changed. Here is a little sample of the plot.
You are David Rodo famed photojournalist sent by Life magazine to do a story on the cocaine production in Columbia. As the game progresses, you (the player) can start to see a simalarity between this story (Inferno) and Dante's Inferno. Yes thats right. This is the reason I've kept this title and I don't want to change it because it would just simply screw the whole idea of the game. Anyways, the game will have all 9 levels of hell thus slowly but surley sticking to the idea and locations of Dante's version. The only difference will be that the story will be representational or borrowed from Dante's all the while using modern settings (Columbia) to represent hell. Example: Purgatory will be a tourist district. Happy and fun. Than after climbing up and over a mountian and crossing a river you end up in Limbo. A valley, peacefull yet sad. Its hard to explain but I'll go right out and say that this game will be like nothing the AGS community has ever seen. Dark, mysterious, graphic and scary as hell. I had lots of fun working on the story and I know it will link perfect with the art. Expect a demo relatively soon and final release at 2004 end. Thanx!

Anyway, i like the plot, it is promising.

Just to show you more of the changes to my game, I have been using Indy FOA characters as a base for my ingame ppl. It just makes it easier to animate and brings my game along faster. I may plan on updating them later when I have the time but for now there fine. Plus, I want the backgrounds to be the main concern for the demo. Well, here are the temp example characters. http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/boom.gif

Excellent characters, but you need to smooth out the double pixel areas. Looks a bit akward, low-res art mixed with not-so-low-res art...

I would but as I said before these are just my temp characters for the demo and most likely the game. But when I'm all done the final game I'm going to go back and hi-res all the characters. So for now, I know the look kinda stupid but they'll have to do. I'm more concerned with the backgrounds.

Looks good. But a word of advice: When and if you redo the characters, don't just "draw on top of" the old ones with more detail. I think it's a problem that they are all based on the Indy character. His stance - the side view in particular - shows a very specific attitude. And although all these guys are probably just as tough as Indy, they lack individual personality. This is the main issue with using Poser as well - generic template poses and walk styles makes it easy to forget the importance of body language.

Looks great so far! I know much of your game has changed, but I hope that you still use that title screen because it looks amazing. Also, is there any chance you'll give us a taste of some of your backgrounds? I would love to see them.
